In New England, there's an epidemic called Lyme Disease, a tick borne disease. Lyme Disease mimics mental diseases if it ends up in your brain or central nervous system. Like all epidemics, like AIDS in the 80's, the world doesn't want to acknowledge its existence till 10 years after the fact. Because of Chronic Lyme, epilepsy happened. My school didn't like the seizures, so they more or less told me not to come back because they were afraid of getting sued. I called that discrimination, but I was just bitter at the time. It got worse. Short term memory loss turned in to long-term memory loss. I need reminders written on sticky notes all over the house to remind me to eat breakfast. Perhaps most relevant is the paranoia. During the summer I had this...irrational fear that I was being chased by FBI agents. It didn't help that I had been in a sticky situation with the law. Somehow, wherever I went, either cameras or FBI agents were following me. I don't know what the phobia is called, but I was terrified of pictures! And to make things worse, I had acquired some sort of minor dementia. To this day, the epidemic still persists, and I'm actually participating in a cause to prevent it. It's all useless, though. The paranoia is extremely debilitating. Hell, they thought I was schizoid for a good while. I advise everyone to immediately see a doctor when bitten by a tick! You never know what kind of harm it can do to you.

A friend of mine has Trypanophobia too. It's something I find difficult to understand. Bad experience with a needle? What else could make you be totally afraid of them? (She would scream like a maniac if we showed her something similar to a needle).

I can understand you may not like to be pinched though.

No, it's not trauma, I simply hate sharp medical tools. A sewing needle, or an icepick, I can handle. I mean, I don't hate sharp objects usually, it's just medical tools.

Syringes or dental drills... God, I'm getting chills as we speak.

I was 5, and hit my head on a railing. Mum said 6 nurses had to hold me to get a few stitches. I was simply born with it.

You are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring itself.

Quite probably, but never diagnosed with anything.

There was a test posted here a while back, I think it was this one:

Disorder | Rating

Schizoid: High

Schizotypal: Very High

Antisocial: High

Borderline: Moderate

Histrionic: High

lyme disease is often over looked by doctors too, and you can also get biten by tics passed on from your dog, I work a lot outdoors so i know all about it.

I have arachnophobia, aquaphobia (fear of deep water), blattodeaphobia (fear of cockroaches), mild scolionophobia (fear of school), mild claustrophobia and mild obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD).

Also to note my mum has post traumatic stress disorder.

Boy, no wonder you fit right in with the Algonquin Assassins.

I also have a fear of deep water. I don't like the idea of being a bath toy to any number of water-dwelling creatures.

This all the way.

Oh, and being anti-social. Sometimes I just hate people in general.

I have arachnophobia, well I don't like any insects to be honest. If I see a spider in my room (well any room) I leave the room right away and make sure someone gets it. Even then I'm still paranoid about them.

I've also got a fear of heights, if I am up high I start panicking and my hands go sweaty. I always get the feeling that I'm going to fall. I hate it.

I also hate being locked in, I once had a bad experience with bullies when I was younger, basically they locked me in a shed and was threatening to kill me. So I can't deal with being locked in anywhere.

I distrust doctors, so I've never been to one about mental problems. So I've never been diagnosed with anything. But for the longest time, since my childhood, I've wanted to kill myself, I feel worthless and misplaced. I have no interest in women or relationships, so I will never have children and am going to die alone, no matter what I do. I'm okay with that, but I'd rather not go through decades and decades of disappointment and loss before I go. I just want to end it, I always have. The only reason I don't is because I care for my family and am the sole breadwinner in my house. Plus, I fear Hell and want to see God upon my death. Suicide is a mortal sin.

I also have a thing with blood. I like bleeding into a cup, allowing it to congeal and then painting my body with it. Why would I do that? I have no f*cking clue, but one morning I find myself in a hotel room covered neck down in my own blood. It made me feel powerful, I enjoyed doing it, but I don't understand where that impulse came from.

Plus, every time I stroke our cat, I have to resist the urge to break her neck. So, yeah...

This is fine. No point slapping a name on something you already understand.

I wound up with some hormonal disorder and became asexual. After a year I came to terms with it. Or rather, distract myself at all hours so I don't have to face the situation. Either way works. Sounds similar in you. With today's technology, nothing stops you from having children and cutting out the marriage/partner aspect. It's more common than you would think.

It's a little worrying. If you happen to accidentally start bleeding and like the power of it, fine. Just don't cut. Never seen a habit so destructive.

I've felt this too. Also a power thing. It's just your mind toying with the fact that you could break its neck in an instant. The thought of controlling life and death amazes the human species. As long as you don't end up harming it or come dangerously close, I'd view it this way.

Emetophobia must suck in relation to going on mega drinking sessions. Always having to be "responsible" and sh*t so you don't have one of those hangovers the next day (or if you're really hardcore, later that night).

Also, Typhus, you never fail to entertain me. Don't take that as a slight or an insult, you're just so far removed from what I'm used to it's fascinating.

No worries, I would never cut myself. But I do bleed a lot anyway. No reason for it, certainly no medical problem and I had a lot of blood tests as a kid. I've had friends who were slef-mutilators, their arms were disgusting, just a mass of scar tissue. I cannot fathom why people would do that, but then, I guess my own actions seem slightly odd to other people too confused.gif

Yep i hate my phobia, as i always need to care to not exaggerate on the drinks...

I hate being with nausea also so i have better self-control....

I think i got it when a classmate vomited in me when i was in the second grade, this was dark brown and really scared me confused.gif

I have mild dermatillomania but I only do it when bored, and it is a very mild case. I only really do it on the ends of my fingers and I very rarely do it until I bleed, although my fingertips look badly burnt due to years of this destructive habit. I tend to do it unconsciously and it is nothing to do with nerves or anything like that because I do it at all times if I'm not writing or talking or typing. I've read material on it but I find it to be total psychobabble, and I find it hard to control as I just end up replacing the behaviour with other tics like excessive blinking.

I have severe misanthropy, I litterally have chest pains and headaches when I'm in crowds.

I have mild paranoia as well, I often feel that people are talking about me.

I also have severe claustrophobia.

Well I guess I shouldn't tell you that on average we swallow 8 spiders annually while we're sleeping. SWEET DREAMS! catspider.gif

brownbear, social anxiety != misanthropy, though I guess can sometimes occur from a severe case of anthropopobia.

I wouldn't say it's social axiety, I have plenty of friends and I have no problem talking to people, I'm a little shy but nothing weird.

I just hate people, I'm not going to go on a rant why but basically human nature disgusts to the point I can't stand being around most people.

I have ADD, if it's a class I hate like Geometry I will just barely pay attention. But if it's history/politics, or some physical kind of activity I will pay attention. I also hate ants, they creep the f*ck out of me.

Another thing is I also get social anxiety if I'm pissed off or sad, I try too hard to make people laugh or impress a girl during my mood is bad. But if my mood is good I'm all good. I also share the same feelings as the OP, I have fascination with lighting things on fire and playing with matches.

First off, I'm no doctor, and all of these are self-diagnosed from various observations and experiences. That being said...

I have mild OCD. It really only goes as far as me having to have things in a certain order, and having any little adjustment make me anxious, or me having to do things in a certain order. It doesn't interfere with my life, but it can be damn annoying when I'm in a hurry. I also have hypochondriasis. The most recent example I can think of is yesterday morning, when I woke up with a cramp in my stomach. The first thing to enter my mind was appendicitis. The cramp was gone 10 minutes later, but for those 10 minutes I really thought I was going to die. I'm also a misanthrope. While I do like certain people, most others just disgust me, and it has made me rather anti-social as well.

I don't necessarily see why arachnophobia would be irrational either. Sure maybe if you live in the UK or something where the most threatening thing you'll see is a tarantula in a pet shop, but I wouldn't blame anyone in australia or america for being scared of spiders when you've got f***ing black widows and funnel webs running around.

It's funny you should mention QI, I was watching it last night and Stephen Fry said that no one has died of a spider bite in Australia since 1981. The biggest dangers with spiders, according to him (and what better source is there than Stephen Fry?) are people getting into accidents when they see one in their car whist driving. Sounds pretty irrational to me.

Assuming this topic is now about phobias, I used to have a pretty bad fear of dogs as a child, and as I got older, it's pretty much totally gone. I still get uneasy if a big dog comes up to me on the street, but I'm 100% fine with dogs I know. I've had a not-too-crippling phobia (if I can be so liberal with the word) of certain insects - I've actually run away from cockroaches and spent days not entering rooms where I've seen one in the past, but like my other one, it's pretty under control now, I can actually bring myself to get close enough to a roach or spider to squash it rather than just blasting it with spray, running outside, slamming the door shut and hoping for the best.

I've recently developed a bit of a fear of flying. I used to the best imaginable flier, I was totally calm the whole way through every flight, I enjoyed take off and landing, and the turbulence actually rocked me to sleep on at least one occasion. Then I was on a Ryan Air (sp?) flight and one of the staff had an asthma attack (nobody told me this of course) so they started flying at full speed, making extremely sharp turns etc. and I was extremely freaked out. I didn't even realise when we were landing (the whole flight just felt like a series of sharp turns and bumps), so you can imagine what I thought when I looked out my window and saw the English country side out the window at the same level as me. This ins't a traumatic experience obviously, it just made me incredibly conscious of the fact that I'm in a big metal hull thousands of feet above the earth. Now when I take off I shake and sweat excessively, and in the slightest turbulence I figit about looking at the stewardesses to see if it's normal.

Flying with RyanAir is a completely rational fear.
