The GTAF Google+ Thread

What's google plus? Watch the video below for the best description.

For those who don't want to load a video, you can visit the official Google+ webpage or read some information below.

Google+ is a social networking service operated by Google Inc.. The service launched on June 28, 2011, in an invite-only testing phase.

Google+ will be built as a layer that not only integrates different Google social services, such as Google Profiles and Google Buzz, but also introduces many new features including Circles, Hangouts, Sparks and Huddles. Google+ will also be available as a Desktop application and as an application on Android and iOS. It has been said that this is Google's biggest attempt to rival the social network Facebook, which had over half a billion users in 2010.

As of now it is still open to "Invitation Only." And with that, people such as myself, are finding they aren't even accepting those invitations since people keep finding loopholes to get their friends in. Google+ is likely well above their desired amount for initial testing but even with that results seem positive all around for such a massive service that was just announced earlier this week.

How can you get in? I'm hoping this thread actually aids in helping us get eachother in. Due to it being invite only, and being a good chance your friends won't know about it, we can help eachother out. Once you're in and you set up your Circles (groups of contacts/friends/family/etc) you are then given some invitations. I INSIST that you do NOT post your email in the thread. It will only help invite spammers. Instead, I suggest those of you who get spare invites, post that you have some available. Members can then PM you and ask for you to invite them.

Keep in mind, you'll be giving your email to some random person on the internet. Do so at your own risk.

------------------------------

To sum it up, it's a new social networking service built into Google's services, with new social features. With the rise of Android in the mobile realm, and Chrome coming to netbooks, people are going to be likely relying heavily on their Gmail accounts. I know since I got my first Android phone almost 3 years ago I've learned over time how valuable Gmail and other Google services can be. I think Google+ is going to bring about the next era of the way we connect to eachother and share. The reception around the web has been quite impressive and I feel that you all need to hop on board, or at least know about it.

I've decided to post this in Gen Chat as it gets more traffic than Tech Chat, so more of you can get information about this.

This sounds stupid. Call me an early skeptic, but then again I resist all social networking-type stuff....at least at first.

"You tell me exactly what you want, and I'll explain to you very carefully why it cannot be."

That response was made well before any information on the service could be understood, MM. I suggest you take some more interest in it. There are services like Instant Upload that you may like, as an avid photographer, and with the ability to set up your Circles (groups) you'll be able to target your friends that are most interested in these things and therefore more likely to give you feedback. That's just an example of it.

Face it, Facebook, while not nearly as bad as Myspace was before everyone ditched it, is turning to crap. As soon as they started integrating games and "apps" it took a huge dive down with people adding random people and completely destroying what the point of the site was. Instead of being social with people you are actually social with, it turned it into a place where parents can stalk you, random people or friends/family post stupid sh*t to your wall (spam/ads/game invites, etc), and so on.

Not to mention privacy issues left and right, lack of control over what is brought to you when you sign in... Google+ gives you all of those abilities in from what appears to be a better interface.

I spend quite a lot of time on FB, so if this is any better, it won't hurt to try it out. After all, it's Google. I'd like an invitation if anyone has some left. smile.gif

I interested in seeing how it goes. BTW shouldn't this thread be in the tech section?

Read the first post again. ^

I don't like FB, only used it for a few months until I got bored of it. Hopefully Google does it better.

If someone has an invitation, I would like to have it.

I think it's definitely a big risk on Google's half, going up against a site as well established as Facebook is tough. But FB did it to Myspace and won... who knows, Google can take over, or at least fill in a spot that FB can't. Glad to see some interest in the thread!

@nightwalker, I explained it at the bottom of my post.

And really, it's not a "tech-junkie only" interest.

I could never bring myself to join these social networking sites. All I've got is a YouTube.

Sounds like FB with the simplicity of google.

If I ever get the chance, I'll try, knowing google they'll probably kick ass!

As long as I don't get incessant animal farm invites I will definitely like this better.

It wouldn't hurt to try it out, Facebook on 2012 will become old and SOMETHING has to take it over. If anyone has a spare invite, I would much appreciate it! smile.gif

I want it to be good. But I wanted wave to be good too...

They'd be ahead if they could work out a way to upload the account information you can download from facebook. Save people a lot of time and energy. Once they have their stuff in place Google just needs to wow them with other features.

Personally I would like to see a website that was literally more engaging. Like have a little android-eque guy greet me when I join up and run me through the features. I don't necessarily want him staying around and being all paperclip about things but a "hello, welcome to google+!" would be nice. Maybe have this character come back to explain new features, or if you actually WANT a paperclip he could stick around and tell you your googledoc is ajar or something.

Also the stream should be moved back a step in importance. The power of their service should be in their social apps (hangout and huddle make me hopeful), and getting people to do stuff. If people enjoy the experience of the service, they'll keep using it. Facebook is boring as hell, so if this is more fun I'd jump ship.

So far, though... it looks like facebook with a google logo.

You read my thoughts exactly. I still got 86 game requests left unanswered in my Facebook account.

Facebook is becoming more of an annoyance. Most of my friends have ditched Facebook for Twitter, which is still useless.

I have never felt any social interaction with anyone on Facebook, just countless spams. Hopefully Google+ will fix that.

Couldn't they find a better name?

Not sure what they're even trying to do then... that's like saying "I think my Volkswagen is getting kind of old and crappy now, should get that boat to replace it."

I've got an account on Google+ and it looks pretty neat. Very similar to Facebook in its user interface, but the whole thing where you have circles is pretty cool. I refrain from posting too many status updates on Facebook, because I don't want EVERYBODY I "know" to read what I have to say, or my family, or whatever.

I know Google tends to be pretty good for this sort of stuff (apart from that AOL leak years ago), but I'm a little apprehensive about having a social networking account that also functions as my account for my search engine. I've got an iGoogle account, I think that's what it's called, and although I've disabled the feature that keeps a log of all your searches even that makes me a bit uncomfortable.

It's not like I've got anything to hide really (so don't try that "If you've done nothing wrong you've got nothing to worry about" bull), but I just don't like it.

@nlitement:

Can you have the same people in multiple circles? Or is it one-to-one like the demo seemed to suggest?

It's happening with fb, too. Bing and Facebook integrating to show whether your friends 'like' a certain thing you search or whatever the f*ck.

sh*t looks good, but I'm not too active on facebook to begin with. This looks even less friendly to folks new to the system. If I get in it I'll see what's what.

True. Facebook's quickly turning into that guy who you know from work/school/football etc. who you like, and he's good to hang out with, but he's started turning up everywhere instead of that one activity, when you don't really want to hang out with him. The weirdest and sleaziest example of this is that there are links to share videos via twitter, facebook and whatever else on porn sites. Seriously, who does that?

Certainly looks interesting does G+, if it can keep all the unwanted FB crap out of it then it should work alright. FB is a pain in the ass for me, most of my 'friends' feed is utter crap just sh*te status updates that I don't really care about.

I've requested an invite, lets hope they sort that issue out soon.

I have high hopes for Google+, actually. Looks to have a great interface with a ton of neat little things you can do, such as Hangouts. I haven't tried it yet, but hopefully Google will roll out invites soon.

Personally, I'm a bit tired of Facebook. Mainly, because of the 'like' system. Allowing your users (95% of which seem to be uneducated and lack severe mental capacity) to create pages about nonsensical crap is one of the worst things you can do. That, and it's annoying as hell. I go on Facebook to talk to people and keep myself updated with the happenings with my peers, not to browse what stupid little quirks someone made on a page that you 'liked'. Having pages for bands, TV shows, movies, etc. is totally fine, but the rest of it is daft. Hopefully Google+ doesn't implement anything similar, because that's one reason I would dump Facebook.

I'd love an invite. If anyone has one going by all means, fire me a PM. I'd love to see Google's third stab at social networking, by the sound of things they might have finally hit the nail on the head.

The only way I can really see myself switching from Facebook (Which i'm pretty active on) to a new social networking site is if all of my mates start to do it, which at the moment doesn't seem like it will happen. Maybe some will try it out because it's just something new that isn't Facebook, but we'll see.

An invite just to stoop around and see what's what would be cool though.

So far looks like the only one who's in is nlitement... any invites available?

@kippers, I know what you mean. It'll flop if people don't migrate to it quick enough. Facebook succeeded initially in that it was set up for college students which helped gain initial interest. Then upon opening it up to more schools, more people heard of it. Then they were flooded when they opened it up to everyone. With Google+, this initial beta/testing period is gaining a lot of interest from people, but there's still a huge amount of people that haven't even heard of it. It'll be interesting to see if this goes through.
