KilnerLUFC
So, I post a question in a random topic, and due to the importance of the question, I want to know when I receive a reply. This question could be in really active topic though, so it gets ignored for a while, up until I get bored of checking the topic every day. Now, obviously, due to the nature of how busy the topic is, i don't want to be subscribing to this topic. Now a few weeks pass, and someone could answer my question, but I won't see it due to me forgetting about the topic, or missing it because of the amount of replies/pages of the topic. So, coming to my point, is there anyway we could intergrate a system such as Facebook/Twitter, where we can somehow tag members in a post, which then goes onto send some type of notification to the tagged member? Maybe even add a new link next to "My Assistant" on the toolbar, or even within one of the menus already there, that lists all the current posts you have been tagged in. Obviously, there are ways this could be abused, but putting this factor aside, what do you guys think to the general idea itself?
radioman
There's already 2 ways to get notified of responses to topics you post(or post in)-one is by clicking the "enable notifications of replies" tab before posting your response(this will send you an e-mail to your e-mail address that was used when you signed up for the Forums & 2 is by clicking on your user name and then clicking on "Find posts by this member"-I use this one all the time and it is very helpful for finding which topics have been replied to as if the little envelope icon is a dark color, it means there are new replies and if it is a light color(most of the time it is Blue or orange-depending on the type of topic), and whoila....So, in conlusion, there are 2 ways already to know when you get new replies to topics you post in.... Remember, this site IS NOT Facebook or Myspace OR Twitter, etc...and are NOT affiliated with those sites, and as such, since most likely those are copyrighted features?, it would not be possible to add those kinds of features....? Here are 3 ways to find topics replies for topics you reply to/post: Edited June 23, 2011 by radioman
KilnerLUFC
Did you actually read my post properly, or just scan through it and totally ignore the main point? I already stated that I don't want to be subscribed to the topic, due to how many notifications I would receive on a daily basis, if it happens to be an active topic, yet none of the new posts would actually answer my question. Kind of the same thing can be said for the "Find All Posts" option aswell, since I'd be having to check through each post each day/week. Remember, this site IS NOT Facebook or Myspace OR Twitter, etc...and are NOT affiliated with those sites, and as such, since most likely those are copyrighted features?, Reeeeaaaally? I never knew that. I only used Facebook/twitter as an example of how the tag would work.
anuj
Seems like it would require some very high-level changes to implement this sort of thing. I know it's already integrated into some other forum software, but I doubt we have the time or resources to do it here. If you really need to know if someone directly responded to you, try going to Search and namesearching yourself. It'll show if your name has been mentioned or quoted in any posts. Sam998
Would it be very hard to detect people quoting and stuff? For example if someone replies to me on Youtube I get a notification, but I don't get a notification every time someone posts on that video. Maybe if quoting someone acted like replying to them on Youtube?

Maybe if quoting someone acted like replying to them on Youtube? If that was in any way possible, it's probably the best idea for how to make it work. This topic was brought up as I was browsing an old topic, and only just noticed someone had given me an important answer, yet it was too late to have noticed it, so didn't give much thought into how much time would have to go into implementing it and whatnot, but was hoping that it was an easy script. Well there should be a system like when we post topics and have options like PM Notifications should be sent to us when someone replies, which can be a feature that could be marked/unmarked when posting new topics. KilnerLUFC
Good idea, but it goes against what I'm trying to solve. You can already subscribe to a topic/post, but am wanting it that if someone directly replies to you, then you would get a notification. As mentioned above, using the quote system would be good, but then again it would only work if someone actually quoted you, rather then the most common way of "@Whoever". Andrew
I'm unsure as to this system and why it is actually needed in the first place? From what I can see it is for people who are too lazy to check topics that they've replied to?
Miro
I think he means that active topics (such as the Genesis one, at the moment) get a lot of replies. So, if you post a question in it, it may be answered by someone but you may overlook it since there are too new many posts in that topic. Certain sections/topics are far too popular to keep checking every day, so you give up checking, only for the question to be answered. Back when I first joined the forum, I found the activeness of the forum to be overwhelming, and lost alot of topics that I'd replied in.
