About Shireen. I was eating chicken and rice, while watching that scene, and as I was going to take a bite, that's when her screaming really kicked in. I couldn't take that bite. I was physically repulsed in that moment. That little actress has a great scream. Very convincing.

Man, I've been wrestling with this whole thing for a few days now, and I think I'm starting to give Stannis the benefit of the doubt.

I guess the reason why my initial reaction was utter disgust (other than that it was utterly disgusting) is that I kind of related the two to myself and my own daughter. I would never do something like that, I would burn literally the entire world before I even considered hurting her.

Stannis feels he's the best chance for the realm to survive winter, he's been told he's done prophesied hero and he can't stop at anything to make it happen. He's trying to save the world, while she IS my world. Two similar situations, but enough differences to warrant a reconsideration. I guess I can say I wouldn't do the same thing, but I'd also have dipped out of town once my bro died.

Essentially, I lost a bit of love for him, but not enough to actually move him down the rankings.

Additionally, consider the contrast to Cersei: she would destroy the realm for her children, whereas Stannis...well, you know.

BS. He was just greedy.

I thought he would have more honor than that. I know he's no Ned Stark, but have some principles at least. About Cersei, the only redeeming quality about her is that she's a loving mother.

I found the moment where the two soldiers grab her and the reaction she makes kinda sad. Good acting.

You know I'd gradually been shifting towards Team Stannis. Then that bombshell. I hope this pushes Davos over the edge and makes him f*ck the Red Bitch up big time.

I'm still finding it difficult to really give a sh*t about Dany's storyline. A bit more interesting with Jorah and Tyrion in the loop, and hopefully they scare off Sleazeball Noharis.

my girlfriend was working this weekend so we only just got around to watching the last episode tonight. about 30 minutes ago. relatively shocking but I feel like we also saw a lot of this coming.

the sacrifice was definitely alluded to.

the dragon(s) were obviously going to appear at the arena.

It's probably less stupid than the way his camp caught fire though.

now aren't we supposed to believe that Melissandre caused the fires?

she steps out of her tent all calm and collected, glances around, fires suddenly erupt from multiple corners of the camp, and she just stands there watching while everybody else scrambles for their lives.

she causes the fire because she knows Stanny will send away Davos for resupply because she knows Davos is the only person in the entire camp who would have put up a serious fight against the sacrifice. right? she's already an extremely manipulative red-headed whore. she's forever trying to drive a wedge between Davos and Stanny.

but I was never big on Stannis anyhow.

probably my aversion to religious fanaticism in general. since he was introduced he's just been pussy-whipped by this bitch. now to the point that he would kill off his only child in order to change the weather? he's weak. Stannis is weak sauce. he's been weak all along but this event illustrates it for the world to witness.

Davos has to abandon Stannis when he finds out.

his army already seems demoralized. what happens when they hit the next roadblock in their campaign? this is the beginning of his decline... or descent into some kind of madness.

I'm still just waiting on the Stark resurgence and for Dany to begin making her way across the Narrow Sea. my money is mostly behind Little Finger, Varys, and their schemes. it's also going to be fun watching Arya hunt the Kingsguard who she stumbled across, especially since the one senior Guard definitely recognizes her. aside from the parents and whats his face, the whole Stark clan is basically intact... they just don't realize it.

Sansa, Bran, Rickon, Arya, Jon.

we haven't seen the boys since they were attacked by those Wights who killed Jojen and split them apart. but they're supposed to be out there somewhere traveling with that girl and Osha.

I agree that Varys and Littlefinger are the one's to watch.

"He would see this country burn if he could be King of the Ashes."

Prophetic words in my book. But then again, maybe I'm just a bit of a Baelish fanboy.

ShowRickon is supposedly with the Umbers at the Last Hearth (named as such because it's the last noble refuge before the wall).

I reckon Davos will come across Rickon either on his way to the wall or on the way back with a contingent of Northern lords (Umbers and their vassals) who will say they'll fight with Stannis to free Winterfell (the Umbers have been conspicuously absent in the campaign to free Winterfell) . Either they'll all be repulsed by what Stannis did (affront to the "Old Gods") or they'll turn on him when he inevitably tries to burn Winterfell's godswood. Ultimately I see it ending badly for Stannis. Rickon will be the key to the North after the battle and Davos will become something of a father figure to him. I see a similar outcome happening in the books, but the route to that outcome will be completely different (Stannis will free Winterfell and get killed heroically fighting against the Others; I do like Yen's idea about him becoming the next LC though).

They've absolutely destroyed Stannis' character. Just when I thought they were finally going to make him more like he is in the books, they do this. Make no mistake, Shireen will burn in the books, but it certainly won't be with Stannis' consent (Melisandre will probably do it out of desperation for some spell, or for a reason I won't get into due to massive spoilers). She's his sole heir, he doesn't even want the throne (it's all about duty to him and removing the corrupt Lannisters) and it's just something he wouldn't do (one of the reasons he makes Davos his Hand is that Davos prevents him from burning Edric Storm).

Stannis really isn't a fanatic in the books. He says he stopped believing the day he saw his parents die at sea. He makes use of Melisandre out of desperation.

Baelish is the boss. It's unfortunate that Aiden Gillen has seen fit to slur more and more into an absolutely surreal accent as the show has progressed, though.

I don't really know how they arrived at writing Stannis in the show the way they have. I mean, did they read the books and interpret him as a religious fanatic (and getting it so very wrong in the process) or is it a case of them thinking pussy whipped religious fanatic makes for better TV?
Contrast last episode with BookStannis (in roughly the same spot)

Clayton Suggs - "A sacrifice will prove our faith still burns true, Sire."
Godry the Giantslayer - "The old gods of the north have sent this storm upon us. Only R'hllor can end it. We must give him an unbeliever."
Stannis - "Half my army is made up of unbelievers. I will have no burnings. Pray harder."
:inlove:

Speaking of Baelish, going to get wild with a show prediction right here:

Caveat emptor: I doubt this'll actually happen but remains a possibility
The way the Battle of Winterfell is playing out, in the show, seems to mirrow in a lot of ways the Battle of Blackwater in Season 2. Stannis, with a superior force marches upon his enemy, only to meet with misfortune involving fire (Wildfire at the Blackwater wrecking his fleet, Ramsay and co burning his supplies en route to Winterfell). Despite the set back, Stannis overcomes the adversity and the battle begins. Only for a third party to intervene and snatch away victory from Stannis' grasp.
The third party in this instance? Littlefinger and the Vale Army. It wouldn't be completely out of left field as he's mentioned the possibility twice this season alone IIRC and as we all know, Littlefinger has a teleporter so no distance is too great for him to traverse.

now aren't we supposed to believe that Melissandre caused the fires?

Nah. I mean, I totally get how you can come to that conclusion (I can see it too) but I think the way the scene played out eludes to her having seen this happen through her fire visions and deduced that it would push Stannis to do what she wanted. Or just the latter.

I've no doubt the fires were all Ramsay and his "twenty good men" even if fires erupting in a super organized fashion during the middle of a blizzard with them having already come and gone without being seen are completely illogical.

Anyway, I'm half expecting them to have Davos act out of character and be totally chill about Shireen when he finds out.

Yeah that would just be too much. Whilst it's certainly a possibility with D&D at the helm, I can't see it happening. I think the emphasised relationship between Shireen and Davos (he's like her surrogate father when Stannis is busy) suggests that last episode's events will create an unbridgeable rift between Stannis and Davos. Whereas Stannis has been utterly destroyed on screen and makes me wish Joss Whedon had creative control instead of D&D*, Davos has been very faithfully portrayed and I'd hate for him to be ruined too. You're right though, it is a possibility. I think a lot of ShowDavos' devotion to Stannis was centered on his only son having a place in the world as a squire and future landed knight due to Stannis, but now that his son is dead there's no reason other than loyalty to remain by Stannis' side, and that loyalty isn't going to make Davos side with someone who'd burn their own daughter for better chances at winning a battle.

*They've done a great job with many aspects of the show (it's not like I've stopped watching), but I disagree with some of their decisions, in particular Stannis' plot-line and characterisation.

lol no way.

Davos is one of the few people in the show who follows his conscience.

they setup the whole scene with the little toy carving and the Dance of Dragons story to reinforce how attached Davos is to the girl and how much he loathes leaving her 'alone' with Stanny and Melly. that scene was so entrenched and overstated they might as well have written the message in blood all over the walls of her tent while they were chatting; "BITCH, YOU'RE NOT SAFE HERE"

and Davos gave her one extra big hug and long look into her eyes before departing. like he knew it was the last time he'd see her. he's gonna' rage like a mother f/cker when he finds out.

Yeah losing his son (and only son in the show) fighting Stannis' war then losing (basically) his surrogate daughter to appease a false deity at the behest of a woman he reviles is really going to turn him off Stannis. I think he'll see Rickon as his redemption.

They've put that scene between Davos and Shireen last episode for a reason, to highlight his relationship with her. Davos was the only guy i liked in Stannis's story, since the beginning of the show.

Well the show just went full bananas....

I guess its time to go back to my cave and wait until GRRM finishes the sixth book.

Still Stannis is the best candidate for king. GO STANNIS GO.... Oh wait, yeah the last part of A Dance With Dragons was.... And then Jon....

Westeros is doomed.

I'm completely convinced that...

Ellaria Sand will "taste the Dornishman's Wife" in this episode. Because...

-Her kneeling doesn't strike me as genuine. She will likely make another attempt at kidnapping or killing Myrcella.

-Doran rather ominously told her she will not get another chance.
-there is a publicity shot that shows Areo and his "wife" with Ellaria in the background. That's some meta foreshadowing, I think.
-falls in line with Obara's actor being uncertain of her own return for S6

-I don't see her arc continuing from here. Her main trait was being a thorn in Doran's side and she accomplished that goal with gusto.

-she's also a very unpopular character seemingly tailor-made to annoy viewers.

Also have a hunch that Myranda's going to meet her fate at Sansa's hands and possibly that Dolorous Edd will be taking the place of Ser Patrek, but those I'm not as confident in.

Just leaving this here for posterity.

If you want to avoid a potential spoiler for tonight's episode, do not watch the "previously on..." clips. If you're okay with spoilers, watch (or click) away.

What are the odds that...

The mystery of who Jon's parents are gets revealed tonight?

They've certainly dropped enough R+L=J hints this season.

I've read a couple of fan theories and and spoilers from the books, which I don't mind discussing, so do any of you guys think we will see....

Lady Stoneheart? I read the episode title is similar to a nickname she had in the books, Mother's Mercy or something? I really hope she appears.

Maybe next season for Lady Stoneheart if we're lucky.

A lot of people have speculated she will appear because of the episode title, but D&D's episode titles are often far simpler than what they may elude to otherwise. In this case, I suspect that the title refers to the Mother aspect of The Seven. She abodies the concept of mercy among other things. Can't say anymore without spoiling some things though, so I'll leave it at that.

I have a hunch that D&D and GRRM are having issues with each other, where D&D want to beat GRRM to finishing the books, and GRRM wants to slow down the show to get the Winds of Winter out. Obviously, that's not happening. So if that's true, we know D&D know the truth behind that part of the story. They could've put it in the finale just to get it out before Martin and the books.

But who knows. I'm just making a wild assumption here.

Well, the show is pretty much caught up to the books. There's a few things still up in the air as to whether they're even going to happen in the show, but they'll probably do it next season.

Can't wait to see those reaction videos.
