Jabalous
While I was doing some search on GTA series through Google, I spotted this link with a title that attracted my attention, which is the same title of this topic. It's as described as an essay written by a graduated student during his time in a college, which talks about the cultural relevance of GTA series to the American culture, and how such games need to be looked at from a scholarly point of view, rather than simply categorizing them as pointless and mindless violent games. The essay is short, and really worth the read, so I thought about sharing it with you. GTA_stu
It was pretty interesting. But I was expecting it to analyse the impact GTA has had on popular culture, instead it analysed the impact popular culture has had on GTA.

Jabalous
"Dr. Carl Johnson"?haha. Yes, this seems to be a joke, but regardless of anything, I think it's a good essay to read. You can find people, even fans of the franchise, still no realizing the clear satirical messages in the game. Reading this essay will help to shed some light on these messages. Pooyan Cyrus
Although it wasn't anything new about GTA Universe's culture, It was interesting. Thanks Dr. Johnson!
Spadge
I think people overrate the satire in GTA, it became a lazy critizism and it has never been any subtle really. I can recall some through a few, but nothing that could engage a disscussion about society. Grand Theft Auto is one of the more subtle games, compared to other games but the analysis of this guy is outdated. It was 2006, where GTA still had to defend itself aginst angry parents. Now it reached more or less an aknowledged blockbuster status. Plus the text of Dr. Johnson is a bit weak, only references with poor analysis and a very short text, not very convincing, if you take it from the current standpoint. Back in 2006 it may have been good to justify that GTA is more than shooting people, but it really is outdated and can't be used for defending GTA's cultural relevance. I think you've never seen any game which is really subtle in it's content, because it wouldn't appeal the main audience, those two elements are to far away from eachother. The thought of a democratized subtle work is idealistic IMO. Edited June 15, 2014 by Spadge007
