GeForce vs Radeon and very high shadows

Both are just about the same in performance, but the Radeon HD 6950 comes in handy with it's 2 GB of VRAM (ofcourse, if you take the 2 GB version).

Although, it seems like IV likes nVidia more; I've also got that Radeon (the MSi version) and all games I have are maxed out, except for IV.

At IV, I can barely hold 15 FPS while the sliders are at 20 View and 40 Detail. But, please be aware that my processor is the probable cause if that framerate.

I gues that if you have a strong processor, the HD 6950 will most probably also give you a high framerate.

About the shadows, I think they look the same at both videocards. It's still IV's engine turn.gif

Ditch patch 5, 6 and 7 and go for patch 4 (1.0.4.0) and you'll be able to max out pretty much every setting without huge performance impact.

on my rig (hd6950) the game runs smooth with everything maxed except for very high shadows which you helped me out with. Don't listen to fanboys.. both are viable options. 6950 is slightly faster and slightly more expensive. 6950 uses a little less power while gtx560 is a bit less noisy. I believed the people saying GTA4 could not be run properly by AMD cards until you gave me the golden tip. Now I know they're foolish fanboys.

I had the same choice, I chose the 6950, turned out I was wrong. Many graphical problems occur with games, and the drivers just make it worse. As for the RAM, there is a 2GB version of the 560Ti, but the best one is the SuperClocked 560Ti which equals the GTX 570 in performance.

And just like Exxon said, GTA IV likes nVidia more, so you better choose the GTX 560Ti, and better the 560Ti SC version.

@Vibonacci: Well, the truth is even AMD themselves sometimes just cannot guarantee the same stability of their VGAs which have the same GPU at the same game, with a same version of CCC sarcasm.gif

It's not fanboy-ism, it's a so called "experiences". Not saying HD6950 is bad, it's a very good card, especially when you can unlock it to a HD6970, but IV is a completely different story.

Point is everybody should make their own drivers.

Many graphical problems occur with games

This statement is ery bold and worthless without proof. Why can I run a whole library of games (just cause2, ut3, ut2k4, dirt2, crysis, dragon age, 3dmark11, sc2, witcher 2 etc.) without any problems? GTA4 is the only game that gave me problems and it was caused by a certain setting. If you own a hd6950 and you find the urge the return it, I believe your judgement is clouded.

And what does it actually if a game 'likes' a certain company that manufactures graphic cards? State in which way it works better on a certain brand.

Oh they can, not 100% (like FFXIV, DA2) but in most case they are better than AMD at making good driver sigh.gif Try using some products of both and draw some "points" yourself dozingoff.gif

HD6870 performs the same as a GTX 560 Ti

HD6950 is faster than both of them.

Both graphic cards will provide great experience with the game.

I've got a HD5850, played GTA IV, TLAD, TBOGT all have no issues with it.

I did. I have.

I have a 7950GX2 (memorabilia) a 8800GT, GTX260 a 5870 2GB and a 6970. Both had their share of the problems.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about and simply delusional.

What kind of problems did they "Share"? I'm curious rolleyes.gif

And hey, this is a discussion about VGA, not people. Stop judging people just because they say things that you don't like dozingoff.gif It's childish, lol.

Constant nvlddmkm.sys BSOD on both 8800GT and 260GTX. Massive tearing problems on 260GTX and it would not downclock when i would finally get 2 monitors running. 5870 would give me giant cursor here and then with multiple monitor set up. No problems with 6970 to date.

Fanboys gonna fan.

Both sides have problems. Deal with it.

Did Nvidia give you any performance related problem? Did Nvidia give you any crazy micro-stuttering. Have you ever use any multi-gpu setup of both? Do you know how painful it's in order to get a Crossfire setup work properly?

You must see the big picture here, and yes, fanboys gonna fan.

I point out problems from both sides. You point out problems from one side. Performance problems? No. My GTX 260 killing my electricity bill by 20 so bucks a month because it failed to downclock to idle speeds. Yeah.

Last word out of me related to this issue, you're denser than a mule.

It's unnecessary to be such an ass just because of some VGA sigh.gif I can point out performance related from only one side just because I can remember having problem with only one side, doesn't that make any sense wink.gif

Try to run games like Metro 2033, GTAIV with ENB&AA Enabled with HD5970, and compare it to a GTX570 dozingoff.gif don't be shocked.

I can state many (performance) issues with my old GT 220, so far I can't with my HD 6950*

But I gues that's just due to the fact that the GT 220 is an incredibly awful card wink.gif

*Games I (literally) maxed out:

  • DiRT 2 ~30 FPS
  • DiRT 3 ~35 FPS
  • Just Cause 2 ~50 FPS
  • Call of Duty 4/6/7 ~60 FPS FPS Black Ops, ~90 FPS MW 1/2
  • Crysis 2 ~40 FPS
  • Left 4 Dead 2 ~60 FPS (VSync)
  • GRID ~60 FPS (VSync)
  • Mafia 2 ~35 FPS (PhysicX High, VSync)

Those "nVidia: The way it meant to be played" games obviously like GeForce more.

The 6950 is better then the 560ti, but we need your system specs before you upgrade

I patently disagree with the statement that the gt 220 is an awful card. its fine playing gta IV @ 1024x768 with a quad core cpu.

1024x768 isn't what I would call a good resolution to be playing games at

well, i like it just fine. I have an acer 243xw that i use in the winter with the gtx 285, but use an nec mitsubishi 15" in the summer with gt 220/9600 gso/9800 gt. i don't see the difference, except in power usage

For the next gen games, or hardcore gamers, it really is an awful card

I agree with the 1st part of this sentence but not the 2nd

A 'Hardcore Gamer' does not need the best graphics card around.

I would even go as far as to say a hardcore gamer can be found on retro computers and consoles where graphics are pretty much as basic as they come - It's all about the playability for the majority of gamers - If graphics are good as well, then that is a bonus but not a prerequisite

This infactuation with graphics is very troubling, more than likely the cause of the gaming industry's current obsession with First Person Shooters

Sorry to bump topic, especially when were are discussing Graphics cards lol

For 'prerequisite' & 'infactuation' I had to use Google Translate to know what it means sneaky2.gif

But ok, you're right about that. But I think hardcore gamers often want to get maximum joy and graphics.

But hey, that's just me bro wink.gif

By the way, this is how Google defines 'Hardcore Gamer':

'Game fan who reads the papers and websites, wants to know the latest news about new things about games and

the game industry; plays about everything, or everything atleast once; has all consoles at home, so everything

from the latest generation and the most important game from every genre'

I just saw benchmarks of GTA IV for (560Ti & 6950), they're almost equal, the 6950 is slightly faster than the 560Ti (1-2 FPS), but in Bad Company 2, the 560Ti outran the 6970!

They're both almost equal, though I recommend nVidia, cause of the better compatibility with games.
