Probably their wives not getting any action in the bedroom, or Brendan is being framed, any evidence? If so, Cole Phelps will bust yo' ass. Very ironic that a team of devs who created a detective game, are now being detected... heh.

ROFL LMAO! its a lie.

Well i think 12 hours a day is normal since most people I've met who had/have jobs work in similar number of work hours and some even say its a "lite" routine.

And why do you need $8K per month if you work 12-16 hours a day, if you don't have proper weekend and have no any vacation? For taxis (so you won't be late after 18-hour shift?), burgers and pizza with coffee?

Yeah, cause they have, like, no vacations at all between a finished game and the next game they'll start designing and developing.

Hey, if you don't want to be a part of amazing games, then go work somewhere else.  Otherwise, quit complaining!  It's the year 2011 for crying out loud, we're past that time in history where you could only ever work for one company.  And besides, if enough people get fed up with the "treatment" they're receiving and they all quit, then their company would be forced to "tone down" the work environment so they could keep their employees happy.  That's the beauty of working for a private company.  They have to have employees to make money...so...no employees = no game = no money.  They'll "change their ways" if enough people are bothered by the conditions.

The issue was with the sketchy lines in their contracts that made it to where if they left the team before the game's three month release anniversary they'd get nothing for overtime in which dozens worked 100+ hour work weeks and got frustrated from the abuse and quit.

Imagine if you were a deli worker and your boss pressured you into working overtime and then you get so stressed out the only way you wont do something stupid would be to quit. then boom find out you dont get your overtime bonuses. I'd be f*cking livid.

Well, I've been working as a telemarketer for over a month now and I've been getting crap worth sales lately (in the beginning I made 6-10 sales a day, now it's 1-3 sigh.gif ), but quitting now means I won't get any of the bonus to my pay I've won, so yeah they do have all sorts of hooks like this in work contracts. Which is why ya gotta unionize.

Complaining for 12Hr work days? lol. Especially for something they should enjoy doing.

No kidding, sir. I can imagine that being a game dev. would be difficult and stressful to the brain, but for godsake you're are making a video game, being published by one of the biggest game publishers in the f*cking world. Come on... I am pretty sure these guys get a nice salary, and not a hourly wage. Boo hoo.

lol 12 hours? I know people who have to work 16 hours a day, and they're not sitting making video games. Hell, workers in poor countries regularly work 18-20 hours and sleep at their workplace.

Also, LOL at that pic Indi. posted.

Seriously...they're whining about making big bucks developing video games? 12 hour work days? Boo f*cking hoo. It's the field they went in to. They should consider themselves lucky and privileged to be working for the company(s) they are and pulling in huge salaries. You expect to be sitting in front of computers for long hours when you go into this and no doubt there are going to be deadlines for things just like many many other jobs.

They could always join a more lax company, but then they wouldn't be making as much either. With popular companies, you have a lot of expectations on you for your nice paycheck.

You guys have no idea what you are talking about and show huge disrespect to the stress and crazyness that these devs go through daily to make video games.

f*ck you kindly.

sounds to me like a middle managment problem going by one of the comments, where the supervisor wouldnt stand up to the main bloke and tell him that the deadlines are impposible and cant be stuck to, hence the main geezer was getting hacked off because it appears that his team arent actually doing anything, also hes got the struggle of making sure he delivers this very developer intensive title, as it has cost so much to develop.

I agree with the issue being highlighted though, and its good to see that the people who did have a problem either walked out or quit.

@DOOM!: they ended up getting dropped by Sony which is when R* picked them up. They were blowing through so much money (supposedly the CEO what ever his name is wasted millions of dollars in one day).

I haven't played the game, or even seen gameplay, but from what I hear and see from the new "technology" they built for the characters is seemed to be almost unreal. If this game lives up to what its worth, then that "wasted" money could turn into favor. Weather it is from LA Noire or they use this technology for another game. I honestly don't think these guys have any clue of what real "worker abuse" is, sadly.

Quite true actually, I mean R* has like 9 or 10 studios. The whole company should release more than one game a year.

This is very typical of the game industry, it is hard work and long hours and it always has been. I recall one of my tutors saying he spent 4 days solid at work and sleeping under the desk, when it was coming up to major release day.

It's fast faced industry which eats Developers for breakfast.

I finally got my Xbox back from the repair and have now been able to enjoy the game properly. It's a good game but already I think it tends to get a bit repetative with questioning witnesses. The game is a little too slow to be honest and the dispatch calls feels like something they added just so there would be some action.

I think the IGN score of 8.5 is what the game deserves. It's a good game but not in class with GTA IV or Red Dead Redemption.

Developers don't set the price of games the publishers/shops do. Also it costs a sh*t load of money to develop a gameand many don't even turn a profit nowadays.

As has been stated a lot of you don't have a clue.

It's pretty typical of every single design field. During one of my internships, I often did 14+ hour days, weekends, whatever. The difference is I was paid hourly, and these guys are probably salaried, which usually doesn't work out for those employees. Working under a deadline is stressful as f*ck - it's no wonder there are so many burnouts after a few years in the gaming industry.

"I have never heard of bosses in the game industry giving everyone fuel money, so why is he complaining, and if your late, your late."

@Finn, if workers use public transport and they work out of normal hours, companies have to cough up for getting them home. Also on the guy getting grief for being late after working until 3am, that is actually against employment law, as employees are legally entitled to a set number of hours sleep each night. In this case, TB could'nt rightly say anything to him.

It's a shame that these young game devs don't get their heads around job law a bit better, then they would'nt get shafted so often. I'm not defending TB, but if a firm can get away with something, they will. Ive known people working without contracts and suchlike, it's fkn suicide.

The people on here going with the whole "it's games what do you expect" ethos, have the same mindset as those that got burned at TB. That excuse is used and abused. And for the record, devs do not get near 90k salaries. The majority of artists/programmers get paid pretty averagely unless they are veterans.

There are a ton of game studios that are badly managed, just some worse than others. Which is why 'the industry' needs to be quiet about tax breaks and learn to run a business properly. Perhaps another thread.....

the situation that took place inside Team Bondi during the development of L.A. Noire, is the same situation, if not worse, in some Rockstar's studios, such as San Diego and Vancouver. It's no wonder to see them delaying their projects so many times, as mismanagement serves a big factor in delaying the progress of the development. A good example would be Max Payne 3 . It was intended to release at Winter 2009, but now after one year and we are almost going to the second year, and yet there's no sign of the game in the retailers. However, I will keep my respect toward Rockstar, because they are still one of the rare developers that make the gaming industry an interesting place to be a part of.

Then, there's almost no chance of Rockstar acquiring Team Bondi, and change the name to Rockstar Sydney, as some expected.

Yeah, reading around it seems that most of the R* studios have a similar vibe to this, with North being a little bit better run.

There is a further article on gamesindustry.biz with some more tales....indeed the plan was to turn TB into Rockstar Sydney, but they eventually rethought it due to this Brendan character.

Although I can't help wondering if R* weren't just happy to get their hands on the facial animation tech and get the hell out. I doubt they would be phased by any tantrums from the Bondi manager.

There was no Lead Animator from January 2008 until the end of the game, and for large parts of production we only had one animator working on gameplay animations (any others were doing cinematic animations). This meant that there was no way to add life to the world. It's a perfect example of why staff retention is important, was ignored by the leads at Team Bondi, and the game suffered for it."

the truth is that the same results can definitely be achieved more efficiently, without causing so much pain and frustration

In an interview to IGN, the devs said Depth Analysis do not wish to be exclusive, and it wants to provide middleware to whoever wants them.

^ ah it's third party? Gotcha. I thought maybe Bondi had it it exclusively.

It's certainly a PR disaster for Bondi, or at least the manager in question.

Crafty gits! : "We were constantly told that the project was only six months away from being done to justify the long hours - it was always "the final push". There are so many emails like this talking about a 'final push'; I don't have all of them, but it was a constant theme. Management knew this was untrue, but maintained the lie anyway to keep people working. I only recall one time where a lead confirmed that they knew we weren't going to hit a release date but that they were maintaining the lie to keep the hours up...."

Reading some of the working hours in these articles, they actually arent out of the ordinary. TB had an increase to 9am-7pm during the week; standard for film production is 8am-6.30/7pm. Weekends however is something else, especially without bonus. At the end of the day, it depends what you do with those hours, if a project is badly managed then you could be like a hamster on a wheel, working all hours but achieving little.

Not quite, if they all leave - they are held responisble for breaking their contract. It's easy [and from a legal standpoint, gives you a lot more leverage] if you; 1st complain about the conditions, 2nd get fired for complaing, 3rd start a lawsuit for bad conditions AND wrongful termination.

It's the American way. Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.gif

Hm? Team Bondi's Australian.

Average Australian wage in case nobody had it.

Average full-time earnings in Australia were $64,641 per annum in 2010. (According to the Bureau of Statistics.)

If overtime and bonuses are included, earnings were $67,116 per annum.

The average male wage (ordinary time earnings) in Australia is $69,233 per annum. With overtime, this rises to $69,997.

The average female wage (ordinary time earnings) in Australia is $56,950 per annum. With overtime, this rises to $57,704.

Workers in the Capital Territory (Canberra) are Australia's highest paid workers with average ordinary earnings of $75,514 per annum, followed by Western Australia on $70,101. Here is a full list of average wages by state:

Don't live in canberra, it's too expensive.

They need to quit bitching about working long days in front of a screen and sh*t. Even if they had to work weekends, boo hoo. I've worked many over time shifts, and many many weekends. Intense sweaty labor, too. And that was for what? $10 an hour, $15 over time. Did they get headaches from watching the monitors too long? Pansies.

Wow. Just wow. Bitching about a 12 hour work day? At least they have a f*cking job! My job has required numerous 12 hour work days, weekends and 12-14 hour work days...plus an 8 hour work day and then being moved to another location because I was needed to work another 5 hours. As of recently, I went back to school for a period of time while working full time and after I completed my courses, I got another duty piled on top of what I already do. Woe is me. But you know what? I'm grateful I have a great job where I am needed! They can't just replace me so frequently it's required that I bust my ass. I remember working 26 days in a row which included a 14 hour day plus a couple 12 hour days and nothing under 8 hours.

Seriously. Cry more.  rolleyes.gif

I was just about to say this.

Not to mention this is 14 hours a day of GAME DEVELOPMENT, they aren't exactly doing any heavy lifting, or intense physical labor.

Game development, now that's real strenuous activity. sarcasm.gif

Physical labour or mental labour, both are hard, both strain you in different yet similar ways. Do some heavy lifting and you go home worn out. Spend the day exhausting your head trying to work out a bug for hours will wear you out too. Physical or mental stress gets you the same result. Do you think these game devs get home full of energy because they hardly had to do anything all day?
