Like Orbital said, you still get the story, twists and suspense. I was just as surprised by the Red Wedding as any TV only person. I was just as much at the edge of my seat. But reading it, you don't miss anything, you get the broader picture, and you go at your own pace.

I have no regrets about reading the books first.

Same here, well I watched Seasons 1 and 2 first, but I'm glad I read all of the books before Season 3 came out on Blu-Ray, enjoyed every bit of it, and as always enjoyed it more, both are great though.

IIRC it's covered when Bronn is in the tavern drinking with the Lannister men before the Battle of the Blackwater.

Nah, Bronn just mentions learning it from "drunk Lannisters".

It's relevance is explained by Cersei to Margaery in a threatening way during Season 3, just before Tyrion and Sansa's wedding as they make their way into the Sept of Baelor.

Right after Margaery calls Cersei "sister" because of the upcoming nuptials.

I was gonna binge on the Freebies offered from XOD (Comcast Xfinity), as mentioned, but already they've removed the Season 4 opener, instead all you get for free viewing is the 1st and 2nd episodes of Season 3 and some behind the scenes stuff, which was really good, nontheless.

I feel I can't wait to catch up though, they only marginally touched on how the book and teleplay intersect. I never knew there was any book/s, so how long had you known before the HBO series about the books? I didn't do much research because I don't want spoilers actually, so I'm even avoiding them here, but obviously missed all of Season 2 thus far, and got through only half of Season 1. It sounds as though Season 4 will be the one for everyone to catch up on this series if they have ANY interest, as they claim there will be a lot wrapping up as it concludes (multiple story lines and plenty of action!)

Just talking about the previous episode (Season 4 Episode 2):

What you mean to tell me you didn't like him. Haha. I loved the way he died in this episode great acting by him not just in this episode but from the start of the series. Normally I tend to like villians even though I'm not suppose to in TV shows and films, but every decision Joffrey made up to this point really pissed me off. Shame to see that Jack Gleeson has retired from acting though.

Thought the episode was overall a bit meh (hard to compete with last week's episode) but god damn the Danaerys bit at the end was outstanding.

Yeah, seems more like it's setting up future episodes since no real major events happened. Wasn't bad, I don't think there has been or ever will be a 'bad' episode, but it wasn't special by any means because there was no real particular event that demanded our focus over the others so we're left with this big picture giving us a whole bunch of jumping points for future episodes. It was important, but nothing to really write home about, which, given the previous episode I think it's fair to give us some breathing room before the next big thing kicks off.

I think they played it perfectly, really. Last week's episode was so great that nothing they did this episode was going to really wow anyone. So they made it a set-up episode, and finished it with an awesome moment to leave a good taste in your mouth.

Exactly this episode was just there to set up for episodes further down the road. Obvioulsy like others have stated it was hard to top last weeks episode but this episode did have some good moments especially the last part with Daenerys and the part with the Wildlings. Only part that was a little dull was when Tywin was talking about wisdom etc to Tommen and even though that was the worst part of the episode it was still enjoyable.

Wasn't the Ttargaryen's army larger on the last season?

Maybe I'm confusing it with something else, but I thought she recruited more people.

I guess this is for certain. We wont get to see one of the best characters in the entire series, since they took the his best scene and gave it to Daario.

In the books, Barristan teams up with an ex-slave pit fighter from Meereen to find Daenerys. A large rotund bald eunuch with scars on his belly, named Strong Belwas. Despite his lack of testicles, he has the biggest balls this side of Pentos. He is the one Dany chooses to fight Meereen's champion. Much like the show, Belwas takes out his horse, but the fight didn't end so quickly. Belwas' signature move is to let his opponent attack first, making sure they strike his massive belly. Belwas then counters with a death blow, taking the Meereenese champion's head off. He then holds the man's head up to the people of Meereen, and then to mock their pissing in Dany's direction (such as seen in the show), Belwas doesn't piss back, but takes a sh*t in their direction, and then wipes his ass with the dead man's cloak.

I figured Strong Belwas was out of the picture since the early reveal of Barristan... in the books we had "Arstan Whitebeard" for what, 1 and 1/2 books before he revealed his true identity?

Yeah, I guess considering the fact that Dany's kind of sidelined as it is, fewer characters the better for her. With Barristan, Grey Worm, and Daario, they can divvy up Belwas material quite well.

That was a great episode. That scene with Tywin and Tommen was fantastic, and to directly follow it up with rapey incest right next to the body of their own dead child? Wow.

Yeah, the Tywin scenes were great. Both with Tommen and Oberyn. But the Tommen scene was particularly good, because you slowly begin to see Tywin's agenda in the conversation.

During the ... love... scene I was praying for some sort of break.. be it pregnant lady murder, child killing, burning alive... anything but incestuous rape-against dead incest-child. Sooooo awkward... loved it.

I know the ol' King Slayer has been deprived of his sisters sweet nectar for a while now, but honestly - did it not strike anyone as out of character? He seemed to be more of an honourable chap than one to randomly rape his sister next to his dead son/brother.

As soon as I finished typing that I really realised how f*cked up GoT is.

Yeah, that wasn't just out of character in my eyes, but straight up Character Assassination.

In the books (and even in the show) he was vocally anti-rape, for the scene here to come off so rape like, was just weird. I mean really? Personally I blame the choice to have him: (Spoilers for ASOS)

Come back before Joff died in the series, if it wasn't for that we wouldn't have had this screwed up scene most likely. Personally think it was just a bad interpetation.

Well there are some similarities to a scene or two in the books, but the situation was changed vastly as well, so yeah it's for the most part improvised.

This is motivating me even more to read the books. I think the TV Show is great and everything, but sometimes you just can't capture the depth of such a layered universe on a screen. You need elaboration. You need words. Pages and pages of glorious words!

I say do it, you won't regret it.

I actually ordered all the books off of Amazon today. I did the same with LoTR where I watched the movies first then went back and read the books.

What book are they currently up to in the TV show?

It's complex, they ended last season about 2/3rds of the way through A Storm of Swords (third book), but the different characters plot-lines are no longer synced with those in the books. Plus A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons (books 4 & 5) take place in the same time period, you just have the different characters presented separately in the separate books.

For example A Feast for Crows has chapters with Cersei, Jamie, Brienne, Sansa and Arya, but no Tyrion, Jon, or Dani...and they all have chapters in A Dance with Dragons without the previous bunch. The show will have to mix those together as no one would want to watch an entire season without Tyrion...

Well you do get a few from Feast towards the end of Dance, the majority of Dance and Feast do take place at the same time, but at the end Dance, they sync back up.

Yeah but this is sorta supposed to be Jamie's redemptive arc. In the first episode, we see him at his worst. Making what should have been a consensual (albeit twisted) encounter sorta throws a wrench in the whole thing. Jamie is pretty much damned no matter what he does, but he's one of my favorite characters. Wasn't the incest enough, GoT writers!?
