Cheat
Myanmar..? It's the proper name for Burma. Burma..? To avoid getting assraped, I - like I'm pretty sure I already made clear - don't know that much about Burma/Myanmar, matter of fact, I wasn't even sure whether it's a country. But, because kmlwin seems to be a pretty overpatriotic fella, I've seen some pictures and he's got me Googling, and it seems like a pretty beautiful place. Zyo
Burma seems like an interesting place. Very beautiful and with lots of history. I don't know a huge amount about it but I have heard a lot, as I have family who live there. I have yet to visit and hopefully after I do later this year I will have more to offer this discussion. This could be a good topic if it develops. There are a lot of political and moral subjects that could generate some interesting debate here. I generally think it is a great shame that in the grand scale of world politics so little attention is paid to the situation in Myanmar. The "election" of last year, the first in 20 years, was a landslide win for the pro Junta (Military) party. The other parties claim that there was ballot fixing, mail votes interfered with, voters were blatantly intimidated and electoral roles were incomplete, and not to forget the detention of the pro-democracy leader in 1990 who co-incidently won 81% of the government seats in the last election (also 1990). Human rights violations are a big issue in Burma too. Evidence suggests extermination of ethnic minorities is an active policy within Burma, forced labour, child labour and human trafficing is common. There are financial restrictions on humanitarian assistance and the Burmese government spends the less of its GDP on health care than any country in the world. Personally I am amazed that this is all just ignored by the international community. I do think public awareness of the situation needs to be improved. Whether or not this would bring about any change or not is anyones guess. Sanjeem
Yaw Win, I'm half Burmese myself on my father's side. He came from Rangoon and I beleive he also had some English blood in him, that's why he managed to move to Britain along with many others at the time. Some of the family stayed over there, however some of my family decided to come to Britain instead in search of work and a better life in general. At Least Aung San Suu kyi has been released, and I don't know whether the new Leader Thein Sein is any better than Than Shwe, maybe you can give me feedback on that matter. On a higher note Burma or Myanmar I think is a beatifull country in general, yes it's full of poverty and violence, but the culture looks great and the food is amazing (I know because my gran cooks it alot when I visit her here in England) and I would like to visit the country in Future, maybe when things might settle down a bit. So really you are the only true Burmese person on this forum Really I have no clue, ever since the government took control some time ago my family here in England and in Burma have pretty much been out of touch, only my cousin knows a few relatives but he doesn't want to tell me for my own safety apparently No Yaw Win is not my Burmese name haha, "Yaw" is like another way of saying "Hey" in English. I have no Burmese name, I never got one.
