GTA IV Problems Help

Hey guys, I recently purchased my new computer and am having a terrible time getting it to run. Extremely frusterating, this has to be one of the worst console ports in history, but Rockstar bashing aside here are my system specs:

Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM 2.0GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (2DIMMS)

1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M

1920x1080 screen res

I have both a retail version and a Steam version and am having the same problems with both. When I try to launch the game it says I only have 56 mb of vram and it locks me to crap settings and resolution. I have tried adding command lines and I was able to change the settings but it still runs like sh*t on 1920x1080 even with lowest settings possible. I have also tried updating to 1.0.7 as well as 1.0.4 and have uninstalled and reinstalled several times now. It's also causing my brand new comp to crash which I'm not to fond of. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. This is extremely frusterating that I paid money for this game twice and can't even run it.

Thanks

My video drivers are up to date. I also played around with the NVIDIA control planel to make sure it starts GTA in high performance. And I had found a commandline that let me multiply my VRAM to make it LOOK like I had 1gb and this let me change my settings but the game still ran like crap. I tried clearing settings but that didn't work either. Thanks for the reply btw.

If I'm not mistaken, that CPU (i7-2630QM) has integrated graphics on board and it seems GTAIV fails to detect the GPU properly with this technology.

You should try using "gpucount" switch, I have suggested this to some people already, but none of them replied. Try using

-gpucount 0

or

-gpucount 1

or

-gpucount 2

You are correct about the integrated graphics. That sounds like it might work. I'll give it a shot when I get home today.

I tried adding the -gpu commandlines but whenever I do I get the seculauncher failed to load the aplication [2000] error. Any way to get around this now?

EDIT: I remade my shortcut and added the commandlines, tried all 3 but none of them worked. Still says 56mb of vram. I am adding these lines to the LaunchGTAIV.exe not the GTAIV.exe does this matter? The LaunchGTAIV.exe is the only one that seems to load the game.

Plug in your laptop and try to force the nvidia settings to run from the 460M when the laptop is plugged in.

Im pretty sure its somewhere in the nvidia control panel.

Is it not possible to disable the on-board graphics from the BIOS?

Is it not possible to disable the on-board graphics from the BIOS?

Yes, it is possible to enable/choose a video card with Switchable Graphics-as seen here:

As you can see, all you have to do is go to the Task bar, and right click on your video card icon, then go to the configure switchable graphics icon, and select the High Performance GPU setting. This is my video I made to show that it is possible and how to do it...It should be auto switchable though. As you can see from the Video, I too have 2 Video cards-one ATI and one Intel HD one. Mine is set up to use the High Performance card(the ATI one) when my PC is plugged in, and use the Intel HD one when running on Battery power(Power saving GPU). HTH

Note, you may have to click on the video to view from Youtube to tell what is going on, it is not too visible from this small post....

I have played around with the NVIDIA control panel. No luck trying to force it... And I always have my comp plugged in. No luck with disabling it in the BIOS either. But I am beginning to think this maybe be a driver problem after all. When I use the device manager to check for updates it says it's up to date. But when I go to NVIDIA's site it says I'm running version 267 and there's a 270 update. And I have triple and quadruple checked to make sure it's the right driver but when I go to install it I get an error that says that it can't find a compatible device. It's like my GTX 460 isnt even there. And if it helps I have played Starcraft 2 on medium settings, Supreme Commander 2 on high settings, CNC4 on ultra settings, and nfs world on high and all have run fine. So I do believe it's working. Seems to just be a problem with GTA recognizing it but it's odd that the driver update doesn't work either. I am downloading my steam copy of Just Cause 2 right now and I'll see how that runs (not that it would really matter but).

Btw thanks for all the help guys. Great community over here. Can't wait to get into some GTA modding!

EDIT: My computer is an Alienware M17x r3. And I'm not 100% sure if it has switchable cards. I don't believe it does. I have a I/O switch where it would normally switch it but when I press the key it says "This does not do anything." And I have all my settings at high performance in Windows 7, the Alien Command Center, as well as the NVIDIA control panel. I will be in debt if you guys can help me figure this out. Been working on it for the last 4 days or so with no luck.

I don't think this sh*t works the same as Intel HD crap, hence the problem. Like I said, you're not the first one with this issue and since more and more of these CPUs will pop up, it's safe to assume we will get more of these. I have a feeling some patch will be needed to sort this out.

This really is ridiculous. I payed money for both copies of this game, $60 for the steam version and $20 for the retail copy and I can't even run it. And its not like my computer is under spec. I have always been a proud Rockstar fan but this is crap. Absolute crap.

You should create a new txt file in your GTA IV game folder (the folder where your LaunchGTAIV.exe file is), named "commandline.txt" (without the quotes offcourse)

Then, in that file, you can put all the commands you want, but WITH the dash, and every command on a new line!

So your commandline.txt would look like this:

-gpucount 0 (or 1 or 2, try some stuff)

This command now gets loaded every single time you run the game, and it doesn't matter if you run GTAIV.exe or LaunchGTAIV.exe.

Hope this helps!

LA Noire hasn't even been announced for PC yet.

It's not such a huge drop in quality, it's more of a "we are fast to forget some things" thing.

It's also "Oh the fans are complaining that IV for PC is taking too long so we are gonna shove sh*t in their face to make them shut up" thing
