StellarFish20
I was just searching the web, and found this. I know it's not GTA V, but it could give us an idea of the graphics and possible improvements for the next game. http://www.gamingunion.net/news/gta-iv-mod...lift--5676.html

Matty
I saw the video that showcases this mod earlier today and it looks absolutely fantastic. I don't think consoles would be able to achieve that sort of rendering with the graphics (as mentioned briefly above), and when playing the Grand Theft Auto games, there's often a lot going on at once which doesn't allow as much emphasis on the graphics (since when were graphics everything in a video game anyway?). Anyway, in terms of graphics; Red Dead Redemption improves in the graphics department over Grand Theft Auto IV; but as I said above, Grand Theft Auto IV has a lot more going on at once. I can see an improvement in the graphics in the next Grand Theft Auto verses Grand Theft Auto IV, but I cannot see the graphics being that good, especially for the consoles. OverTheBelow
I saw the video that showcases this mod earlier today and it looks absolutely fantastic. I don't think consoles would be able to achieve that sort of depth of field (as mentioned briefly above), and when playing the Grand Theft Auto games, there's often a lot going on at once which doesn't allow as much emphasis on the graphics (since when were graphics everything in a video game anyway?). I think you've got the term depth of field mixed up with the term for the overall rendered scene. Depth of Field itself is just a stylistic effect that blurs objects that are out of focal range - it certainly isn't very difficult to pull off in games these days. Example: the more you know, eh? Like people have said previously, I seriously doubt the graphics will excel much further than Red Dead Redemption on consoles. There is only so much you can do with a fixed set of hardware before it reaches it's graphical limits.
Rockstar20124
Nice find With that sweet lounge / trip hop / slow dance / house music from Jakatta that clip reminds me to that great movie Vanilla Sky Which was also in New York. Times Square / Square Junction in GTA was closed for the shoot of the movie. So it's all real. No CGI. I also have high doubts this generation consoles can perform such beautiful graphics. But you never know Maybe slightly less? RDR did look better then GTA IV. But indeed no buildings with reflections, heavy traffic with a wide variety of cars and bikes(also with reflections), pedestrians and such. So a lot easier to render. We will see. And the next gen Xbox 720 and PS4 will definitely be able to produce these kind of visuals I had a similar find of a machinima movie Hard Charger : Wide Open movie with some highly improved textures. But this looks even more AMAZING Here's the clip from the OP Here's Hard Charger : Wide Open machinima And finally here is a music clip from the brilliant movie Vanilla Sky including shots from Times Square where Tom Cruise is wondering what the hell is happening

The Wallet Inspector
Graphics could possibly look almost as good as this on this generation of consoles. Just don't expect a high resolution. I really doubt that. The XBox360 is using DirectX 9, and these are the specs of its GPU: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos_%28graphics_chip%29 It's old technology, and granted Id are doing amazing things with Rage but I don't think even John Carmack could make this happen in a GTA game with that hardware, even at a lower resolution. No doubt the next gen machines will be all 8-core craziness, SSDs and muliple high-powered GPUs. People definitely need to dial down their expectations of GTA V's improvements, and remember that GTA was pretty nice anyway. There are lots of improvements that can be made just with more skillful modelling and animations, without having to worry too much about these weather and reflection effects. I'm sure Rockstar's still going to have some nice surprises for us with refinements to the engine code, but we'd be wise to hope for higher framerates and draw distances than to dream of resource-eating effects. d0mm2k8
No doubt the next gen machines will be all 8-core craziness, SSDs and muliple high-powered GPUs. I believe there is doubt of this. Most console players I see say 'I couldn't care for the graphics if I like the gameplay/have fun', and hugely popular games such as CoD are compromising on graphics for frame rate. People also buy CoD every year with barely any graphical changes, since they just enjoy the game and are happy with the graphical approach due to not caring or wanting better. So why should Microsoft and Sony use top of the range cutting edge hardware, when they could save money since people will buy the console anyways just to play the games they like, largely improved graphics or not? Not to mention that the consoles would probably be huge and bulky, making it inconvenient for a lot of people. The next generation will have fairly current yet mid spec hardware, in a reasonably compact case and lots of 'innovative' gimmicks; mark my words. By the way, this is from the article; It may even put L.A. Noire to shame. What? L.A. Noire has not too good graphics even compared to regular GTA IV PC (although I'm sure L.A. Noire PC with have some nice visuals).

I would say your right on the money there, there is no point in using absolutely top of the line hardware, it would make consoles to expensive for most people anyway. Here is what i expect if Next Gen consoles will be out in lets say, 2years?? GPU equivalent to - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...814500206820MHz Shader Clock: 1640MHz Effective Memory Clock:4008MHz Core Clock - 820MHz Memory - 1gb. CPU - 3.4ghz 6 core? I wouldn't expect that much more, i think they went overboard with CPU in comparison to the vram, and video clock in the last consoles. Ram - 2gb, not much is needed. Harddrive - I have no idea how much SSD's are going to cost in 2 years, but i imagine the will be a lot cheaper, so i am going to swing towards an SSD 500gb? I really hope the next consoles are out before then, but just to give an idea i used two years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- @raindrops, i would say that is a bit of an understatement, GTA IV was incredibly poorly coded, R* did a very sh*t job with that. Noire PC with have some nice visuals). Good points, but I've got reason to think otherwise. On release, the 360 and PS3's capabilities were high-end. They weren't and aren't interested in keeping costs down, because consoles are loss leaders; software and peripherals are where the profit lies. Production costs drop during the life of a console generation as CPU/GPU die manufacture costs become lower, and other components fall in price but even so the PS3 remains more expensive to make than it costs to buy. The current gen has surprised everyone by holding on for as long as it has, and also being at full strength in popularity. The aim has to be to keep the next gen for another seven years, and according to John Carmack we're looking at more like 10 years with the next gen. Of course you can point to Minecraft, the Nintendo home and handheld consoles and other such things to make the claim that gamers don't really care about graphics, and a lot of gamers will make the same claims about themselves but they're liars. We all respond to graphical improvements, and there's no shame in that. We need all these effects to camouflage the game mechanics, which rarely add anything new (CoD players are effectively playing the same game as Counterstrike from the HL1 era, and you can even argue it's not a world away from Quake II). We need them to feel like the world we're plunged into is believable, and we like pretty shiny things. People buy CoD every year because the servers of the previous titles become empty when the new versions are released, and they want the map packs. That's not really a cause for celebration. Also, as far as I can tell from the voice chat when I sit down with my CoD-obsessed nephew every week, it's only squeaky children playing it anyway. They're too young to have gotten bored with this yet, but they will. This is their Counterstrike, but they'll demand something much better-looking very soon once Battlefield 3 arrives. It shouldn't be a polarising argument with gameplay on one side versus graphics on the other. It's seen as somehow shameful to enjoy graphics, as if they're empty whistles and bells, but graphics can and do feed gameplay. Before HL2 came out, Valve showed tech demos of their physics system and it was breathtaking at the time. Now, physics puzzles are taken for granted as part of the design of SP shooters. Graphic improvements gave us realtime generation of shadows so that if a player is foolish enough to walk in front of a light source, their opponents can see their shadow from around the corner and react strategically. Since the GTX280, Nvidia has been proving the muscle of their cards with true(ish) water effects created via the behaviour of thousands of invisible spheres, and if we were to see these implemented in games they could create transformative gameplay. Just like to point out, the PS3 is much cheaper the make than to buy now, before Sony removed the emotion engine and Blu-ray was still a new technology, yes they were losing ridiculous amounts of money, but they are far beyond that now. I think that John Carmack fellow is correct, even though technology advancements have not really slowed down (as far as i can tell) games development probably won't make such a massive leap with the next generation consoles, it will probably be a lot more gradual, and better software and programming experience that can optimize games further will be around to prolong the life of next generation consoles. You are right about graphics, i don't mind playing games that don't have the best graphics, but better graphics seem to immerse you more.
