If you can read every book, six days each, and watch an episode a day, I'll be impressed. You can definitely get through the first book, I did that myself when I first bought it. But I had the week off, and each book gets bigger. But I'm a slow reader.

When I read them the first time I was pretty obsessive... I had them on Audiobook for when I was driving or at work, then I just read and read at home. I think it took me three or so weeks... This was before the kid though, I don't think I could do anything near that, now. Probably three weeks for a book.

question.

is there a deluxe set of Game of Thrones books? like a matching set.

I know it might be a difficult request since the series isn't actually finished yet. but like you can find all these sweet leatherbound/slipcase versions of Tolkien and Lewis, right? stuff like this:

http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/tolkien-book-store/limited-lotr.htm

I can't really seem to find anything like that when searching for Martin books.

it's still just mass market paperbacks or simple dust jacket hardcovers.

god damn the lowest asking price is 899 dollars.

I found stuff like this on eBay finally.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/A-GAME-OF-THRONES-by-George-R-R-Martin-DELUXE-LIMITED-EDITION-Factory-Sealed-/111572845238?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fa4282b6

but it's weird. there's only nice editions of book 1.

there's doesn't seem to be any matching set that I can find. probably gotta' wait another 10 years for Martin to actually declare that the series is finished before publishers throw together some fancy collectible editions.

10 years? You're that much of an optimist? At this rate it'll be 20 years as he adds another book or 2.

Diablo: most on the ASOIAF boards have lost hope about the series being finished. Most think that the show's ending will be the only one we'll actually get. The books are still well worth a read (Jon's "Beyond the Wall" bits are far better in the books, just to name one example).

I've read those opinions (are you a member? I'm ... surprise surprise AlienTwo over there) and I don't agree. Unless GRRM dies, I believe we are going to see the end. 10 years is probably exactly where it will be, barring any additional books. Honestly, from the perspective of reading first then watching, I think I might enjoy reading after watching these last few books.... instead of being disappointed about what was left out, I can be amazed at all the added details.

Well i hope they at least die in a smart way, not just made for shock. like Oberyn's death.

i thought oberyn's death was done well.. not many tv shows can affect me the way that did. more than just the eye popping, the whole lead up to it, the feelings involved, the words said, i can still feel it all when i think about it

the whole thing yes it was good. im just talking about, the way he died, like at the end. it wasnt that smart to me. after winning the fight without getting a scratch, he makes a very dumb mistake like that, and the mountain still has his strength after getting a spear pierced through him?.. and the whole deal with the melon head scene was like out of some horror movie.

i dunno, maybe im like that because i really didnt want Oberyn to die..

I really want to see more of Dorn next season.

Prince Obe was boss.

his kingdom must be kind of pissed off now that his pretty face is busted. we've been introduced to a lot of different cultures on this show and Dorn seems really interesting. Oberyn was so impetuous, he was such an unusual and distinct person, even amongst a huge array of unique characters. I'd love to see more of his people.

You are going to get your wish. I'm curious, knowing that they are pretty much skipping all the Ironborn stuff, how important that is to the story after all? Seems like it isn't in the slightest.

apparently they are making too many changes from the original books... :(

I like to think of the show as the fictionalized version of the real life events of A Song of Ice and Fire.

the dorne location did look good in the "day in the life" thing that came out. it's nice to see the respect the show has, to be able to close a massive tourist spot for filming and also the respect shown by the crew for the actual site. can't wait for april. mmm sandsnakes

  • 2 weeks later...

I just finished reading A Dance with Indecisive Wenches last week (i tried to extend as much as i could, i hate to wait years for the next book).. Spoilers ahead i suppose:

I was kinda pissed for Stannis "offscreen" demise, i was secretly waiting him to stab someone's heart (Queen Selyse would be a nice choice) and make Lightbringer finally warm, then go f*ck all the other contenders including the Dragon Wench, and become the righteous king nobody loves BUT IS FAIR.

I really hope RR Martin has something special prepared for the Stark kids, or maybe Stannis doesnt die, or maybe little Griff does something dumb, just so Daenerys doesnt win, i dont like her, never will; she brings nothing but death and famine. Anything she tried to do, she failed at it. She failed at Mereen and she will fail at Westeros. If she even dares to put the Targaryen family on the throne every new king will be throwing a dice for the destruction of the kingdom. I dont want her to reign Westeros, not at all.

aDwD spoilers & spoilers from published chapters of WoW and speculation.

To the Stannis issue, one of the Wind of Winter chapters that was published is Theon being interrogated by Stannis, so we know he lives at least that long. And I hate to feel this way, but since there has been no casting for the show of Aegon and Connington, I feel like that shows there portion kinda fizzles out in the books. Which is a bummer because I really loved their potential. But now I think the truth lies in R+L=J and A+J=T (Aerys + Joanna = Tyrion) means that we have our three Targaryen heads of the Dragon prophesied to Dany.

Orange Juice

I'm somewhere in the early parts/middle of season three at the moment. It took forever for me to actually start watching it. I bought the first book around about this time last year and have been slowly but steadily reading them bit by bit - about mid-way through A Feast For Crows and my lord is it dull. I loved the first three books (although things seemed to slow down post-Joffrey's wedding in the third book), but this has been a slog. There's some decent new characters, but, thus far, we're not really shown too much of them and are instead given the storylines through the eyes of several characters simultaneously (specifically Kingsmoot storyline and the Dorne storyline - Areo Hotah and Arianne seemed like interesting characters but there's only been three or four chapters around that storyline in the whole book, meanwhile there's not been a peep from some of the main characters from the first few books). I'm hoping things pick up with A Dance With Dragons, because right now it's mostly about Brienne being downtrodden and tired of being called ugly (referenced at least a dozen times per chapter she's in, it seems) and Jamie really wanting to bone Cersei but, wait, he's got his duties.

Anyways, the series is good. After reading the books, it's a little annoying whenever they stray too far from the books and oversimplify things, but it's still enjoyable. I'll probably look to pick up season four soon on DVD and, once I'm done with it, check out the commentaries and special features.

Also, with regards to Martin potentially dying before he finishes the books, maybe he'll pass it on to one of his assistants? I got the World of Ice and Fire book recently, which is all about the history and lore, and, whilst I have only read a little of it, it's well-written and similar in style to the books - and written by Martin and two others.

there is a little forward at the start of "feast" that explains why it and "dance" were split like that. they essentially run along the same timeline as eachother

Ah, cheers for clearing that up. Good to know. Re-reading my above post, maybe it's a little harsh. A Feast for Crows is still decent, and still has Martin's excellent prose in it, but a lot of it seems like filler and needless expansion of the ASoIaF universe. I like the addition of Cersei as a POV character, which really runs well alongside Jaime's chapters, and I think Brienne's story and the Dornish plotline have potential but are a bit slow-going at the moment. The various Iron Islanders stories are a bit of a bore though.
