This episode was just plain old retarded. Soap opera level retarded. I can't believe that this is the same f*ckin' show. What a waste.

Is this The Guy?

I went 7 seasons with little to no complaints but man this season has just been a bust so far.

And there’s only two episodes left!!

I think this show has gone downhill since they passed the books in chronology.

I kind of feel bad for Dany, as someone who doesn't really like what they've done with her, because they keep throwing in this contrived drama with the whole is she or isn't she going *Mad Queen* or even just generally get f*cked we owe you nothing (from Sansa) when the reality is she's been a net positive so far and most of her blackspots are fairly reasonable.

Contrast with Jon, who's stumbled around making idiotic decisions one after the other (post-NW), but people unconditionally follow him and are seriously suggesting he'd be the better king (maybe in the books.. but this ain't that). It's hilariously unearned.

Just when I thought Jaime might survive this show without being entirely ruined, this episode throws that to the wind and sh*ts on him. He could off Cersei in the final two episodes as a "plot twist" but that won't salvage this mess.

I thought last week was bad.. this was very much a hold my beer moment lol

Which is essentially Seasons 6, 7, and 8.

Honestly I think Season 6 was wonderful. Jon's resurrection (in the books he could have survived or resurrected, Martin hasn't given an inkling yet), Cersei blowing up the Sept, Tommen's suicide and Cersei's usurping the throne, eliminating the Faith Militant (and killing the Septa), Sansa arranging an alliance with the Vale, the Battle of the Bastards, Arya ascending to Faceless-Man status then rejecting it and going home, Stark and Snow retaking Winterfell and the new "King Of The North"

There was enough setup from the novels to make writing for Season 6 fall in line with previous seasons.  However once they had to build off their own work - everything started to fall apart.

Visually stunning, but embarrassing writing. If only D&D knew why people watch GoT.

So Varys story arc ends terribly

Jaime and Cersei’s story arcs end terribly

Eurons story was trash since he left the iron islands so his ending kind of fell into place

I did however enjoy Clegane bowl, the tension was definitely there.

They know but don't care. Or genuinely believe they are delivering on the writing front even though they aren't.

Watching their Inside the Episode crap has me leaning toward the latter.

How much can this really be blamed on D&D though? Isn't GRRM the one who told them this is how the story was going to play out? Sure, you can absolutely blame them for pacing issues in the story, or how travel time is basically non-existent (remember when it took a month to get to King's Landing from Winterfell?). But every major plot point of the past three seasons was dictated by the man himself. I mean, yeah, in a perfect world they would have waited for Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring to release before doing these last couple of seasons, or maybe GRRM would have finished both books by now, but that's sadly not the case.

I mean season 6 was past the books was it not? I thought that was a solid season, I enjoyed it more than 5 even.

The issue isn't necessarily the broad strokes in of themselves; it's about how these play out on screen and the build up preceeding them, which is the purview of the show runners. Keep in mind that HBO also offered them more budget and episodes for this season which they turned down (because they want out and have done for a while).

( tried to slot this after the spoiler but didn't work out, so forgive the out of sorts of the remark - David Benioff wrote Troy and Wolverine Origins... so ultimately the joke is on us for expecting good writing once the play-by-play of the earlier seasons was done. lol

Dany may make a heel turn in the books. She might not. The jury's still out on that for me but the ground work is definitely there for it happening.

In the show not so much. ShowDany's portrayal has been quite different even if she's done a lot of the same things as her book counterpart; in the show she's always been portrayed (up until recently) as a massive Mary Sue. Things that were bad in the books were framed as empowerment in the show. She's been right every step of the way and the show has justified her actions. This all essentially points towards another conclusion altogether making the heel turn "surprising" but not really since it was horribly telegraphed anyway.

As an aside, it really grinds my gears that D&D are re-contextualizing scenes to justify this direction; Inside the Episode they talk about the scene where Viserys is 'crowned' and how her indifference to her brother's demise is a sign of her madness. Let's just ignore the fact that she'd suffered years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of Viserys, was little more than a means to an ends to him, and straight up threatened to cut out her unborn baby before he died. Of course she wasn't cut up about it, no one would would be.

The build up for Dany's descent into madness, if you can even call it that, essentially occurs over the course of one and a half episodes, which helps contribute to the feeling that this is basically 0-100 in no time at all. A 10 episode season might have allowed it to breathe a bit more. I also think that, at least with me, this all would have sit better if Dany flipping out resulted in burning the Red Keep down but not the whole damn city with hundreds of thousands of people in it - and if the motivation for the flipping out actually.. existed (e.g. Cersei having kept Missandei alive and then pushed her from the Red Keep for Dany to see, would be a better starting point).

King's Landing will probably also burn in the books but right now my money is still on Griff and FAegon managing to conquer King's Landing only for a greyscale outbreak to happen (thanks to the former). Cersei 100% does not make it to the end of books like she has on the show (not necessarily dead but not Queen and perched in KL).

There's also plenty of other stuff; Jaime, Jon, Arya, Greyworm and so on that I don't have the energy to address. I guess Euron too but the show's version of the character f*cking sucked so I don't really care about him.

she had to kill like, 500,000 people because if she didn't dnd would be hard pressed to rationalise murdering her in the finale, because that's how their totally healthy development works. BRAVO.

They're honestly the masters of healthy development.

Take episode 4 of this season; they rationalize that Sansa wouldn't be the woman she is now if Ramsey hadn't raped her. Did I say rape? Sorry.. I meant if she wasn't "broken in rough".. 🙃

I don't know if many people are still heavily invested in Star Wars between the prequel and sequel trilogies but that's D&D's next port of call, so they're in for a treat.

I apologize if this has been brought up before but I don't think we've seen the last of Crasters male outcasts that were changed by the Night King.  I have a feeling that at the end of the last episode we're going to see the camera pull all the way out past the wall to the Night Kings realm where we find several young White Walkers of varying age.  The infants were never killed, only changed.  They were not dead to be destroyed when the Night King was killed.

What a terrible ending to such a great show (well season 1-4 and maybe season 6 at the least).

Do HBO seriously think anyone will be interested in their spin off shows after this sh*tshow? Lol delusional morons.

I didn't mind the ending - pretty much the prophecies of all, the foreshadowing that has been going on since Season 1, have all come true.  Just in some people's minds that didn't sit well because they had a lighter or darker ending envisioned, but they got a mixture of grey.

Overall the season sucked, it was too compressed, could have expanded more on the remaining House; even had a chance to bring a couple extra in...like those unknown characters in the Final Meeting (in my mind, a Hightower was next to Tarly, a Velaryon was next to Gendry, a Reed was next to Yara, and a Manderly was next to Royce)

No One Won The Throne, but The Starks Won The Game.

For me it isn't about being "right or wrong" about the outcomes. It's about how nothing that happened really makes sense and also largely invalidates the journey that proceeded it.

Spoiler tags since episode is still fresh

Why were there so many pointless walking scenes in the first half of the episode where nothing important happened?

Why did Drogon burn the furniture and not Jon? Because the plot demanded it and f*ck what Drogon would actually do here.

Why did Drogon have so much trouble melting the Throne when he was blowing up buildings left, right and center last episode with his breath lol.

How did the Unsullied even find out who killed Dany (or that she was dead)? Did Jon tell them? Probably. But why they insist on sh*tting on his character (among many others) is beyond me.

If the Unsullied know Jon killed Dany, their beloved queen, why the f*ck didn't Grayworm kill him as soon as he confessed? Because the plot demands it and characters will act out-of-character to bend to those demands!

Everything about this f*cking joke of a Great Council.

Why does Arya have a voice here? Why does Brienne? Why does Davos - unless his lands were restored? Why does Sam have a voice here? Is he supposed to be a representative of the maesters or as Lord of Horn Hill?

Why even bother bringing back Edmure Tully from the alternate dimension you stuffed him in, only to f*cking sh*t on him like this by having the Stark girls be snarky and cut him off. He's the only actual Lord present at this council known to actually, legitimately, care for the people he rules ffs.

Why is BranBot, who didn't even f*cking serve his job as an info dump well, the right candidate for king? His story was so important and valuable for him to become king that the showrunners literally cut his character for an entire season LOL. As for being able to tell great stories, what a sh*tty requirement. A sh*tty requirement that Samwell Tarly would have better fulfillfed ffs. BranBot has done nothing and earned the biggest prize for his troubles. Kudos.

Why the f*ck is anyone listening to Tyrion's suggestion? Why are people okay with him being hand for a third time? This man's a traitor twice over and none of these Westerosi lords sans BranBot and Sansa would be okay with this.

Sansa is just all like, yo, I'm real happy for you bro, but the North is dipping. Byyyeee Felecia. If only someone had told Theresa May how easy Brexit could have been! Doesn't make sense in world that you elect a Stark King for the Seven (Six) Kingdoms and then have the traditional Stark Kingdom break away.

So the North is independent. Cool beans. But why did the other high lords not express similar sentiments?

Yara wanted independence for the Iron Islands ffs and this was a driving motivation for her - not to mention the Iron Islands have been trying to become Independent for decades (plus Yara served the Dragon Queen so... lol).

Why doesn't Dorne break away too? They're culturally alien to the rest of the Kingdoms and have zero ties to any of the players.

So it's already been established that it's straight up stupid that the Unsullied didn't gank Jon shortly after confessing. But now we get on to bartering for his release!

What is the point of actually dealing in good faith here? You can renege on any deal you make with the Unsullied the moment they've departed - they'll either never hear about it or they won't be in a position to do anything about it once they've left.

Why would you sentence Jon to the Night's Watch that doesn't even exist anymore and even if it did, doesn't have any purpose anymore because the Others are defeated? If you were planning to renege, then sure... but they didn't.. lol

What happens to the Dothraki in the new world order? Where did they go? I mean they were pronounced extinct by the show runners after the Battle of Wintefell but they and the Unsullied have managed to replicate like microbes since then so they needed a mention.Maybe they went to Naath with the Unsullied? The poor people of Missandei's homeland are in for a shock if so lol

So Jon is sentenced to the Night's Watch and he goes. But he gets there and is all like, f*ck this, I'm going North with my boi Tormund f*ck y'all. Very unlike Jon to abandon his duty but at least he finally got to pat Ghost - the animal he's bonded to on a spiritual level, never mind the show has been sh*tting on this for seasons.

Arya wants to sail west instead of any number of options that make sense ..... because.... why? And while we're here, why did Arya not use her Faceless Men training in her pursuit to assassinate anyone she planned to (NK, Cersei and Dany!).

Now we come to the small council.

Needlessly lengthy amount of time spent on Tyrion adjusting the chairs before anyone arrives.

Apparently Samwell is the Grand Maester now? When he hasn't even finished his Maester training? What about wanting to settle down with Gilly and Little Sam? Where is Gilly?

f*ck D&D's hardon for Bronn. A sellsword Lord of Highgarden, Lord Paramount of the Reach and Master of Coin? AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Zero chance that the lords and people of the Reach would be okay with this. The consolation here is that this will not happen in the books, because Bronn in the books is smart enough to consider his marriage with Lollys Stokeworth to be a blessing and not try to rise further (because it would fail in BookWorld). Also why not just f*cking kill the guy who threatened to kill the Hand of the King? lol

BranBot comes in and is all like, yo we need a Master of Whispers. Bro, your powers as the Three Eyed Crow Raven let you do that yourself. Then he's all like.. where's Drogon at? Nevermind later bois I'm going to go find him myself. Why does he even care about Drogon? He's probably chilling in the dothraki sea anyway.

And of course.. OF COURSE, the small council has talk of publicly funded brothels because this is entirely symbolic of the sort of people that D&D wanted to cater for!

What was the point of Jon's parentage in the end? Absolutely f*cking nothing. Showrunners introduced it purely to drive a wedge between Dany & Jon, so she could go off the deep end, when they could have accomplished this any number of ways without it.

The TL;DR version is the Lost & Dexter finales had a baby and this was it.

I think J.R.R. Martin gave them the last half of 6th episode verbatim, because it actually flowed, and was alright, overall, as an ending. You can like it or not, but it wasn't garbage. Equivalent of two episodes before that, though, from second half of 4th right into the ending-proper, was such an amateur work, it felt like I was watching a fan-fic. An HBO flagship show shouldn't ever feel like I'm watching a fan-fic. The season was weak overall, but that last stretch was just painful to watch.

It was pretty clear where the plot was heading for a few episodes, in terms of the major events, at least. And I can appreciate the fact that writers needed to make a pretty drastic change over just a few episodes. But there are good ways of doing it, and then there's what we got. It would have been less jarring if they put up a card saying, "And then everyone went temporarily insane," and simply skipped the fifth episode.

Which kind of brings me to a weird state. I can't really complain about ending-proper in any major, objective way, so I don't hate it overall. Just really upset with whoever wrote the garbage leading up to it. I give this finale two Battle Star Galacticas out of five. This could have been a lot worse, but it needed to be a lot better.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

I can live with the end of the show, it could have ended much much worse, at least it's better than the end of Dexter, Lost, Breaking Bad and some other shows, i didn't like any of those shows endings.

Im looking forward to the Spinoff that plays 1000 years before the mainshow.

That's the cast, well at least a part of it.
