Sam998
I think they should keep it up, and break boundaries. Even if it ends up hurting their sales, it would help the industry as a whole. On the flip side, avoiding controversy may end up helping Rockstar lay low for awhile so they don't start getting smacked with AO ratings and such. What do you think? Mister Pink
I say push the envelope. I thought IV didn't really do that except maybe for the prostitute animations being more realistic. Nothing shocked me in that game like previous GTA's have. I hope Rockstar can really go beyond and push the boundaries, create some debate and moreso just make a game that makes people go "WHOAH" can't believe that did that! Psychotic Mind
Push it. Kind of slacked off in 4 I felt with the violence. Decapitation would be a start. Maybe add torture or rape. There should also be more violent missions. I can't recall which mission it was but there was one mission in 4 near the end where you kidnap the women thats selling that pink car. She gets driven to some apartments and tied up and you get to abuse her. Im thinking for 5 something along the lines of drug deals+chainsaw+decapitation. I also think that they shouldn't be controversial for the sole sake of being controversial, but being a little more extreme here and there, not holding anything back, stuff like that I think could really add to the game. Mister Pink
Not to turn this in to a topic on rape but I think if it was to make it in the game it would be a cutscene and the perpetrator will no doubt have to be avenged by you or someone else. Otherwise there's be no hope of it in the game. It couldn't be glorified. Although if it's in films I don't see why it can't be in a game, so long as you are not controlling the player doing it. There's no point of it in the game unless it's detrimental to the story of development of one's character. RUBBΣR░J♢HNNY (スオッ)

Zee
Of COURSE they should!!!! DUH!!!! Isnt that WHY we play GTA in the first place????? Pushing the envelope? Going Pedal to the Metal? isnt that the spirit of GTA? of Tommy Vercetti? or have I just completely lost it? GTA4 was already heavily censored and watered down enough! ("Sorry!" when niko/luis/johnny hit someone? are you f*cking kidding me?) Rockstar needs to go back to its roots and bad.
fgcarva1
I think they should definitely push it, I personally don't feel like seeing gore in GTA. Maybe a torture scene, sure, why the hell not. But walking up to people and making them explode with a punch (like SRIII) is too much. I say add more drug and sexual references, and the use of drugs like in SA. Pushing the envelope is always better, but not necessary. I was satisfied with IV and felt it got the job done.
Jay Murdoch
I actually think they should have more of the sex and drugs theme. There just wasn't enough in IV so I think GTA NEXT needs more of it....with a twist.

Kwandilibro
Push the envelope to an extent. I do think that more gore, bodies being blown/ripped apart would be nice. And the ability to sell drugs, I don't know why R*'s avoiding it, but we need that too. And include nudity, since the label clearly says "nudity". Sex and bare bodies should be allowed, at least occasionally (let's not turn this into a sex simulator though). But rape, besides the fact of being really f*cked up even to hear about let alone to simulate in a game, would only cause more trouble. I don't even think we should see rape in cutscenes. Now torture, meh. Doesn't seem necessary, but I guess in cutscenes maybe. But whatever they do, leave kids out of it. Anything with children will certainly get the game banned. sonnyBlack
I really don't see how having rape in a video game could be seen as a good thing. If that's what they'd have to do to push the envelope, then I'd rather they not bother. The series doesn't need stuff like that, nor does it need some funky sex minigames or anything else that just sounds awkward to have to sit through while playing a game. Even worse if you imagine something like that on Xbox connect. Talk about awkward. GTAs done enough already to push the envelope with offensive content as it is, I really don't see a need to continue that any further. It's a great series and it should be able to keep the public's interests off its own merits (the still fun gameplay), and not have to resort to adding senseless controversial content as a seemingly last ditch effort to try to show the public it can still be edgy. Now's the time to just work on improving the game's fun factor, and not just try to add any further shock value to the series with more and more disturbing crap. You can only take it so far before your game becomes a jumbled mess of offensive content before it becomes less and less appealing to players as more crap is added to it just to spread more controversy. AB0333
Push the envelope. If someone has something against violence, he/she doesn't have to play GTA. R* needs to keep going on its own path, and needs to keep doing what it's doing. Make a big bang, a contrast which will separate them from others, as always. It's a benefit for everyone - for players, who only want to see action, and creators who will realize a huge profit if V makes a big bang, leaving other trademarks in dust. Akhi11eus
I think they could add some edginess without getting into too much trouble with the media. As in many games now, including R*'s extremely successful Red Dead Redemption, the progression of the protagonist's characteristics are driven, albeit in most cases only one of two ways (negative or positive). With the GTA series' pension for groundbreaking, and at times, gritty insights into city life, a combination of this "grit factor" and honor system could expand the GTA gamer's possibilities. this has an opportunity to really make V an edgy game without making it all too controversial by letting the gamer be as evil or angelic as he/she wants. In Red Dead Redemption, the amount of evil one could enact was limited to shooting helpless villagers and their donkeys. With GTA's immersive gameplay involving the seedy underbellies of our favorite urban areas, the potential for some wild and disturbing experiences are there. So, as for the answer to the OP, (should R* essentially go all out, or save its sales) i think it would be more valuable to the game to widen the scope of possibilities instead of, as other posters may desire, take the game down to some raunchy animalistic level in order to "break ground." It simply isn't necessary! and for R* developers to head that way, it would mean the compromising of the series and limit sales. and of course, without sales, there are no more games!
