JiM-4a2c
Why did GTA IV do This ?? Hi, i'm having a problem with my computer which is driving me insane.. My computer freezes after 4-5 minutes of usage..! It freezes any where, i mean in bios setup, before booting, while booting or inside OS.. It just runs for 5 minutes.. Actually it all started on this day when i was playing GTA IV, my pc froze after an hour of playing and since then it keeps freezing after a couple of minutes.. No BSOD, error message or anything like that, the display just freezes and keybord, mouse stops responding... The fact is that i know my GPU(nv gf-8400gs) is responsible for this problem 'cause when i remove it from PCIe everything turns back to normal..!! I tried everything.. I also applied new thermal paste on gpu but nothing changed... Its not my PSU either 'cause everything was fine for like a month... I tried bios flashing but unfortunately i'm unable to find the bios file of my GPU, its biostar geforce 8400GS 1024 mb DDR3... Can anyone tell me what happened to my gpu?? Please help.. mkey82
Pretty much what uni said, man. This sounds to me like a low power problem, what kind of PSU do you have? Try unplugging as many devices as you can, remove RAM if you have more then one sticks and leave the GPU plugged in.
NaidRaida
I had also a computer that just freeze after some time and nothing more happened. The PSU was damaged. I´ve changed it and the computer runs normal.
JiM-4a2c
why didnt this happen a month ago?? I used this psu for a month with no problems, why're these problems occuring now???
mkey82
It usually takes time for equipment to get damaged. Basically, if there is a problem with the PSU (like not enough power) it will output all that it can and maybe something more, causing extra strain on the components and probably overheating. This is nothing out of the ordinary.
JiM-4a2c
thank you for help.. I'll see what changing the psu does... But what if the problem persists???
mkey82
Well, that's what you usually call testing.

JiM-4a2c
I already have 450w PSU, I mean all these problems are occuring on a 450w PSU..!!! Does that mean I need a 500w PSU?? Dont you think 450w would be more than enough for a GeForce 8400GS?? One more thing, I've seen that usually GeForce 8400GS is a 512mb DDR2 GPU but mine is 1024mb DD3, have you guys ever heard of such GPU??
Exxon
Maybe if it's a sh*tty one or a damaged one, it's easily possible 450 W is not enough
JiM-4a2c
Maybe if it's a sh*tty one or a damaged one, it's easily possible 450 W is not enough That means i need 500w.. Right? I'll be able to finally play GTA IV in normal speed.. Right?
Exxon
I don't know actually. Maybe 450 W is enough, but maybe it's a very bad power suply or it's damaged and due so, you'll get this.
mkey82
450W should be more then enough for that PC, but it all depends on the state of the PSU and the quality. Often with crappy PSUs the rated power is nowhere near the actual power output.
JiM-4a2c
Could this be something not related to PSU? Something wrong with GPU?

marmoo
Could it be a under voltage problem of motherboard? Undervoltage could explain hanging during intensive programs such as GTA IV
JiM-4a2c
ok here're full PC specs: Amd sempron 2.8ghz (dont say its trash, i know it is) 2gb ddr3 ram GeForce 8400GS 1024mb ddr3 Mobo: MSI p61 or g31 i dont know exactly.. PSU: frontech 450w One more thing, my pc freezes after 2-3 minutes of usage, no matter if i boot os or not, it just freezes in 3 minutes.. Even in the bios setup.. When i remove gpu it works fine then!!
Gta4Freak-2011
Overheating.
LuKeltic
Try leaving it untouched for 2 or 3 days to cool down and settle, then start it up again (but do NOT play any games when you do). Use it for a little while doing basic stuff like using the internet. If it seems fine after this, then it could well be your GPU overheating. If this is the case, continue using it normally (playing games or whatever), if it crashes again when doing something intensive like playing games, then you need to think about getting your GPU repaired or buying a new one. If nothing changes and after a few days it still keeps crashing after a few minutes no matter what you're doing, then go ahead and try a new PSU (go for 500w to be safe). JiM-4a2c
Thank you everyone for support.. You guys're awesome.. Heres something new, i changed something in bios that says 'pci-e frequency' or something, its default value was 100mhz i changed it to 150mhz... So far i'm having no issues, i played gta iv for like 1 hour and computer is still running.. I'm not sure if this is the real fix though... Anything can happen. And yeah, i had tried leaving computer untouched for 3 days but it didnt help.. I'm happy but nervous at the same time, anything can happen. JiM-4a2c
Nope.... I rebooted it and it froze again... Checked the bios and 150mhz is still there.. Idk how it ran magically for a couple of hours...? Cant say much about overheating 'cause it freezes while i'm in bios setup... Just runs for 2-3 minutes.. Any gusses anyone???
