Runey
Another case of video games being scrutinized by the media. Had this been a movie, the article wouldn't have been written. Just interested to see your views on this. News Report

Xboxless
All I have to say is that yeah, sure they are making fun of an adoptee, but they are not glorifying it. If they made it sound like making fun of adopted people is hilarious then maybe there is a problem, but NOWHERE, NOWHERE did they glorify it. This dude needs to grow some balls, I WILL NOT live in a world controlled by that much PC. Screw that!

Video games are still being seen as kids' toys. I disagree. This article portrays video games as children's toys so they can try to make this father's claims valid so they can have a story. For the most part the perception that video games are for kids is gone. There are still those over 45 years hold out old farts that are scared of video games, and trust news sources like this. Don't worry, they're dying off faster than you think, and soon they'll all be gone, and the only people left are those with actual experience with video games. Whatever the new entertainment format is, it'll get more scrutinized by the generation that was there before. And you're right, it is dying off. Robinski
If they made it sound like making fun of adopted people is hilarious then maybe there is a problem But it is hilarious, just like every thing else that Glados says. Anyway, yeah this is just the old media taking any chance they can get to take a stab at that scary new medium. They honestly believe that all gamers are 21-24 year old man children who just eat up and mentally ingest everything we're exposed. Games are getting bigger and bigger, and it will inevitably take time for established institutions like the media t properly catch up in certain places. This sort of thing, and the violence debate, will eventually fade away as more people are exposed to games as a legitimate media form, or rather that people who've grown up with games replace those in the industry who are still fearful of them. Sure, it's been blown out of proportion, but less people than ever will take this as a proper criticism of the games industry just as a movie where the villain taunts the protagonist for being adopted getting slammed wouldn't be taken seriously. We're just not quite there yet. All that said, this is just sloppy journalism. They use the quote from Wheatley rather than Glados: "Alright, fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty, fatty no parents,". Whithout giving too much away, Wheatley is framed as an idiot at every turn, someone to be ignored. They could have at least used some of Glados' lines on the subject, or would that have been hypocritical considering she actually defends the idea of adoption? "What's wrong with being adopted?" is the exact line I'm pretty sure, to which Wheatley has no real answer except "er...er.. Lack of parents!?" Kevin...
a popular kid's video game And then, suddenly, the little validity this article had was thrown into the storm. They also claim that the game is an educational game. Here's a link to the news broadcast, sorry couldn't find it on youtube. The Broadcast While I would agree that Portal and Portal 2 are both vastly more educational, in the problem solving sense, than something like GTA...its still no education game. There are idiots out there who have tried and failed to throw GTA and Saints Row to the lions and failed who are now trying to take games, proclaim it to be a children's game because its not an M or AO rated, and nit pick everything done and everything said in the game to make it look like some horrible game for children. If this were movies, ones like Titanic would be considered a children's movies in par with Barney and Disney's Aladdin just because of the rating. Its all a media-hyped, bullsh*t-frenzy meant to grab more viewers and get more hits on the web for being ill-conceived, half-witted drivel rather than actually being informative or providing a subjective and thought provoking response or reaction. For example, during WWII, the news the public viewed was news. Sure it had some little white lies thrown in here and there to perk up America's population and not lead them to think they just sent their boys all off to die...but in the end it was just f*cking news. If WWIII were to break out tomorrow, we wouldn't be concerned with the movements of our or the enemy's forces, the political discourse of our enemies and allies, or the current body count. We would be focused on where our first lady was visiting and what color dress she was wearing, what famous acting couple split up, or what kind of clothes are coming out next week from such and such soon-to-be-forgotten rapper...because we all know its not about how you hide from the thermal radiation in an atomic blast, but who you are wearing when you are doing it. Idiots are and will always be idiots. Nothing is for the common good of the population...its about getting the quickest dollar. Now, instead of getting straight-foreward, important, and much needed news, all we get is garbage with a little bit of important news thrown in for sh*ts and giggles. Great job society...you f*cked yourself in the ass and we are stuck seeing this sh*t instead of what is really important in today's world.

The Broadcast While I would agree that Portal and Portal 2 are both vastly more educational, in the problem solving sense, than something like GTA...its still no education game. That is what I mean. When I call something an "educational game", I think of a game that was design to be educational in the first place, games like Math Blaster and Reader Rabbit, come to mind. So a game like Portal 2, which its main reason for existing is just as a form of entertainment, is not an educational game, can it be used in a teaching fashion? Yeah it can be, but that is not the main point of it. And everything else you said, I agree with all of it. Formerly known as The General
*MURDOC*
Exactly, just because you learn things, or get a better understand of things (math, physics etc.) from a videogame, doesn't mean it's an "educational game".
