Guest
Alright how about this one, where were you when this happened? (The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami) I was 8 at the time, I was playing Texas Hold 'em with my family around the dining table when suddenly, news flash, tsunami in Indonesia, the reports that came from the following days were terrible, I clipped the newspaper articles out and stuck them in a folder I have created called "Unstable Earth" full of newspaper articles about different natural disasters around the world. Every day the death toll was rising, it was terrible and what was even more scary was that the vicar of my local church her daughter was in Indonesia at the time of the earthquake and tsunami, but she was fine she was further inland. As that was happening, I was at the beach enjoying a sunny day. After I felt terrible because people just across the ocean were experiencing a disaster. It was all over the news for a long time. Andyzoot
Where were you all when this happened? I was a Kilometre away, having a fairly pleasant time on the beach. Well that's my dice with death covered.

I was at at home and I got to see the flooding as it happened. I used to live in an apartment near the beach. My area wasn't as badly affected as some other areas in Sri Lanka though. Just some minor flooding (enough to make cars float ), but that's it.

Mr.Mister
I was staying at a buddies house and I read it on my phone at about 1am (the earthquake tsunami). Didnt see any footage until that afternoon, it was so awful. My uncle live in Tokyo and I though it hit there. well he called a little while later and told us he was now in australia with some buddies. Sucks about all that radiation on top of that Edited May 21, 2011 by Mr.Mister
RED_
I remember 9/11 the most so i'll talk about that. I was in junior school, usual school day and i had heard nothing all day. Or at least nothing worth remembering. Anyway my aunt works at the primary school that is next door and everyday i normally go back to her house with my cousins and my brother and hang out there till my dad came home from work and picked us up on the way. So anyway im at the gate heading home expect my aunts friend is with us as well. She works at the primary school next door too, shes crying a lot but i dont ask any questions. We get to my aunts house and most of us go straight to the TV and turn it on. Chuck the news on and everything becomes a lot more understandable. For the first hour or so nobody left the room, just glued to the TV as my aunts friend is crying. Then she told us (the kids) that her kids live in Manhattan and she hasn't heard from them. Of course during this hour we are all around the TV she has phone in hand and trying every few minutes. Baring in mind i live in London, thats hardly easy in the first place. International calls and all that take a while to connect, or did back then. After a while we had heard everything we were going to hear as they began repeating the same things so we left the TV on in the background and just got on with the rest of the day. Basically just checking in every so often to see if anything had changed. My aunts friend left after a while and my dad turned up to take me home. He was there for a bit also talking about what was going on. My first reaction was just amazement. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. I mean i was quite young, around 10 and i was seeing a huge plane crash into to an even bigger building. The building then proceeds to collapse in its entirety. My vocabulary was not great then since i definitely remember using the word "cool". I couldn't turn away everytime they showed the plane hit the buildings and people running from dust clouds. Absolutely amazed. To this day i still don't know if my aunts friend ever got in touch with her daughter & son and if they were ok. I think they were fine though since it was never mentioned again and i did see her a lot after that and it didn't seem like anything had happened. The 7/7 bombings was another one since it happened in my own city but i'll save that story for another day.
KilnerLUFC
So to be honest, I was too young to remember where I was, but wanted to hear from anyone living in America, preferably near/in LA, who can remember seeing this live on TV.

OchyGTA
9/11 - I was at my babysitters house watching powerpuff girls with her daughter and then the news came on and everyone was crying. I didn't know what was going on until school the next day and our teacher was talking bout it. 7/7 - I was 11 and at school and my Dad was working in London, loads of rumours that the French had bombed cos we got the olympics and that we were being invaded, got picked up by my mum who told me dad was alright, he was working near one of the tube stations in his office had to be evacuated and sh*t. Bin Ladens death - On facebook seeing loads of Bin Laden jokes then checked BBC and laughed at the c*nts death, went and played cod to shot some terrorists, 16 at the time
sivispacem
loads of rumours that the French had bombed cos we got the olympics and that we were being invaded This deserves a space in the "quotable notables" thread. Utterly classic idiocy. Lithium
OJ: I was only in kindergarten when this happened, so I don't really remember much about it. All I remember is a kid in my class saying OJ was a murderer and he'd cut your head off. 9/11: I was in grade 8 at the time. The teacher came in and told us what happened. After that, they took the whole school in to the auditorium so that we could watch it on tv to get a better understanding as to what was happening. I remember a lot of people crying...what a sad time.
OchyGTA
Where was everyone when England played Germany and Lampard's clear goal was disallowed. I was screaming at the tv whilst my mum brought in the shopping. Thought I'd lighten the mood with all of this 9/11 stuff on here
d0mm2k8
loads of rumours that the French had bombed cos we got the olympics and that we were being invaded In his defence, he didn't exactly say he thought that it was true and it was an actual rumour where I live too. People here actually thought that the French were invading London because of the Olympics and some people were chanting anti-French sh*te down my street. I swear the average IQ around here is single digit.

Utterly classic idiocy. Funny thing is, some people were sayig that exact same thing around here. I don't blame people for disliking the French. But let's give them some credit. 7/7 was nothing but a gnat-bite compared to what a trained, disciplined army could do.

Typhus
Poor old Reginald Denny. He didn't do anything wrong, poor bloke was just doing his job. But whilst some may have pointed to the attack as proof of some supposed moral deficiency in African-Americans, it's often forgot that the guy who saved Denny was himself African-American. Stereotypes are bad. The riots just seemed to be an excuse for a certain criminal element to burn sh*t and steal. It's especially laughable as Rodney King was nothing but a junkie who didn't deserve so much sympathy. He wasn't exactly some innocent martyr, was he? Icarus
The LA Riots of 1992 and the OJ Simpson slow-speed chase I don't remember because I was too young. On 9/11, I remember that pretty clearly. I was in grade eight and I was in shop class and one of my friends had to go take out the trash. After that, he came back in and he said his mom (she always waited for him in the parking lot to pick him up - shop was the last class) told him that a plane flew into the White House. Always knowing Tim exaggerated, I called bullsh*t on him. I remember getting back to homeroom and asking Mr. Doucet if anything happened today and he said yes, but that's all he would say. I got home and when I walked in, I saw my grandmother's face looking at the television; she looked absolutely horrified. I turned and the image I saw was of the North Tower collapsing - that image has been permanently fused into my brain. I just remember thinking after I saw that, "What the f*ck?" I guess these events always stick with you. My grandmother told me when they announced Kennedy's assassination, she remembered exactly what she was doing and that her mother was furious when Johnson was being sworn in because he was apparently smiling. I remember one video, may even be the one I quoted, said the good samaritan may have been one of his original attackers...though I've got a nagging feeling that I've misquoted. I think the worst attack I remember seeing was of the truck driver, who got pulled from his cab and had bricks thrown at his head from point blank range...I never know what happened to that guy though as the footage always stops after the beating...anyone know? And wasn't the police's defense that the tape only started just before the beating, and that they were originally jumped upon by King himself? And who needs an excuse for a good ol' race riot? Just look at England a few years back.
