Edit: I have a couple of guest/trial passes, let me know if you are keen in giving SC2 a try and I can maybe send one over.

Starcraft II

It has been quite a while since I have posted on these forums, but I thought I would crawl out of my little cave in order to see if anybody else on these boards shared a similar passion for this glorious game.

I did a search and there are no active topics on this; there are a couple of attempts, however I hope this warrants a re-post and can spark some interest in the game.

What is it?

From Wikipedia,

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. A sequel to the award-winning 1998 video game StarCraft, the game was released worldwide on July 27, 2010.[9] It is split into three installments: the base game with the subtitle Wings of Liberty, and two upcoming expansion packs, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.[10]

Set in the 26th century in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy, the game revolves around three species: the Terrans, human exiles from Earth; the Zerg, a super-species of assimilated life forms;[11] and the Protoss, a species with vast mental powers. Wings of Liberty focuses on the Terrans, while the expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void will focus on the Zerg and Protoss, respectively. The game is set four years after the events of 1998's StarCraft: Brood War, and follows the exploits of Jim Raynor as he leads an insurgent group against the autocratic Terran Dominion. The game includes both new and returning characters and locations from the original game.

The game was met with very positive reviews from critics, receiving an aggregated score of 93% from Metacritic. Similar to its predecessor, StarCraft II was praised for its engaging gameplay, as well as its introduction of new features and improved storytelling, while criticism targeted features that existed in the original StarCraft game but were removed in StarCraft II, such as the lack of LAN play and the decision to split up multiplayer regions. In its first month on sale, over three million copies of StarCraft II were sold worldwide.

If anybody can remind me on how to use youtube tags it would be great, until then the best I can do is hyperlinks.

A crazy ass pro Free-for-all game (part 1, part 2 and 3 can be found following link)

When I say pro I do mean pro; Starcraft II has established itself as an E-sport, with people playing it as a full time paid profession, with tournaments offering prize pools of thousands of dollars, as well as emerging sponsorship deals for teams.

Tournaments: Including, but most definitely not limited to;

GSL

NASL

YouTube Casters offering hours of free high level commentaries include;

HuskyStarcraft

HD Starcraft

PsyStarcraft

Team Liquid is the place to go for full coverage of Starcraft I and II content, as well as community interaction and strategy discussion. You could also check out the Battlenet forums, however it is usually full of whining 12 year olds, so I would recommend you stay away unless looking for some funzies.

I think it is an absolutely brilliant game; I don't get to play as much as I like but I have clocked up a over 1000 games in my time, and it is still not getting old. Single player campaign is a blast but the real fun lies in competitive multiplayer; the matchmaking system ensures you are always getting matched up against players of equal skill, from the lowly bronze league to the top of grandmasters league. A total of 7 different leagues (as well as a division ranking within those leagues) provides ample potential for competition and improvement. In addition to competitive 1v1 there also exists 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, Free for all and user-created custom games. There is literally hundreds of hours of good value from this game, and it has one of the most passionate followings out of all games I have seen.

Anywho, enough of me rambling, if you dont have it, I urge you to check it out! If you do, feel free to post any comments, discussions, ect. Anyone follow the tournament scene much? Favourite player? Thoughts on Patch 1.3.3?

Lets hope there is some interest out there smile.gif

PS Feel free to post your Battlenet ID if you wish, I believe mine is Ryder.797 (I always get the number mixed up!)

I'm not strong at multiplayer, so I mostly stick to singleplayer, co-op and custom games. I prefer Terran and Protoss too. Hopefully this thread takes off, because SC2 is arguably the best RTS game out there right now.

Yeah I am a Protoss player, but I sometimes random in team games, since you miss out on a lot if you only main one race.

But yeah I used to be quite put off laddering, but they removed loss count from profile, and once you accept that you are only supposed to win ~50% of the time ladderin isn't as off putting, especially if you make an effort to be mannered during games.

But the custom games are good fun, the reason I originally bought it was because of Nexus Wars notify.gif and Starjeweled is pretty addictive too. I had no interest in RTS before this.

I'm surprised there isn't more interest on these boards, then again this is a board for GTA so it is understandable why there is more interest for 3rd person sandbox games, and I guess to a lesser extent FPS.

I forgot to mention I play on SEA server and occassionally NA server.

I also have a couple of guest/trial passes, if anybody is serious about giving it a go I would be more than happy to throw a few over. It gives 7 hours of gameplay or 2 weeks of installation, whichever comes first ( I think).

I used to watch my sister play the first one. It looks fun, but I sucked absolutely terribly at it.

Lasted like a minute in one match....I tried to build turrets for the impending zergling rush but it wasn't enough....

I did have fun watching that 7 way FFA video in your OP.

I understood a lot of the game, but just couldn't quite pull it off.

This is one of those games that all I can do is watch. I appreciate the skill involved, but I can't play it myself...too hard.

I can never pull the whole multitask factor of the game. I set myself an objective, stick to it, and a lot of the time i end up waiting, and i've got armies of cannon fodder just standing around doing nothing.
