On a scale of 1 to 5, how far do you plan ahead when making missions?

    • 1: I never plan anything and make things up as I go along

    • 2: Before I start making a mission I have at least some vague idea of where I am heading with this mission, but no details

    • 3: Besides the storyline, I have a few good ideas about where this mission will take place and who will be in this mission.

    • 4: I know most of my missions content in advance, but I make the script up as I go along.

    • 5: I have totally scripted the whole mission including locations and what every actor says at what point.

I am really interested to learn how far you guys plan ahead when making missions. I have personally voted for option number 2.

Even though from time to time I know exactly where I would like the mission to take place and with whom, I usually spawn a heli or jetpack and fly around till I think of something or see something that would fit into the story. But I do most of the time have a general idea of what the mission should encompass in the broadest sense.

Often it takes me a while to finish a mission because of this. As I often think and rethink a lot about the possibilities presented during the mission making process.

I wonder how you guys do it and if it works for you.

Well, since I failed a lot of times in my missions, I decided to have totally scripted the whole mission including locations and what every actor says at what point. I know that this takes bunch of time, but that doesn't matter. Since it's summer, I have a lot of time to spare.

I always plan long mission packs with an incredible story and stop working after the first few missions because it gets boring confused.gif

Im actually between 4 and 2.

I usually plan all the story missions ahead and what will happen and where it is happening,

Reason why I am also 2 is because sometimes the area pictured is different and I have to change locations or something. Or if I add sub stories, it usually is left last. I usually fill my agenda regardless how long it will take or how hard it is. Only time I normally "change plans" is when the mission crashes and f*cks up on me.

I also script and plan 5-20 missions ahead of where I am at as well. I keep it all in notes of course or at least a mental map of the main story missions

2 but sometimes 4 (Even though I'm new and not a good DYOM designer)

Like you, before making I also roam places to find one that fits my story or scene (cutscenes) and sometimes end up being bored (Due of lack of interest and lack of story to think) and play other games...

Mostly 4, but sometimes I'm in a rush and want to make a quick mission, then I go for 1 or 2. I try to think ahead before I design my missions, and if I have a better idea when I'm actually designing, I use the better idea.

I vote for 4.

I have a notebook for DYOM which includes details about every mission I make, but I often change my mind when I really make the mission.

For example, I was just making Nines and AKs in my Things to Do in Las Venturas series several minutes ago. In the notebook I planned to let the player go to a factory with Shindo Wu, kill everyone he sees inside, take the AK47 and go outside, but finally, I made the player to go to the airport wth Shindo, find some dead body, recieve a call from Knight, help Knight and Tatroe[/i to kill everyone in the factory, take the AK47 and go out.
