Rockstar Pass for LA Noire 10 dollars / euro

Rockstar20124

So, next week LA Noire will finally come out. And I am getting a bit more excited for the game cool.gif But then I read the next article:

http://kotaku.com/5800629/la-noire-has-its...hat-that-is-yet

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/la-noire...ox-marketplace/

Does anyone have more information about this Rockstar Pass which is availabe at launch? Is it a code that comes free with all new copies? Like EA has done with Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2 for example. When you buy the game secondhand then you have to buy it from PSN or XBL for 10 bucks so you can download some (future) free DLC missions / levels / side characters / weapons / armor or in LA Noire's case suits with some advantages.

Or could it be all the 4 scattered pre order DLC missions / outfits in one big pack for 10 bucks? There is no online coop or multiplayer. So a pass for online gaming is out of the question.

Are there people here who work in retail and can get LA Noire early? biggrin.gif

Anyway, I am very dissapointed that Rockstar has chosen the same path as EA, Activision, THQ, Warner Bros (with Mortal Kombat recently) etc. with one time only, one user account restricted, online Passes sad.gif Could we see this bullsh*t with GTA V too? You have a brother? He has to buy an online pass too if you share your console with different user accounts. Want to lend it to a friend when you are on a holiday? You can't give him the full experience because of the DLC and online acces which is locked to your account. Give a simple online multiplayer demonstration at your nephews house? Not possible. First you have to spend 10 bucks for the online Pass suicidal.gif Very annoying angry.gif

To my knowledge you can use multiple passes on the X360, like when I bought BFBC2 my brother had the ViP codes as well, I just want to see what this fully is first though, it could just be a special DLC bundle...

I dont blame them for the "pass" thing.

Buy the game new, no problem. Give it to your mate or sell it on...

The prowned market is huge. More people are buying games second hand at half price. Soon the new market will suffer. And then the prices of games will go up. and up.

£70 for a game because everyone's buying second hand? Where do the games come from anyway? Brand new. What happens when no one buys them new?

So games companies are being forced to use the "pass" for online play. Why? Because they're not earning enough.

GTA and other games cost millions to make. What happens when they're getting thousands from sales?

I don't like it either, but its a necessary evil. Until they start doing Activation codes like Microsoft do with Windows of course. That will be the start of the end of the games industry.

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

It's not like I'm planing to wait, and buy the game (Or any other Rockstar game) used.... So why would I even care. To be honest, I kind of like the online passes, it ensure the developers get paid. As it is now, publishers and developers get no money for used game sales. It would be great if Best-buy and Gamestop would star sharing the money they make of the used game sales, but they don't seam to think so.

The funny thing is, that in the last T2 conference call. The guy speaking, made it out as the online pass was a bad thing, something EA and Activision should be embarrassed about. And that T2's solution, instead was well crafted DLC, to ensure that gamers wouldn't sell the game.

I buy "b" games second hand - games like GTA RDR, that i actively WANT, i'll buy new. Games i have a semi interest in (portal for example) I'll get preowned. Usually for these games i don't care about DLC or online play.

I rarely buy pre-owned games, more often then not, I can find them cheaper and new on some website. If it wasn't for the pre-order bonuses, I would just quit buying anything in Gamestop completely.

I have actually made money, buying games new on the internet, and then selling them used to Gamestop after I was done playing them.

There is no telling what this Rockstar Pass is yet. It may not even be the same thing as EA's online pass. Don't freak out about it until we know for sure.

That my friend is just pure win biggrin.gif

Over here it don't work that way. COD Black ops, the week after release was 45 quid new, if you trade it in you get 30 for it, if you buy it preowned you'll pay 40.

it makes no difference to me. not as if LA Noire will be multiplayer ( that would make as much sense as online multiplayer sodoku eh?? ), i don't have my xbox online, and any DLC for it i won't get until it's released on disc.

i dislike anything that requires internet access -- other than dedicated online multiplayer games, which i wouldn't play from a console anyway.

any game i consider worth buying is worth buying new. i want a shiny new hard copy, and if it's scratched, i want to be the one that scratches it.

i'm in agreement with all the comments regarding the market suffering from pre-owned sales. i know there's a big chunk of market with modded consoles that buy the game, copy it, and return it the next day - or rent and do the same thing. a big portion of them then post the games on torrent sites, further hurting sales. what else are companies supposed to do? while it's true they'll sell millions of copies of the game, they've been paying salaries for years of development without any return so far, so it's not as if the companies are ripping us off with high prices.

if i buy a used game, it's off the $10 rack and it's a game that's not available new anymore, because i want something to do for a weekend or two, not for a game i plan on putting hundreds of hours into, like fallout, GTA, or LA noire.

my guess would be the collected pre-order bonuses. it's the only explanation that really makes sense.. but i'll wait till i can get a disc, thanks.

I agree with them. If people bought a game and then want to sell it without the developer earning any money on it, they miss a lot of money.

This is disappointing coming from Rockstar.

Not at all, if you want them to keep making amazing games they have to do it.

I might just get me a 360 for LA Noire.

Rumours going around is that it's to cover the costs of hosting DLC on Xbox Live. The Pre-Order missions apparently arn't on Disc for the Xbox 360 and have to be downloaded, where as they are on disc for the PS3 version. But to keep things fair, they'll be charging PS3 owners for the "pass" which is just an unlock code, where as Xbox 360 users will actually be downloading the Mission Audio/Animations/Data etc, from Xbox Live.

That would be the case, but that's only because the PS3 has space to spare so they could put the pre-order stuff on the disc right away. Because the Xbox 360 version is already pushing 3 Discs, I guess that means they didn't have enough room to include the DLC stuff and had to put it up on Xbox Live.

I am worried about how much space LA noire's going to take up on the 360.

I'm not quite buying what you're saying though.

Users will have to pay for preorder DLC? That kinda defeats the point of it don't it? Pre order dlc is supposed to be included with the game.....

After reading the first article OP linked to, it sounds as if it's just for Xbox users... Or that it's (and this seems most likely) allowing access to ALL preorder DLC (that some people get free) for 800MSP. That would make the most sense. There's no multiplayer so it cant be for that.

There's allot of different preorder DLC that are exclusive to stores - one store will have a free case, another an extra outfit. I think it's going to unlock ALL of that, for users to download.

In other words a shameless cash in. I don't think it's "PS3 Users paying for something that's already on the disk", but more "All users paying for something that others are getting for free"

There are several different preorder bonuses but only get one free from the retailer you preorder from. All the choices are offered for sale later, so you can collect the ones you didn't get.

Paying half of what you paid for an online membership itself is a mistake, I mean how much money do video game companies think gamers have? Our job isn't playing their games.

I feel its like, you own a car out right. You go to sell it and Ford calls askin the new owner for !0% of the original sticker price. 2nd hand sales may hurt a bit but honestly its the piracy thats the real killer. At least with a 2nd hand sold game you can still make a buck off sellin the DLC for that game to a new person who just may not have the $60 at launch.

Look at the music business these days, gone are the days of sellin a million hard copies of an album. Sure you can still pirate an album, but they have gone to mainly gettin sales of albums from online stores (Napster, iTunes, ETC) and people are more incline to just go to these places and buy an album or a select few songs this way instead of stealin.

Now am I sayin that video games should go the same route? Well I dunno maybe, maybe the rumors of Micro$oft goin full digital download are geared to this exact idea that it will greatly reduce or even end video game piracy, but at least on XBL games go down in price and when you dl them they are considered new and theres no "pass" fee.

Either way I feel bad devs are gettin the short end of the stick on this but honestly if they make great dlc for these games than theyll still make a nice chunk (just look at the Dead Rising 2 dlc, one of the best sellin dlc's for the 360) and people still get to buy the game on the cheap. The economy sucks and we all cant afford to buy every game new, it sucks but thats the way it is these days.

The pre-owned market has been around since the begin years of video games. Game developers aren't going to go broke, they have just realized that people are dumb enough to buy into their lies.

There is no possible way of everybody buying pre-owned, think about it.

If they try this with the next GTA, I'm done. Seriously.

This will happen with everything eventually, there is a way to make more money and everyone will take it.

So how many copies of GTAIV were sold? 20M+? R* do not need that extra 10 bucks to enable them to make the next one as good as they can, they just simply want it.

GTA:V will probably have this, don't know exactly what it will mean, but for example, Smackdown V Raw 2011 had an online pass, needed to access all online features, and without it, certain trphies/achievements were unatainable.

I share my PS3, luckily, my brother doesn't bother too much with online, so I will probably get to use the code. But if they really cared about the fans, they should make the code redeemable to one machine, and automatically link it to the profiles on that machine - maybe limit it to 2 or 3 profiles.

i play the xbox and i just gotta say charging fans for content thats allready on the disc. after theyve allready spent like 40 quid on the disc is completely UNfair. its alsmost like punishing ps3 owners for having more disc space lol.gif

I dont think it's that.

All users will be able to buy all the DLC, as opposed to just getting one for free. the ps3 may have more disc space so the content's put on there to save space, but PS3 users will have to pay to unlock it, jst as fairly as PC/xbox users will have to pay to download it. everyone will pay - that's fair. It's not punishing PS3 users at all.

it kinda is when u realise the stuff ps3 owners pay for is allready on the disc... therefore it should be free and included on the final copy of the game. instead of destroying playstation network, anonymous should have somehow hacked it so DLC content thats allready on the disc gets given free to all lol. if i had the ps3 and i had to pay extra for stuff thats allready on the disc iv allready payed for? id consider that a very bad joke. and in my view (me being an xbox user) anything on the disc allready should be included on the final product, charging people for it is horrible.

so in other words, theyve made playstatin users pay for stuff, that xbox couldnt fit on the game.... and if xbox could have fitted it on the final product, it would be free. so in a way playstation gets punished for xbox's lack of space. and do PC users seriously have to pay for this also? PC usually gets everything for free.

Technically, you pay for a licence to use the content on that disc, and not the disc itself, when you buy a game anyway. So the disc is just a delivery method only, just like DLC. When extra content is on the disc already, you are only paying for the main content of the disc when you buy the game, and you are buying a licence to use the extra content when you buy the DLC.

I see your point.

The way i see it is that, if every console user (360, PS3 and PC) has to pay for the content, then that's fair, regardless of whether you download it, or it's on the disk or whether it comes out of a transexual chihuahua.

If it's the case of the DLC is deliberately held back, because of the 360's limitations, and was intended to be part of the game, then yes that should be free.

But that's not the case with preorder bonuses. You get them when you order the game from specific locations. Then the company will release them for a price to anyone who wants them that didn't get them, and it just happens that these are on the PS3's blue ray? Not relevant the way I see it. As jnzooger says, it's like Microsoft do with windows. You don't pay for the disc, or for windows, but the LICENSE to use it. Same concept, regardless of where the content is stored.

If the PS3 users pay for it, so must the 360 users, and vice versa.

It's not like they're giving you cars, and charging for wheels, the content under discussion here is additional - so "technically" speaking, they can charge what they want for it. You don't HAVE to use it biggrin.gif

But I get your point. In an ideal world, Microsoft would have paid for the rights for blu ray (i would happily have paid an extra 30 quid for it)and we'd all have the same, but no, they had to be stubborn tounge.gif

EDIT: A thought just occurred to me. Could R* be putting the DLC on the disc so PS3 users can still access it with PSN being down?
