Missions Necessary?

Okay, so I've never really played GTA III before. One day my friend brought it over to my house, and I decided to give it a try (my friend pretty much never plays it, so they are pretty much of no help).

Of course, when I started the game I was given the first mission. Now, as I've said before in different places, I'm generally not one to do missions, especially when I first start a [GTA] game. So naturally, I started exploring a bit and driving around like a maniac.

Unfortunately, at one point, I died. When I died, it said 'Mission Failed' and I was respawned back in the place I started off in. The same thing kept happening.

I've never had this problem in San Andreas; whenever I die, I start off in the hospital. In fact, when I'm not doing the mission it never even mentions it until I'm near the bicycle I need to use for it.

It's not really a big deal, but it kind of bothers me.

Does this always happen?

This only happens in the first mission. After you deliver some broad to her pimp you can use safehouses etc.

Right now you are stuck in the intro mission.

Yes, as fireguy109 said, You must finish the first mission in order to actually die and re-spawn at a Hospital or anything of that sort, because the first mission is important to the game's story...Very important.

It is possible to die and go to the hospital without completing anything.

It's easy to "break out" of the intro missions...and you can save the game or do optional missions in your prison clothes. All that is required is to fail the mission once (easiest by destroying the Karuma). When the game respawns you on top of the bridge, you can actually move around a little bit before the mission is cued (basically, the game drops you onto the trigger spot which begins the intro mission). When the trigger is hit, the clock will roll forward or backward to 4am on the current day and restart 8-ball's cutscene, then return control to you.

This works really well:

After the cutscene, get in the Karuma and circle around the burning wreckage...and drive up the Unique Stunt ramp on the center divider. Drive up to where the divider splits and get out. Push the car off the divider. Right when you see the mission failure message due to rolling the car, step into the center divider's gap...falling down to the street below the bridge. The fadeout will be happening just as you are picking yourself up off the ground...and that small movement is enough to keep your player from hitting the trigger spot when the game respawns the character at the top of the bridge for a retry. You will be "locked in" to only moving forward...but this can be fixed by sprint-jumping in any direction.

You are now in freeplay mode without completing the intro mission smile.gif Just return to the trigger spot if you want to finish them (it can be triggered on or below the bridge...so watch your step if you are running below the bridge).

The Staunton and Shoreside safehouses can be used immediately (by using the tunnel or bridge jump exploits to get over there). If you want to use the Portland safehouse, you'll need to force your way into it by cramming yourself between the wall and a vehicle to get in there (because 8-ball normally unlocks it during the mission). An ambulance works really well to defeat wall collisions. Once opened, it stays open...unless you trigger the bridge cutscene again (which automatically locks it again for 8-ball to open).

Anyway...the upshot is that you can complete nearly all of the optional stuff before any days have passed...just return to the trigger spot to roll the clock back whenever it's approaching midnight, and destroy the Karuma+fall to break out of the mission again. About the only things you can't do without advancing the day counter is Paramedic (because it takes more than 20 hours on the clock to complete), and the Unique Stunt off the bridge divider (all that junk in the way keeps it from being triggered).

It's hard to move around this way...

You can't enter vehicles, therefore you can't attempt any related missions or use them otherwise, you can't attack, meaning the rampages are impossible to complete and you will have a hard time trying to find the "spot" for the mission activation.

But, nonehteless, a good finding, man! Cookies for it! cookie.gif

I don't know what you mean. Once you've broken out of the mission, the player is forced to move forward. However, this is easily fixed. Just sprint-jump a bunch of times (or continue moving forward until you run off the bridge). The game gives you complete control again...you can do whatever you want after that.

BTW the trigger spot is really easy to find...since all that wreckage remains on the bridge.

I can move in any direction, so I'm not "forced" to single direction. I'll check it out once again, but as far as I've seen, you can't enter vehicles or fire weapons if you simply jump off the bridge.

I guess I don't understand what problem is preventing you. I did all the rampages and available side-missions after breaking out of the intro...it did not prevent me from entering vehicles or firing weapons (at least not on PS2).

PC or Xbox user? Maybe some additional step is needed there?

I'm on PC. I'll look inot it one more time. Maybe I couldn't use those controls because I jumped off the bridge, not walked out of it.

Yes, several parts. It'll tell you when you can do whatever in the city (it'll talk about the taxi missions).

Huh... maybe I didn't then.

To each his own...some just like to mess around in freeplay rather than go though the storyline wink.gif

I killed Misty and picked up all her cash. Obviously failed the mission but I had to start it again without the money I picked up.

Heartbreaking.
