Hello GTAF Map makers!

As you may have noticed, it has been quite some time since a GTAF competition was held. Much so a competition regarding MAPS. (since 2005)

If you are interested and willing to participate in the next GTAF MOD COMPETITION, then please vote and reply in this topic:

MOD COMP SURVEY

We are currently gauging the amount of interest and participants to warrant a competition, so your vote/participation as well as suggestions would be greatly appreciated to help kick things off. smile.gif

Please remember to reply in the topic with your name and mod area or else the vote will not count.

Any details such as: poly limit, for which GTA series, theme, and such will be provided once an actual competition starts.

Any suggestions, discussions or ideas in regards to a map competition, please keep to this topic for our future reference.

icon14.gif Sure I am, unless it is in my examns period (next two weeks). So if we're gonna do it, let it start in two weeks, I got loads of time then biggrin.gif!

I'm only going to participate if the competition is about San Andreas. Polylimits suck imo, I don't see a point in limiting it. "Can you do a vehicle under x polies" is not where a competition should be about, in my opinion.

no worries, a reasonable limit will be discussed depending on the type of competition to allow participants a fair amount of room to breathe while keeping them on their toes to be creative with smart use of polygons/triangles/texturing.

having a juggernaut of a render model will obviously trump a games-spec model, plus the possibilities of the game engine crashing and etc. may count negative towards the entry especially if the modeling makes excess use of polygons such as having 2 million polygons on a flat 2x4 foot surface.

So what a competition is all about? tell us, poly limit doesn't mean "no fun" If you think a competition should be all about fun you're right and that's what I'm for too but please stop saying bullsh*t! what's the point of doing a competition if there's no restrictions or limits? a competition should be a challenge too ...

In your case you are just finding excuses because you are using a software which is not made for modeling video games stuff, that's all it's a fact, Sketchup isn't made for video games, what would happen if R* were using Sketchup for modeling the whole SA island ? a sh*tty island that's what we'd get, games have limits and I don't see any problem in respecting limits, you just have to use the right tools and if you don't want to use the right tools then it's your problem not ours.

That's very rude of you to say. The fact that I'm working with SketchUp has nothing to do with it. If I want to, I can make lowpoly models with SketchUp, because I learned how to work decently with SketchUp when doing something that is supposed to go ingame. Most of the people that start off with SketchUp don't and you're putting me in thát group.

I think I can say that my (released) mods achieved as much popularity as mods made by people that use 3dsMax or Zmodeler so that is just one aweful statement you made there. SketchUp isn't my problem, it's my solution. There's a lot of people that can only draw lame circles etcetera with Paint, but there are a few people that are able to make beautiful, realistic drawins with it. Same thing with SketchUp: if you know how to use it well, if the programme is in the right hands, you can achieve a lot more than people would expect from such a programme. (I don't want to boast here, just supporting my reply)

You can make low poly models? great, so why are you complaining about poly limits then? I don't put you in any group I just say what I think of what's happening it's different, it's normal to deal with poly limits in a video games so why we should not in a competition? You say rude, I say just, I don't like people who find excuses just for the sake of not putting effort into it.

Also why are you talking about your popularity here? should I be afraid of you because your mods are more popular than mine? well you can dream about it, I don't really care of being popular if you put your effort in being popular you'll be popular, remember popularity doesn't mean necessarily good stuff (I don't talk about your mods, but in general).

There's a difference between good mods and good models. Talking about popularity I just wanted to explain that people like my mods, so I guess my mods are good enough to cope with mods made in 3dsMax etcetera. You'll never hear me saying that SketchUp is better programme for modeling than 3dsMax, because it just isn't designed for gamedesign. I just said that it was good enough to model models which you want convert to GTA mods, if you use the programme the right way.

About the polylimit: SA already has a polylimit (it's still unclear what it is exactly), so I don't get why we should use another polylimit that would be much lower than the polylimit of SA.
