Filip
Dear Rockstar support, Im struggling with a big problem with your game Grand Theft Auto IV. I know it's hard to help large amount of people, but I'm begging you so much. I can't play normally. The problem is, that when I left my safehouse (in-game), I notice frame skips (don't know how to name that thing). I mean, fps is good (around 30 fps on high everything), but when I drive a car - the game goes like this - normal fast normal fast, I see missing texture which is loading for a long time and again normal speed of gameplay, fast speed, normal, fast, and etc. Before patching the game, there was 44 fps avg, very stable on patch 1.0.4. After patching the game to 1.0.7 (Europe)/1.0.6 (Russia), my hair started to fall of from my head, because my favourite game isn't working stable, blah, I can say it is nearly unplayable with this lags. Specification of my PC is mentioned below, in this link: http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/3095/beznazwy1t.png Here is a video from Youtube, which can be a picture of what I'm saying: (including popping of textures, objects) Greetings, Filip - GTA master Thank you very much for help - I tried nearly everything to make this game run properly. Obviously if here is Rockstar Toronto for ex. :E
YankeesPwnMets
First, download and install this update from AMD http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pag...on_win7-64.aspx If the issue isn't fixed, try this commandline: -memrestrict 1048576000 then if that doesn't work, replace that commandline with this: -memrestrict 1073741824
OverTheBelow
Turn down shadow quality to "high" rather than "very high".

Filip
I tested command first and it is slightly better - stuttering is gone, but popping not fixed - I'm trying second thing. It must help me now Obviously - the main problem isn't fixed - but first command is better than last. I will wait for official R* reply and I will post it if someone has similar problems. YankeesPwnMets
Rockstar Toronto only posts here when there is a new patch and they provide support on the forum for a few users in the patch thread before just disappearing
Filip
Rockstar Toronto only posts here when there is a new patch and they provide support on the forum for a few users in the patch thread before just disappearing NOOOOOOOOOEEEEESSSSS! I JUST WANT TO PLAY THIS stupid game -.- I love this game, but it drives me crazy. Look at how good was gameplay before patch 1.7. Game had very good details, etc. -.- MY VIDEOS OF WONDERFUL GAME: There was 44 fps in benchmark, but they were ROCK SOLID. Now i have 53 fps, but in most of the time i get only 25 fps! WTF? Sry, I'm just so nervous because I'm tired with working on this game for 5 months.
OverTheBelow
Nobody is stopping you from playing on 1.0.4.0, man. Very High shadows on patch 7 are extremely resource intensive and will choke all 1GB graphics cards (1.2gb+ of vram is recommended for no stutter). That is why I suggested you keep it at high. Patch 4 Very High shadows are much less resource intensive.
YankeesPwnMets
The benchmark is inaccurate. If you hit 60 FPS in the benchmark your most likely never going to hit 60 in-game because of all the traffic and other factors that affect performance
Filip
I set high shadows - not very high. BTW high = very high in 1.4. So, what's the problem? The game is running like a sh*t.

High does not equal the old very high at all. They are different systems all together. The closest you can really compare is Medium to the old very high. But even then, they are still different systems and the new system is more taxing on your computer.
YankeesPwnMets
If high shadows lag the game, try medium shadows. Common sense.... A 5750 isn't all that great of a graphics card in the first place
Filip
OK, maybe that's not the greatest card, but that's still good card - look at last ATI Radeon low end graphics - they can't even run GTA IV properly. BTW, high must be equal to very high, because in the first days on 1.7 - game was running like this and there was same fps Maybe more tips anyone? No? I don't know. Even no shadows lag this game -.- This is terrible and there was no lag on 1.7 some time after 1.4.
YankeesPwnMets
If 1.7 doesn't perform as you wish, why don't you just go back to 1.4? You were happy with 1.4, so why did you bother updating the game? If it ain't broke don't fix it
Filip
But I want to play multiplayer - I'm not that stupid. I paid for this game some of my money, so why can't I play it? Really, today, game industry is just so f*cked up.
OverTheBelow
But I want to play multiplayer - I'm not that stupid. I paid for this game some of my money, so why can't I play it? Really, today, game industry is just so f*cked up. Problem exists between keyboard and chair. If the game is running like sh*t, you have to turn the graphics down and close background apps. Doesn't really get more simple than that. If you aren't ready to accept potential errors and setbacks with games then why on earth are you bothering playing on PC? You don't always get better graphics and easy modding capabilities without putting a little effort into it. I've never been incapable of playing & customising a game to play at my desired framerate & res (1080p60) with this rig and it isn't exactly the highest end of computers. Get a little patience or play on a console. I doubt you even payed much for the game anyway in 2011 (even 5 months ago it would still have been very cheap). I bought even Collectors edition. I'm GTA fan. BTW, I want to experience this game to the max - high quality textures, etc. Im just talking like that because I know that many ppl have these problems with GTA IV. BTW I repeat - it mustn't be greatest PC to run GTA IV in better quality than on consoles. Now I'm waiting for R* support for one month, but I think I will just reformat my hard drive for one game. Get a little patience, why? Because another patch will be coming or something? I don't think so - next patch will power off every mods, etc. Notice that even on console, patch 5 gave physics downgrade, etc. -.- That's why I don't like GTA IV so much like other R* games. I still want to play multiplayer. -.- Anyway, I must change my platform to xbox - I'm glad that I have this - EFLC is running perfect on 6 years old machine. Notice that your machine is a lot better than mine. I don't know, maybe that's just a hard drive. If you haven't had any problems with GTA IV, you're really lucky man. I just think that patch 1.7 like pretty good machines less, than machines with 8600GTS or worse. Edited July 7, 2011 by Filip454

From what I got out of that, you are saying you have a 3 generation old videocard, that wasn't even top of the line back then, and you are trying to get more than 25fps out of it with shadows on high? Yeah, that's just not going to happen bud... Turn down your graphics or upgrade your computer. Either that, or quit complaining, and play on the consoles. Rockstar can't help you other than tell you this exact same thing.

This card is from 2009, and GTA IV was running so stable even on patch 1.7. Game was running at stable more than 30 fps still on patch 1.7 - I told that after some drivers upgrade it was downgrading. I also noticed that some smoke effects are just flickering, so I'm wondering if it's driver update issue. Yeah, but how is this possible that a lot worse card can run this game simply in 30 fps and my card can't do this and it's running at 20 fps. I think that's texture issue.
