The most over hyped video games

What games you think have been well acclaim to the point where it does not even deserve to be overly well received because of the lack of content, story and lack of gameplay? My pick will be black ops,the story was too short and not too good and the game game suffer from too much glitches but it still manage too sold over 20 million copies.

Half-Life 2.

Seriously, guys? The greatest FPS ever? The only thing that distinguishes it from other FPS's is the gravity gun.

And Gordon Freeman is the greatest video game character ever? A f*cking mute who's face we never see?

I'm sick of reading how Portal 2 changed gaming forever, it left me very unsatisfied.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops... extremely over hyped and very bad. It has got to be the worst Call Of Duty game I've played.

Yeah I said more or less the same thing in another forum and the only response I got was

"your tiny brain just couldn't wrap itself around the complex story and great characters."

What f-ing story? Having GLADos and Wheatley taunt you throughout the game is great humor but other than a couple of funny twists the story was practically nonexistent. Jeez the fanboys.

I have this feeling that the hype train is going to destroy Skyrim. So many people are getting so worked up over this game that no matter how good it is everyone is going to hate it because there is no living up to that much hype.

roll your eyes all you want but before Half Life 2 came along we had Doom clones and basic run and shoot games.

Now all the things you have in a FPS that you take for granted like smart AI, an actual story, And interactions outside of just shooting can be rooted back to HL2.

It may be mediocre or stupid too you but to us at the time it was groundbreaking.

Oh Jesus... It was the original Half Life that was the revolution, up to a degree, not Half Life 2.

Half Life 2 had a great story though.

I know this is all opinions, but I was very disappointed with the Mass Effect series. I had tons of friends and online reviews all saying it was the best thing since sliced bread. So I rented ME2 and didn't even play for an hour before I was dead bored. The biggest problem is the horrendous controls. I'd comment on the story, but I didn't play enough of it to really have a valid opinion.

Half Life 2 had a great story though.

Both of those games were, in their time, ahead of their time. Half Life was like nothing we've seen before, and Half Life 2 completely "set the bar" to a whole new level.

Half Life 2 was just one of those games where you had to play it back in it's day to fully understand how much of an impact it truly had. It introduced amazing physics, puzzles involving those physics, fantastic story, fantastic gameplay. Is it the best FPS ever? Nope, although many would gladly argue that. Is it ONE of the best FPS games ever? Yep. Only my opinion, of course.

It's kind of similar story for many games. Take GTAIII for example. If you played it for the first time ever recently you might go "well, this isn't anything special." because most games these days already incorporate things that GTAIII (the sandbox-y, violent masquerade) that it had and completely expanded upon it. But if you played it back when it was released. Holy sh*t, that was THE game to have. It gave us something we never saw before and completely revolutionized the gaming industry.

And a quick side observation on GTA III, anyone remember the media wankfest over how "violent" it was? In truth, it was probably one of the most violent games of it's time. But 10 years later, the content in GTAIII looks like Spongebob Squarepants in comparison to games today.

Anyway, my point: Did the people that call great games like Half Life 2 overrated only just get around to playing it now? Or did they actually play it when it was released? That will probably make a huge difference in your opinion.

As for the topic; I can't decide. I suppose your Call of Duties would obviously be up there. I never, ever got the hype with Final Fantasy games. I NEVER got into them.

The COD series has to be the most hyped over game of all time, actually FPS games in general get to much hype, not that I'm saying the genre's bad, it's just way over hyped.

I was about to type out a post that was gonna end up looking exactly like this one.

Like, to the word. icon14.gif

About FF, J-RPG is such a specific type of genre. I think the whole concept of the J-RPG is retarded, as is the setting and characters most of the time.

Bu the fact of the matter is, it works so well in Japan because its a genre really defined for them, and they really like it. Other people than Japanese people liking it is just added bonus for J-RPG developpers? They wouldnt care less if all of us disliked it.

Its actually the same thing the other way around, hand a japanese J-RPG player Fallout: NV and they will hate it to no end.

I don't see how HL2 revolutionized, more of improved on what it had.

I'm not saying it's overrated, it's just wasn't as a huge jump for me as the original was. There's just not much to FPS, point and shoot, sure HL2 had physics on top of all that which made it far more interesting, a nice getaway from the same old same old, but couldn't say that it was that much of a jump, more of a skip over a puddle.

Resistance 2, screwed up everything set up by the first game and brought in some stupid ideas, getting rid of the weapon wheel and limiting the player to 2 weapons at a time, it got quite irritating when surrounded by grims and you run of ammo and you can't get more because you are surrounded by grims on all sides.

Stuff I disliked in R2 which I would like to be changed or not included in Resistance Fall Of Man 3.

The single player campaign compared to Resistance Fall Of Man’s single player campaign its crap.

I would have liked some explanation in-game of what happened in the 2 years between when hale was picked up by the American’s after the destruction of the tower in London and when he was promoted to lieutenant to cut 2 years from the game and then offer no explanation as to what happened during those 2 years is annoying, answers as to what happened during the missing 2 years will be given in the up coming book The Gathering Storm the events of those 2 years should have been dealt with in-game.

Those tiny robotic drones an unnecessary inclusion and they’re annoying I hope they won’t be in R:FOM 3

The boring opening level and there being no sense of achievement when I killed the goliath, I would have liked to have been able to kill it myself instead of being told when to shoot the goliath by Major Blake.

Furies was it really necessary to include an invincible enemy

Get rid of first person view deaths seeing hale die in third person view (tpv) is better than the first person deaths

No health bar or med kits I hate that little red bar that replaced the yellow health bar from R:FOM

The melee button being changed from triangle to R3, I liked it better when it was triangle

Having only 2 weapons at a time to choose from bring back the weapon wheel

The pulse cannon and the kraken

Always knowing what enemy is coming next when you find a shotgun or a splicer you’ll be facing grims, crawlers, chameleons and drones, when you find a rocket launcher you’ll be facing titans and stalkers and when you find the explosive magnum you’ll be facing suicide bomber chimera, I would have preferred to not know what enemy would be coming next it would have added some tension to the game not knowing what enemy would be waiting around the next corner, if there was one thing R2 was lacking it was definitely tension.

Capelli’s useless AI when surrounded by up to 20 or more grims Capelli will insist on shooting them one at a time despite having a 300 round capacity wraith which he could have used to shoot all of the grims at once by strafing instead of shooting one grim at a time somewhat annoyingly he always shoots in a straight line plus he seems to be incapable of killing grims most of the time he’ll be shooting grims his gunfire has no effect the grims just run past him unharmed play the twin falls level and get to where hale and Capelli go through the grim nests in the 2 train tunnels to see capelli’s crap AI in action, most of the time he’ll either stand there doing nothing or hide behind a pillar occasionally leaning out from behind the pillar to shoot the grims.

(Note to insomniac a wraith is useless against grims the bellock splicer and shotgun are better weapons for fighting grims)

Not being able to sprint through water which is only ankle deep

Too many new chimera:

Ravagers

Grims

Spinners

Chameleons

Suicide bomber chimera

Marauders

And drones

Resistance Fall Of Man had plenty of chimera but it stopped short of having too many chimera Resistance 2 has more chimera than it needs. It was annoying when surrounded by up to 100 chimera of different types and not being able to kill them because of the limited weapon selection this is more apparent in multiplayer than then single player campaign

Having to wait to be revived when playing on superhuman difficulty on multiplayer in some cases I would be waiting for up to 15 minutes to be revived

Nathan Hale seems to be as weak as a kitten in R2 it takes just two bullets from an enemy to put him in near death status and one more to kill him in R:FOM he took a lot more punishment before dying.

The R2 campaign is just way too chaotic and poorly designed all the game does is throw wave after wave of enemies at you it was the same in R:FOM with one difference there would be breaks between battles in R2 there is a non-stop flow of enemies and that becomes irritating after a while.

Nathan Hale being made into a one-dimensional tough guy solider I cared more about Nathan Hale from R:FROM than I do about Nathan Hale in R2.

Less enemy variety it was mostly ravagers titans hybrids grims chameleons and drones if they had included the widowmaker, the howler, the grayjacks, the angels the slipskulls and the menials from R:FOM then there would have been more variety in the enemies enemy variety in R2 is very poor and should have been better.

The lack of pacing the first resistance was excellent in this regard, with a long meandering build-up as the mystery of the chimera was revealed and finally an epic last couple of levels to build up to a satisfying conclusion R2 had none of that R2 threw you into one situation after another at breakneck speed and R2’s second to last level was a bloody stupid swamp and the last level wasn’t that great it lacks that epic feel just go through 4 dome like structures with daedalus tearing each one apart trying to grab hale then spitting at him before flying away. The lead-up to the final boss fight was nothing more than a game of cat and mouse.

How annoyingly easy the final boss fight was just shoot the electric orb to cause damage to daedalus why couldn’t insomniac just let me shoot him.

One-sided battles hale against 3 titans made all the more harder by hale having less health that he did in R:FROM.

One of the bigger problems I had with the game was that it relied too much on cheap deaths. In R:FOM most of the deaths were the result of the game’s difficulty. In R2 the deaths were the result of irritating enemies like the chameleon which I didn’t always see coming or the furies it’s like insomniac wanted to waste the players time and force them to re-do irritating sections by putting in enemies that can kill you in one hit. Dying in R:FROM didn’t bother me as much as it does in R2 because i didn’t mind repeating the levels.

The sentinels having headset radios the game is set in the mid 1950s where did they get the headsets from does the american military in R2 have a time machine to go the future to get headset radios.

Hale speaking i liked hale a lot more when he didn’t speak.

R2’s supporting characters; the other characters in R2 are boring and one-dimensional except maybe for Warner. Capelli and Hawthorne weren’t interesting enough to be consider likeable Capelli’s in your face attitude quickly became irritating and there is nothing special about Hawthorne. At least the characters in R:FOM had some actual personality to them and some redeeming qualities. In R2 there was really no reason to remember anyone’s name as the characters are nothing special compared to R:FOM’S characters.

The story it lost the focus and atmosphere of the first game maybe for R:FOM 3 insomniac could have the surviving humans and the chimera star in a musical.

Daedalus an uninteresting character who looks almost exactly like the aliens from the movie independence day.

GTA4, need i say more.

Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. Most overrated games IMO. COD 4 was great, I will admit that, but every game from that... icon13.gif

Also, Assassins Creed 2. I will admit, it's good, but to over hyped.

But I think Madden games are extremely overhyped.. I mean who the hell buys a new Madden every f*ckin year??

I liked how on IGN I saw one of the selling points was '5 new additions to make this the best Madden yet' lmao

Then another was something about how you can play a full game in 5 minutes. Like can't you tell EA that if you have to cram a football game into 5 minutes to keep players interested.. well maybe you should actually add something new instead of changing the games brightness and contrast saying redefined graphics then slap on a new gamecase and call it a revolution in the series.

f*ck YOU EA, you're ruining gaming as we speak..

Boring missions nearly all missions are identical go here kill that person, destroy that car, retrieve that package etc only 1 mission is very different and that's the rob the bank mission.

Niko whining about how he needs money and when he get's it he does f**k all with it.

Boring gameplay, not much to do outside of missions.

Seemingly overlong missions intros, just get to the f*****g point and let me play the game if i want to know the mission givers life story which they insist on telling me i will look it up on the GTA wiki.

Dwayne and Playboy x, Dwayne is depressing and Playboy x is just annoying.

Unrealistic cops managing to survive a grenade or rocket being detonated at point blank range.

The realism which is just another word for boring, for GTA5 no realism, lots and lots of OTT gameplay which is what GTA is known for.

Any CoD game after CoD 4. I mean don't get me wrong, I enjoy them, but they're too hyped. CoD 4 was revolutionary. The others are just more of the same with little added.
