WHAT!?
So my computer recently had an issue where during the boot process it would hang at Verifying DMI Pool Data. It would sit there and load the little dots for over a minute then continue to boot into Windows 7. I figured it was a BIOS issue, so I try to hit DEL during my initial boot screen to go into my BIOS. I get no response what so ever by doing this. Which is odd because when the machine was first put together I could get into the BIOS with this keyboard no problem. It is however a USB keyboard. Thinking this was the issue I plugged in an old PS/2 keyboard hit DEL and what do ya know? It let me into my BIOS. Now I want to change the order in which my computer boots my various devices. My initial setting was... [1] USB-HDD [2] CD-ROM [3] HDD It was initially set up this way because I figured it would be handy to be able to boot from a USB Memory stick. However with no USB input I think my PC is actually attempting to see my USB keyboard and mouse as a boot device. Which is why it hangs so long at DMI Pool Data.... So I changed the settings. [1] HDD [2] Disabled [3] Disabled This has solved my problems. My PC now flies into Windows with out problem one. Anyway, with all this explanation out of the way my question is: Why would my PC suddenly develop problems with my USB devices out of the blue? Also has anyone else had this problem, and is there a better solution? - Thanks. PC Specs: OS - Windows 7 Pro CPU - Intel Core i7 950 Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 RAM - 12GB Patriot Viper II ‘Sector 7’ Edition 240pin DDR3 SDRAM HDD 1 - Crucial RealSSD 128GB SATA III HDD 2 - Western Digital 500GB RE4 7200 RPM Drive Keyboard - Razor Black Widow Mechanical Keyboard Mouse - Logitech G500 (Included in case this helps diagnose any issues) Also, not related to the above problem... I tend to experience odd hang ups at times in Windows Explorer. I'll often have to hit F5 to manually refresh in order to see a change I have made. Any thoughts on this would be welcome as well. Wolf68k
Does your BIOS by chance have a keyboard key you can use to choose the boot drive on start up? For example while I have my HDD as the first boot, without going into the BIOS itself I can press F11 during post and I'll get a boot menu to let me choose the drive. If you have that then don't worry about it too much and just use that. How often do you really need to boot from your USB or CD/DVD drive anyway? If you do thing it's a problem caused by your USB drive then try this. Put the boot order back the way you had it. This time unplug or turn off the USB drive(s). See what happens. Also try seeing if you get access your BIOS like before using the USB keyboard. The idea being that whole issue might be a problem with the USB drive(s) and not the BIOS or mobo itself. WHAT!? If you have that then don't worry about it too much and just use that. How often do you really need to boot from your USB or CD/DVD drive anyway? Yes. If I hit F12 I have a boot menu that allows me to choose a device to boot from. Which, just as you say basically eliminates the need for the order to be set for anything other then HDD in the BIOS. I think you may have misunderstood me. Probably my fault. When I said I originally setup my boot order it was for just in case I wanted to boot from a USB memory stick, or other device. I don't actually have any USB memory devices plugged into my PC. The only USB devices I have are my mouse and keyboard. I believe the computer is attempting to see one or both of these devices as storage devices. As I said, the USB keyboard used to allow me to go into the BIOS, now it has suddenly decided to not let me in, forcing me to use my PS/2 board. I will restore my old BIOS settings and try booting with just the PS/2 keyboard and let you know what happens. I suspect it will work fine though. I'll edit this in a few minutes. ..EDIT:: Well the USB keyboard continues to not work during boot. However after restoring my previous settings and disconnecting all USB devices I got the same problem with the long wait at the DMI Pool Data screen. So it appears I was 100% wrong about that issue. I should have done some more prodding. So now what I did was try to place anything at all in slot one and keep my HDD in slot two. Every time I do this I get the long wait at the DMI Pool Data screen. Any time I put my HDD in slot one the problem goes away. So it appears that it is my SSD causing the issue. It wants to be the first to receive attention and gets jealous of the other devices. This still leaves me with the question of why my USB keyboard has ceased to work during boot, though. Its nothing more then an annoyance, really. Its still something I'd like to find the answer to though. I have legacy support for all my USB items enabled in BIOS. Beyond that I'm not sure what more I can do... Edited May 17, 2011 by What!?
Wolf68k
That is odd about the USB keyboard. Not sure what to tell you about that. Just as strange is the SSD problem. But then like I said since you have the BIOS boot menu then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
