Never heard of the books until I saw the show. I'm really enjoying it so far so may pick up the books soon. Every episode holds a little shock, so many secrets and schemes it's surprising me every week! I'm very intrigued to see the development of Daenerys after the dragon egg didn't burn her last week . I don't think I've ever loved to hate so many characters in a show! Blondie brother and sister especially. I would like to see more of the dire wolves too.

Really enjoying this as well, may pick up the books as a result. A decidedly adult take on the fantasy adventure type show so far.

Yeah, there's disappointingly little wolf in the show. The book has them in a lot more scenes, like for instance last episode when Bran was attacked by wildlings and Night's Watch deserters, he was saved by his own and Robb's direwolf before Robb and Theon could get there. I suppose training the dogs turned out harder than they thought, or something. It'll only get worse as the wolves grow according to the story, to the size of their mother seen in the first episode..

It's not that I don't like hearing curse words, it's just a bit weird to hear them said by the cast of a fantasy TV show.  We're used to all of our f*cking and potty mouth in more modern settings.

Heh, Deadwood had a similar problem back in the day. The pilot used authentic, religiously colored cursing from the late 1800s and that caused test audiences to piss themselves laughing. So Milch did a 180 and threw in as much modern cursing as he could think of. What happened then was that TV audiences felt it was unauthentic that people swore so much, and that they used modern curse words. There's just no pleasing everyone. People swear, and always have - just in different ways.

For me the latter works better. A character calling another a "marauding scalawag" lacks the impact of "f*cking motherf*cker".

Just a quick question for those of you that have read the books. Does the second book take place immediately after the end of the first book or is there a fairly big gap between them? I ask because I wonder about the possibility of Daenerys' child (Rhaego I believe?) becoming a prominent character in later seasons...

Yes the second book takes place right after the first. And as a consequence Rhaego is still a wee babe while his ma is off whooping ass in foreign lands.

Let me straighten this out, I'm not saying that I don't like it, or that I don't accept it, or that I don't think it belongs. I was just caught off guard by it. But was quickly used to it.

Low point of episode 7: Gratuitous porn. If I want porn, I'll download porn. They cut a bunch of story from the Wall to fit in this scene (that wasn't even in the book). With 'Roz' to boot, who wasn't in the book either. Some of the extra scenes they create add to the story, but this is just stupid. mad.gif There's so many characters in this story that they had no need to create more, especially not a prostitute whose sole task is to fill the HBO skin quota.

High point: Not sure frankly, I loved all the rest of it! I like Charles Dance as Lord Tywin. Nice touch to have him dress a dead stag in the same episode Robert dies and is replaced by Cersei's little incestuous devilspawn.

I like how Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke make a made-up language sound so much like an actual language. Well, they and all the rest of them. Jorah and the whip-wielding bodyguard guy rule. icon14.gif

I believe this is the hooker that plays a somewhat significant role with Tyrion later on in the series when sh*t REALLY hits the fan at the end of the second book. Could be wrong. But ya the whole lesbian scene was not totally needed beyond showing the audience what really is going on in Littlefinger's head.

No, that's Shae (from the books), and Shae has already been cast, so I can't see them replacing her with Roz. That'd be changing things merely for the sake of change, and turn the series into some kind of ultra-expensive fan fiction. monocle.gif

Sure, the scene may have been necessary to clarify who Littlefinger is, but it was too long. tounge.gif

way too long, couldn't agree more, I felt embarrassed watching it, my girlfriend was like "no wonder you were so desperate to watch this!"

f*ck that little finger, is a bastard, I cant see Ned living very long, it's a pity he was the only one with any balls sad.gif

Just looking forward to the next episode now.

Also thanks to whoever altered my initial post, good idea to make a notification regarding spoilers, I also included a little banner I made earlier in MS paint.

Ya, it was, like, super gratuitous. I don't mind some sexy times (rawr) but sweet Jesus that was like some People Vs Larry Flynt type sh*t. I did like getting a little insight into Baelish's motives and stuff, and I love the idea that he doesn't fight people - he f*cks them... tied in nicely with the end of the episode!

It's getting to the point where they're making a few differences that either I've forgotten or entirely new and I'm OK with it as I'm down with the whole GRRM being able to revisit his work thing, but I feel a little gypped in some cases because I'm remembering this differently. Like, I totally didn't think Little Finger betrayed Ned like that. Or did he? I'd have to check it out again, because I f*cking hate him for it. But then again, Ned's really not the smartest knife in the woods. In the books I felt like his threat to Cersei actually carried a little punch but it was rather pathetic here. Maybe, again, that's just because I knew what was coming up! And then Sam... maybe it was just the reading I was listening to, but Sam always came across as more timid to me then he is on the show - even in social situations. And definitely not so interested in girls!!!

This is all silly though. I love the effin' show. It's so good. If they spent a little less time on obviously gratuitous sex scenes, and explained a bit more of the lore, it'd be 110%.

Littlefinger did betray him - the last scene was straight out of the book.

OMG i guess it's been ages - I ought to go back for a refresher! Just read about it on wiki of ice and fire and I also forgot that Petyr framed Tyrion for Jon Arryn in the first place.... He's definitely the craftiest of the bunch.

I think "Little Finger" would sell his granny or screw his mother if there was something in it for him, I hope he meets his demise.

Absurdity

The pacing of this is great. A mixing of stories all of which somewhat interesting fed to me in a hey presto continuous drip, pleasing my peepers as they hurtle together to create great high budget balderdash.

I have a question for those who have read the books. DO NOT read the following spoiler if you have not read the books as it will ruin the season finale for you.

Do you really think the series will be as popular once Sean Bean's character, Ned is beheaded? He is a pretty big actor these days and the series is seriously lacking any other significant star power.

A genuine concern. Hopefully, the rest of the cast will be enough to retain the fans. The story is the big draw anyway. Those who are watching solely for Sean Bean might be the most fickle of the bunch.

You may have noticed that one character is mentioned, but not seen, in season 1; Stannis Baratheon, Robert's eldest brother. He and one of his trusted knights, Davos Seaworth, will be introduced immediately in the second season and remain important characters in the books (..seasons) to come. They have a chance with these two to cast a 'Sean Bean' and a 'Mark Addy'. We will also be introduced to the Iron Islands, Theon Greyjoy's place of birth (and birthright.. given that he's Balon Greyjoy's heir), and with them a few important Iron Islands characters. Here, they can also cast someone with a bit of charisma. Theon's axe-wielding uncle Victarion Greyjoy would be a good candidate, for instance.

Or, they might not follow the book's ending at all. It wouldn't be the first time for HBO to just borrow general story and ideas from somewhere and then make up the rest.

So, I'm caught up. Oh god I hope neither Eddard nor Littlefinger die. Gillen hasn't even gotten into gear yet! And losing Eddard is obviously not going to happen, right?

I just want to reiterate what I said earlier: if you don't like fantasy but enjoy quality television, you should still check this out. Hell, I'm waiting for the magic and dragons and white walkers to start happening. This is fantastic story-telling right here. They're juxtaposing a billion different stories and it still flows incredibly well, not feeling rushed or slow at any single moment. I'm just as interested in what Daenerys is doing as I am in Jon Snow at the wall. I want to see Prince Smugly get his head lopped off and I want to see Arya train with Mediterranean Bruce Lee. It's just a fantastic show.

Prince Smugly needs to die, though. I don't care how much he's going to move the story forward, he needs to die. In the next episode, preferably.

Just watched the first episode. I was very impressed by it, HBO seems to have a knack for making series' I just love.

I agree with Gronf, an interest in the fantasy genre doesn't seem to be a pre-requisite for liking this show. I watched the episode with my girlfriend, who's pretty vocal in her distaste for all things dragony and magical, but she loved it just as much as I did.

I've honestly not been this sucked into a show by its first episode since The Sopranos.

Loved the latest episode, some of the fights were fairly brutal and I'm really rooting against the f*cking Lanisters at this point.

This show has one of the coolest intros in recent memory as well, sort of a mix of CG and Stop Motion as far as I can tell.

Well, Tyrion gets a ticket out of the douchebasket as he is easily the most entertaining character on the show by far.

Though, on the other hand, I'm not one to advocate violence against women, but there are few things I'd like to see more than Cersei get that horrid smirk beaten brutally off her face.

certain women deserve that kind of a treatment icon14.gif

anyways I was a little disappointed by the latest episode, it was obviously just building up the tension for next episode which i'm sure is going to be out of this world, having not read the books and having no idea which way the story is going to lead, i'm looking forward to the finale.

What I said earlier about the multiple plot lines being almost equally interesting is not true, I want this show to be only about Sam and Jon Snow killing zombies. With fire. For 58 minutes per week.

Anyway, when did the male gay sex scene go down? I have no memory of that and it seems like it would be something that stands out a great deal.

It was almost directly after the Jousting scene if I remember right, it involved Renly Barathian and the Knight of Flowers.
