LCstuntman
Hey, I've had two patch 7 installs for a while, but I wanted to have one patch 4 (for serious modding) and the other patch 7 (to keep mod-less and play online) So I reinstalled my game, upgraded to patch 4, copied the whole directory file to a "RS Games" folder in Program Files, right under the original "Rockstar Games" folder. then I patched the main folder to patch 7. So: C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV is my patch 7, 1.0.7.0, un-modded install, and C:\Program Files (x86)\RS Games\Grand Theft Auto IV is my patch 4, 1.0.4.0, to-be-modded install. However, the patch 7's social club interferes with the patch 4's social club, so everytime I use the patch 4's LaunchGTAIV.exe, it just opens up the new patch 7 social club, thence launching the patch 7 game when I want to launch the patch 4 game. Ok, no big deal I thought, and downloaded XLiveLess, the ASI Loader that gets rid of the social club. However, when I put the xlive.dll in my patch 4 install, and launch the game using LaunchGTAIV.exe, it just launches a blank, black screen and freezes. How do I fix this? I also have both patch 4 + patch 7 directorys in a backup file so I can replace them when needed, so I don't have to reinstall. I've tried tons of combinations to try and make this work, such as reinstalling the patch 4 social club application after the patch 7 update uninstalls it, but it doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance (wow, I wonder how many times I said "patch" in this post)
chrisblake
alright mate. i have both patch 4 and 7 installed on same pc but different hard drives! mine didnt launch at first till i put xliveless in both patch folders! plus i see you renamed your patch 4 folder to rsgames, dose the game not look for rockstar games folder when its started? but thats your patch 7 folder so that might be a problem! but im just guessing here! try renaming patch 4 folder to rockstar games again and see if it runs? if so thats the problem! but im not a mod, just throwing out ideas here! hope you get it sorted mate. mkey82
This is very strange, are you sure you're using the latest xliveless? It's possible patch 4 has some problem with your system and that's why it refuses to launch. Also, you will probably have problems with settings files being overwritten among various game versions. Yeah, and I also tried the first version that supported patch 4, in case the new one didn't support it, but same thing. It's weird, when I officially patch up to 1.0.4.0 (from a brand new install) on the main one, both of the installs work, with and without xliveless, but when I upgrade the main one to patch 7, the patch 4 fails without me changing any of the files in it. So yeah, I guess it has to be those setting files or something they share If I had two different hard drives with an install on each, would the settings still overlap or would I be good? mkey82
The problem is probably in the registry, I guess the launcher looks there for the install path and start the game exe there. The key should be HKLM\SOFTWARE\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\ and there should be an install dir entry there. Try editing it the the modded path and then try again. radioman
Have you tried installing the games on different HD's-like the Patch 7 version on the C drive and then install the Patch 4 version on a separate HD? This should clear up the problems of both games trying to use the same launcher.... This method works for III and VC, so it should work for IV-I have confirmed this to be true, as when I had my old desktop, I had III and VC installed on my External HD, then when I got this desktop, I installed the games on my C drive, now I am able to launch the game from either directory(the C drive install OR the External HD install)...The only thing is, they still use the same User Files Folder, since that is in Documents by default... D T
I'm having the exact same problem as you, LCstuntman. I was about to post a thread on it, but you beat me to the punch. The problem is probably in the registry, I guess the launcher looks there for the install path and start the game exe there. The key should be HKLM\SOFTWARE\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\ and there should be an install dir entry there. Try editing it the the modded path and then try again. Ah, I'll try this. LCstuntman
The key should be HKLM\SOFTWARE\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\ and there should be an install dir entry there. Try editing it the the modded path and then try again. Where is this located at? I can't find it anywhere. I looked in Regedit too, and couldonly see "Hkey" stuff, and none of them contained Rockstar Games. Im running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. mkey82
Sorry, now I see you're on 64 bit OS. The path should be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV chrisblake, you're supposed to use regedit. Google it if you're unsure about what to do, look for "windows editing registry entries".
LCstuntman
Nah I shoulda listed it, my bad. Ok It gives me the option to change the "Install Folder", but if I change it to the RS Games folder won't it mess up my normal unmodded patch 7 install? EDIT: I have an idea, what if I add "RS Games" to the "Wow6432Node" folder, copy the "Grand Theft Auto IV" folder from the "Rockstar Games" to the "RS Games" folder, and THEN change the InstallFolder of the RS Games one to the Directory I want? Would that work or f*ck up my registry? Wow that sounded confusing, hope you understand my horrible explaining skills Edited July 5, 2011 by LCstuntman
chrisblake
hi. thx for the reply! i worked out it was regedit i needed to use! i see the install key and all that there but i cant see my patch 4 folder there? in my R* games folder i have grand theft auto iv, Rockstar Games Social Club. now i also have GTA IV PATCH 4 folder in R* games folder but this dose not show up in the folder in regedit? so how can i make regedit see it to edit the path? hope i made that clear? lol thx for the help so far! mkey82
OK, 1. DO NOT add anything. 2. if you double click the key entry named "Install Folder" you should be able to edit the path to your liking. Make a backup of the path you're about to edit (copy/paste to some text file) and then change it to the patched folder you're trying to use. 3. if then the game works, the one patched with update 7 probably will not, so we'll have to work around that somehow. Don't worry, there is always a way.
LCstuntman
hi. thx for the reply! i worked out it was regedit i needed to use! i see the install key and all that there but i cant see my patch 4 folder there? in my R* games folder i have grand theft auto iv, Rockstar Games Social Club. now i also have GTA IV PATCH 4 folder in R* games folder but this dose not show up in the folder in regedit? so how can i make regedit see it to edit the path? hope i made that clear? lol thx for the help so far! This is because the patch 4 isn't offically installed, just copied to the location. and mkey, ok good haha, was about to add it but figured I'd wait and ask here. I'll try to tinker with it after I put my patch 4 install back in tomorrow (I've since put back my modded patch 7). Thanks for your help
mkey82
Basically, what can be done here is to have the registry entry fixed automatically every time before you start the game. If this works, that is.
LCstuntman
Ok so when I change the install folder to RS Games the exact same thing happens as when I had xliveless installed on patch 4. The Patch 7 runs perfectly but the patch 4 freezes on a black screen (and crashes eventually, unlike xliveless). EDIT: I'm ok with dishing out 60 bucks to get a second HD if you think that would work. I need the space anyways for HD videos Edited July 6, 2011 by LCstuntman
mkey82
I'll have to think about what's going on there. I don't think a second hdd would do anything for you in this regard.
mkey82
OK, only two things come to mind a) remove the paul.dll file from the game dir (patch 4) and uninstall any RGSC you may have installed later on b) if you have a second partition, you could use that and place the patch 4 install folder there. If you don't possibly a virtual drive could be used for this purpose. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/5291/how-to...e-in-windows-7/ you would have to choose a larger disk size, at least 20GB to be on the safe side. I just don't see why would a different drive letter allow the game to run, the only link between the system and the install is the registry key. But a few people above did suggest it so it should be tried. Edited July 7, 2011 by mkey82
LCstuntman
That didn't work, but I found out something weird. I reinstalled the game and updated to 1.0.4.0, and it played fine. Then I copied my 1.0.7.0 from my backups (I didn't install the patch) to the Virtual Drive, and it worked fine. However when I tried to play 1.0.4.0 again, it froze to the black screen as if it had xliveless, although it didnt. So something in patch 7 must be breaking the patch 4 install, not xliveless. However, whats really weird is that even if I delete the patch 7 from the VHD, the patch 4 still doesnt work I don't get it But I guess I'm fine with two Patch 7 installs
chrisblake
was there no way around found for this? EDIT: just though i would have another go at this, so went to my patch 4 folder and in rgsc folder i ran setup! then i ran the game from gtaiv exe not the launchgta iv and it went in! got title screen up and loaded into game! yay i thought... but too soon! i quit the game and went to run patch 7 and that when i noticed i didnt have my gtaiv dvd in the drive??? funny how patch 4 loaded without it and NO im not using and cracks!!! anyway i played gta patch 7, all was fine but it had set all my graphics to low! no problem there! anyway i quit the game and go back to patch 4 and guess what? not working again??? but this time its different! before when i used to try to load patch 4 it would get to the title screen and just stay black! but now it just crashes on startup!? i tried uninstalling rgsc and doing just what i did last time but patch 4 just wont run again? patch 7 runs fine! my question is: why did it run that first time but not now? and is very strange it did with no dvd? anyway thats some kinda proof that both patches can be run! just hope someone can find a fix! will keep trying myself! chrisblake
FOUND A FIX!!! kinda but it works! i made a new user on my pc, went into that user and ran gta iv patch 4 from there knowing patch 7 has never been launched from here! and boom it worked! logged out back to my main user and run patch 7 again, all sweet there! logged off and back on to the new user to test patch 4 again and she works! so we can run 2 patches as long as they are in different users! no ive not tried but common sence says if i was to launch patch 7 in the new user it would once again break the patch 4 startup! so delete the patch 7 short cut off ur desktop so to not run it in that user by mistake! hope this works for everyone else! right im off to go try some new enb settings one love! GTA IV is installed into %systemdrive%\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV folder. Running a patch will install files into the same folder to enable the update of the game files ie: IMG file and executable file updates etc. If you patch that folder with one patch it means that patch is your game version no matter which user profile you login to. Yes, but to run two patches, you have to copy the Patch 4 install to a different location, so the location is not the same as the defualt install. Then the default install is updated to Patch 7. chrisblake
ok sorry maybe i should have made myself clear! i installed gta iv and patch to 1040! copied the gtaiv folder and renamed it to gtaiv patch 4. i moved this folder out of rockstar games folder while i updated to patch 1070 as i know it removes rgsc and didnt want it to touch my patch 4 folder! so now i have both patch 4 and 7! but if i run patch 7, it brakes patch 4 some how? just wont load patch 4 at all! also at this point i have dropped xliveless in to the folder as after patch 1070 xlive.dll is removed even though gta iv patch 7 is not ment to need it, ive found it just wont launch without it? so i have xliveless in both patch 4 and 7 folders! now patch 1070 can be run from this user but if you try to run patch 1040 it just wont start! but if you make a new WINDOWS USER (maybe i forgot to state windows user, not game user?) and run patch 4 there it makes new game saves and user settings so we get no conflict as its a different user! but like i said, my guess is that running patch 1070 in the new windows user profile it will do something to break patch 1040 from launching! so just remove any short cut from your desktop for patch 1070 so you dont click it and break patch 1040! hope thats made every thing clear! peace just wanna add that it dont seem to matter where your gta iv folder is! you can drop it on your desktop and the .exe in the folder will still launch the game! i know it works! cos i have gta iv patch 1070 modded on drive c: and a unmodded 1070 back up on another harddrive and both can be run! so i can play 2 1070 patches in the same user that both use the same game save without conflict! its just patch 1040 that i need to change user! ps. i log the first user off! i dont switch users! dont know if keeping my first user logged in would cause a problem but im not gonna use more then 1 user a time so im not even gonna test it and risk loosing the ability to play patch 4 again and having to make another user again! grandtheftauto1233
Everyone calm down, the solution, im not guaranteeing anything, worth an attempt though. My problem was that the Patch 4 game would crash, i got RESC10 right on start, i later found out that the settings files for the graphics/controls on the NEW patch caused the old one to crash, everytime you play the newer patch, you gotta rename or delte the settings to get the old one to work, to do this, rename the settings folder in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV to something else, and launch the patch 4 install. Good Luck
chrisblake
calm down? whos upset? lol anyway my way works! try it and see! dont ask me why it works it just dose! i been playing patch 1040 and 1070 all day! the topic title asks how to run both patches on one system, i believe i just answered it! not trying to upset anyone here, just trying to help! peace
Kweckzilber
I made a batch file for LCstuntman's original installations (as mentioned in the first topic). Link!. Unzip all files into one folder and run the appropriate batch file. The names are self explanatory. The .reg files are needed for the batch program. You will always have to click "Yes" to the question (titled Registry Editor). I could avoid that by writing a C program, but then, Antiviruses may detect it as a trojan. I was also going to suggest logging in as different users, but the registry entry is in HKLM, which is more like 'All Users'.
