Converting HDD from FAT32 to NTFS

Mister Pink

Trying to convert my HDD to NTFS but I get this message in the CMD.

This drive is dirty and cannot be converted. You will need to clear the dirty bit on this drive by running CHKDSK /F or allowing AUTOCHK to run on it the next time you reboot.

Any body give me some help with that. I have a lot of stuff on my HDD and I've nowhere to back it up and people converting from FAT32 to NTFS have been seemingly OK doing so without losing their data. Now, I know it's always a risk and I can back up the essential files.

Is OK to run CHKDSK or AUTOCHK? Will it harm my data?

chkdsk /f is just a read of your disk fixing any corruptions it finds while doing so. It shouldn't erase anything. I say shouldn't, only because with computers you just can't be sure. But in my experience it never has.

The reason it asks to do it on a restart is that the disk has to be locked. If it isn't locked, it does it on bootup before it has a chance to be used. Feel free to get a second opinion but I'd say its perfectly safe.

It's safe.

In fact running chkdsk /f from time to time is a good thing to do to find and fix errors you didn't know you had.
