cactus.
I'm constructing a playlist for my wedding at the end of this month and I'm seeking some solid recommendations that could help make the dance floor a popular place to be I'm open to whatever music you guys want to suggest, however, I'll try and set the tone and best describe what it is that me and my woman are going for, since we have quite different tastes. Type I Funky and up-beat. The kind of songs that just make you want to move. This category would include your M.Jackson classic's like Billy Jean or Wanna Be Startin' Something, but don't have to be so recognizable. 70s funk is ideal, but it doesn't have to be particularly retro, it could something as new as Jamiroquai, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or something more obscure like Miami Horror. Examples: Type II Just some happy, feel-good songs. They don't necessarily have to be energetic or the best dance songs, but the kind of tracks that people may recognize and make them smile. They can be sappy from love, it's all good. Examples: Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Beach Boys: Type III Crowd pleasers, very popular songs that may cross over with the above two categories. My lady has been complaining that too much of the playlist thus far is too obscure for her French family and friends (so far it's a lot of James Brown, Barry White, etc..) So we need songs that are instantly recognizable, and that people can singe along to. Examples: Michael Jackson, Prince, and can't think of anymore at the moment. Type IV Any typical Pop tracks and even Euro Pop, but y'know, the good kind, if it exists. I'm obliged to include such a category because a majority of the guests are French, and I'm not saying that they had bad taste in music or anything, but I think the kind of typical pop you'd in a club, café, or even on MTV would suit such guests since they are probably more used to hearing it than, say, Yarbrough & Peoples. Example: BlackEyedPeas, Katy Perry, and sh*t like that... So please, feel free to just dump all your recommendations into this thread and I'll be happy to mine through them. Thanks in advance for you help
Robinski
If a lot of your guests are going to be French, I'd recommend looking into some actual French music. I'm not big into it but I know that certain genres have quite a big domestic following. Most notable I think is hiphop, which may not exactly be wedding-friendly, but I'm sure there's going to be some decent French pop artists. Protip: make sure you get someone to tell you what the lyrics are about if you aren't a speaker. Sorry I don't actually have much to contribute. Only being 18 I haven't been to too many weddings, and I think we're in pretty different demographics anyway. Congratulations on the wedding though! Hope everything goes well. SilentSeas
I'm probably useless at this, but here's another suggestion:
Vanilla Shake
Here's one that's instantly recognizable and should be held off until everyone is completely sh*tfaced. And make sure everyone lifts their glasses/bottles/whatever the f*ck they're drinking with and does the motion back and forth during the chorus like in the video. This one should be played before that. Another good drunken sing along that everyone should know. Make sure that EVERYONE sings along to the above songs. And here are some more for the party itself that I'd recommend: TC718 / <629 / CF5
Attorney General
Some decent jams already posted. Here's some more funky stuff... and the last song of the night... A couple of them are kinda break up songs, but they'll have you and your people on the dance floor. My old man used to DJ and I grew up on this stuff. That's all just off the top of my head. Other than that, I'd say look into Diana Ross and the Supremes, Al Green, The Delfonics, Donna Summer, Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston. If you want some more, shoot me a PM and I'll do some digging. Congrats on your wedding.
cactus.
Wow, Attorney General has really killed off the first two categories with those recommendations. Not in terms of definitive tracks or anything, but you've shed light on some good classic songs that had gone under my radar, and they're helping lead me to other good sh*t. thanks! AlexGTAGamer, somehow I'd been overlooking the BeeGees this whole time..thank you. Trip, love the Dead track, although I think Shakedown St. may have more of a chance of sneaking its way into the playlist Vanilla, those are quintessential American wedding songs (like van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl)! Perfect drunken sing alongs, although I'm not sure how much a French crowd will get into them, we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for the contribution. Robinski, yeah i've been Googling more "tops hits in France" and wow, the popular music here really really sucks. It sucks hard. But every once in a while I'll find a bearable club dance song or whatever. Basically, I'm now just scouring worldwide "top hits" for songs that people will recognized and generally like. It's coming along slowly but surely. PinkFloyd, Justin Timberlake may be a massive douchebag, but the song is exactly what I'm looking for. And "c'est chic" is a great recommendation. Warlord, can't say I liked any of those songs, but I still love you. You too, Fish. Thanks for all the congrats, as well as your contributions! Please, feel free to continue dumping music in here as you see fit, the quest is certainly not over and the next two weeks I'll continue to construct the playlist. In fact, I think I'll post the final playlist in its entirety in this thread once it's finished, if anything to offer you guys a sense of closure, hah. trip
Ahhh. I was just trying to round out the sweet songs, but if you are going funky and want people to have a good time dancing. Robinski
Shameless wedding-appropriate pop/cheese dump incoming: While this is by a big pop artist it won't be that well known, 'twas only released the other day just as a promo, but I think it'd work well at a wedding reception: Edited May 13, 2011 by Robinski

Josh
Too late for a couple of suggestions? Lacking on the love song front right now. Two pretty recognisable songs all over the world. Also congratulations. I thought you were already married though, but obviously I took it out of context what you were saying in the OGA.
Toup
I'm going to give this a try, oh well, don't hate on me, I'm not so good sugesting songs as I have a very particular taste.

I thought you were already married though, but obviously I took it out of context what you were saying in the OGA. Friday evening is the cutoff time for suggestions! so you're good The UB40 song is a great one for slow dance, I'll have to add that. And as much as everyone and myself love Wonderwall, it just doesn't make for good dance music, despite its greatness. And I know my personal life is a real doozy to keep up with, but you are not mistaken. We civilly wed back in March so that's why I throw the "W" word around, but we'd planned to do the whole ceremony/party thing with friends and family at a later date (i.e. this saturday, the same f*cking night as the Champions League final = wedding planning failure)
