Exxon
Hi everyone, My friend has got a problem with his computer. If he turns it on, he gets a blue screen with text in it, he said he saw 'crash' and 'dump' in it. I know this is very vage, but I haven't been at his home yet. I'm not sure, but this could look like it: Don't know if it's important, but he already had issues with his computer. When he played DiRT 2, he (and I) saw black stripes appearing sometimes everywhere and nowhere (very quickly). It looked like this, but then black and grey stripes, and then every 10 seconds at a random place on the screen: Is that related? Any idea's except for those in the picture? Sniperrrman
This could be a corrupted GPU driver. Download DriverSweeper and clean the videocard drivers, reboot in safe mode and clean it once more, then reboot in normal mode and reinstall the drivers from the website. Exxon
That's for the 2nd issue, I already could think of that But it's more about the first one, would it help if I install my old GT 220 in his computer? Because, the computer only reaches the blue screen
Sniperrrman
Sure, you can try that. But does the computer beep in when it starts up? Or does it start up and crash with blue screen immediately?

If I'm right he said that he sees the blue screen after he turns it on. But when exactly, I don't know As for the beeps, I also don't. I dó know what you mean as I also have a motherboard which beeps if something is wrong. Edited May 21, 2011 by Exxon
Wolf68k
What exactly is the BSOD he's getting? Tell him to take a picture of it and send it to you. An example of the BSOD doesn't do us any good to find the problem
Exxon
I'll see when I'll visit him again, I don't see him often and he barely uses his computer
sivispacem
My guess is, if he's seen artefacts (the black lines) then it's something to do with his GPU. The last one I had die was due to a fan motor failure, leading to it overheating and basically cooking itself. Very similar symptoms- random coloured lines across the screen followed by BSOD's. Exxon
So I shouldgive him my old videocard? Actually, that one (GT 220) also reached 105 C for an unknown time onces
Sniperrrman
I dó know what you mean as I also have a motherboard which beeps if something is wrong. No, it it supposed to beep. When it doesn't beep, something is wrong. So the opposite of what you said there. Not that it matters much but still And yes, just give him your video card. Also try taking a picture of the BSOD
Exxon
When it doesn't beep, something is wrong. So the opposite of what you said there. Not that it matters much but still My motherboard always sounds one beep, this means everything is Ok. I heard about 4 beeps orso when installing my new videocard; turned out I only connected one 6-pin instead of two 6-pins But, my friend's motherboard doesn't sound any beeps, never. So we can't see what's wrong by listening to the sounds
Sniperrrman
Well, if his motherboard doesn't beep then that could indicate that something is wrong with it..
Exxon
No I don't think so, I've never heard a beep at his computer, never and neither when he received it. I'm just gonna put my GT 220 in his computer when he and I got time and see what's wrong with his GT 230 (yes, 230 and not 240 )
Wolf68k
Well, if his motherboard doesn't beep then that could indicate that something is wrong with it.. No, it could just mean he doesn't have a case/mobo speaker. I use to run my system for years that way because the case I have doesn't come with a speaker. @Exxon Until you know what the BSOD on start up really is and what it means, putting your video card in there could be a complete waste of time. Just call him up. Tell him to start up his system and read off everything it says. You write it down and you tell us.
Sniperrrman
It's worth trying if they live close to each other. But yes, try to take a picture or something from the BSOD

Exxon
About the crashing computer of my friend, it's up and running again. Turned out to be a virus
Wolf68k
Thus why we needed details about the BSOD. The one you showed was a screen shot of one that had a virus (I had looked it up before re-reading the topic again). But since that wasn't taken by your friend I couldn't base my answer on that.
