So what is up with Sonny Forelli?

During the cutscene in "An Old Friend", you can see Sonny Forelli picking up the phone, with in front of him a large amount of coke and money.

 

What is up with that? According to the intro movie, the Forelli's had never touched drugs. Could it be that Sonny was the one who screwed over Tommy's deal with Lance and Victor?

I may be wrong in that case, but I always thought that was the plan. To throw Tommy into the city, anger him and wait a little to let him take over the town. Sonny could know the way things are worked in Vice City, because of Giorgio, so he used Tommy and Lance to take Diaz out of the picture and take control over drug trade in VC. Sonny contacted with Cortez (he helped set up the deal as you remeber) and make sure he will point Diaz as a guy who steal coke and cash.

 

Look at Sonny in during conversation with Tommy, he isn't as angry as he should be when he lost a lot of money. Beside there is suitcase with drugs bags lying on the table next to a large amount of money.

 

Sonny knew Tommy from their childhood, so after events in harwood in 1971, he was sure that Tommy is able to take control over whole city.

That one's incorrect. It was Ken who contacted Cortez to help him set up the deal avoiding the established drug barons who will want to have a cut.

...So Sonny could easily have his cut of Tommy's action. Nice plan! This really (almost) worked out in the end.

 

I don't really think it was the case. The Forellis really never touched the drugs but Sonny himself said that times are changing and they will have to. So I think it was the drugs from another transaction, maybe onr between the Forellis and the rising Leone family.
