The Wanted Level System

the wanted level was perfect in GTA III-Vice city for me... the police was a little dumb, but it was FUN to run from them speeding trought the city. now the wanted level rise too fast, the ability to shot you inside the car is frustrating (since you can't defend yourself in any way), and they are too powerfull.

That's because Rockstar is working more towards the realistic side of gaming. In real life, if you point a gun at an officer they will immediately draw their weapon. This happens in GTA IV but the police are GTA police so two stars turns into a "shoot on sight".

Realistically:

One Star: grope's idea (they chase you with no intent to shoot you; only handcuffing you)

Two Star: Police run with weapons and will only fire if you fire at them. At this level they have their weapons out and will attempt to arrest you by pointing their guns at you (similar to how they arrest at a one star wanted level in IV). Once you pull out a gun, the police equip their weapons; once you fire at an officer, you jump to Wanted Level Three.

Three Stars: The police "shoot on sight".

Four Stars: SWAT takes over and combine both two and three together. The SWAT Team will try to arrest you at gunpoint; any restraint or signs of threat will automatically make them try to kill you.

Five Stars: FIB follow similar setup as SWAT but are more aggressive and less likely to take you in without a bullet wound.

Six Stars: You are f*cked! All out manhunt with the Army taking over. Don't think about living...unless you can get to the Pay N' Spray or out of the location before you are turned into Swiss Cheese by M4s and MP5s.

one star: cops will run after you, like how grope 4 that date described. they tackle and cuff you if they get close enough, if you get tackled by one officer you can still shake him off and resist arrest and can run off. as soon as the second cop arrives and you didnt shake the first off, you get cuffed, you're busted. if you resist your fine will increase. you'll have one star as long as cops dont know you have a gun. if you kill a big amount with bare hands/melee weapons the cops will consider you dangerous and unholster their gun (two stars)

two star: the cops somehow know you have a gun or you are considered dangerous. cops will point their gun at you and yell that you should give up. having a gun in your hands doesnt change this. if you shoot at anyone when cops see you the'll start shooting (three stars), shooting at nobody still keeps you at two. when cops point their gun at you, they'll yell "put down your gun" and more. you'll not be forced to put your hands up like in IV, but can still do everything. unequipping your gun is surrenderring, the cops will keep pointing at you while moving closer to cuff you. as long as your uncuffed you can still equip your gun again.

three star: more cops will appear and are more aggressive. there are now shotgun cops as well. cops now shoot on sight unless you havent fired for awhile or unequipped your gun.

four stars: you now shot a big amount of people and swat shows up. unless they arrive when you're already in a gunfight or you're pointing straight at them, they'll not shoot yet. they know vicious hand to hand combat for close encounters and try all kinds of tactical manoeuvres. they are very deceptive and try to get close while out of your sight and disarm you when close (if they're 1-3 metres in front of you they'll run towards you, giving you one quick chance to shoot before they disarm you.

five stars: no matter what, these guys shoot, unless you're standing still and unequipped. some of them mingle with the crowd in front of you when they're chasing you on foot and snipers arrive if a gunfight last 3 mins. snipers are located in buildings and shoot out of windows. if you try to get them, they'll have a pistol and SWAT's close encounter skills.

six stars: the army is a mix of swat and fbi, but have better tactics, and are better at close encounters

i forgot about vehicles! biggrin.gif

@Love your input tenpennyisplainevil and SGT. Johnson, it seems we have the same vision.

The first wanted level needs to change. I want to feel thrill, excitement, fear, etc. I want it to feel like Cops and Robbers, Hide and Go Seek, and Manhunt.

There was no police in GTA4. I went to the Emergency Room every time, never once got busted.

GTA5 should include the following:

• Allow players to surrender to reduce their fines.

This would include some really cool 'surrendering' animations and make the characters more realistic.

• Allow players to buy their weapons back for half their original price, like Vice City.

Being Busted should be a punishment, but not annoying.

• Bring back metal detectors, like Vice City.

Walking through it should give you a 'blue radius', meaning you have a suspicious wanted level. If you kept walking, you'd get a red wanted level. A notification would stay: Hold 'Y' to leave all your weapons.

• 90% of cars should have an alarm, and should alert witnesses.

It should be harder to steal cars in broad daylight, while stealing one at night should be easier. Thus, stealing cars becomes a strategy; not only that, but it becomes more personal!

• Cops should hadcuff all criminals during one star wanted levels, by running and tackling.

This would introduce a new style of gameplay for Grand Theft Auto: footchases!

• Fines and clearly stated notifications, telling the player of their options.

Pull over to the side of the road to get rid of a one star wanted level immediately. Fleeing the scene should give you an additional one. (not as complex as you think)

My Theory

Things feel a lot more important when you don't have them. Cars, weapons, money will all mean a lot more when you work hard towards getting them.

Could we have the option to skip the surrendering animations? Seriously, those animations took way too long in mafia II, and being able to skip them would have been nice. Also, 90% of cars? Really? I think that's kind of overdoing it. Especially considering your whole car heat idea. I mean, I guess stealing cars should be a little bit more difficult, but not impossible, and not having it punish you most of the time for doing so. I mean, why not just 50% or something? Otherwise, people will be too frustrated and afraid to steal cars, which I don't think is good for a game that's named after the crime.

just make a copy of the mafia2 wanted system and go to jailsystem..

How many times do I have to say it? I don't want to get pulled over for hit and run and speeding! And I really don't want to have to go to jail every time either.

Yeah, the police raid would be epic, for example they raid your safehouse when you're there or the place where you currently are.

Honestly, I found them too short.

I would like a feature like this though.

So, you like just sitting there and doing nothing but watching a guy pay a ticket? Why?

I hope they keep the search radius from IV. That was one of the best improvements of a long-standing formula I've seen in a game. It was one of those systems that makes me think, "Man, how did I ever survive without this in the other games?"

Other than that I have no preference. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

How about the inclusion of detectives? Say if you commit a serious crime such as killing a cop of if you get on a cop wanted list then detectives are assigned to your case. Until you get rid of them or whatever, they start searching known safe houses that you use on a regular basis or they search the areas where citizens that recognize you and call the cops. Getting rid of the detectives would mean making them 'disappear', which you would have to do in a secluded area so as not to alert people. Alternatively, you can pay your wanted bounty or do jail time when you get caught.

Yeah, I am tounge.gif

Being serious now, I'm hoping for more originality.

If a cop sees you doing something illegal or if you are fighting someone, they will try to contact the police, and describe you. You kill the police officer before he describes you, then you don't get a wanted star, but there will a yellow circle surrounding the area. This means that the police will be investigating around the area, and if a witness spots you, and tells the police, you get a wanted star.

I think that would be going a bit far. Especially since we do run over tons of pedestrians in GTA every day. I don't want to have to avoid detectives every time I play the damn game. Maybe in this game crime should be a little more difficult, but not impossible. And I do not want to spend time in jail every time I kill one cop. I might as well just do it for real if they're going to have the same consequences.

I think its genious. I came up with the same idea a couple of weeks ago. It can be like RDR bounty: sometimes there randomly appears a detective car which is tailing you (an obvious black Vapid) and you have to lead it to a secluded area to do it silently (two guys with standard handguns), or get an instant 3 stars if you get out of the car and they see you. Let's say this happens after you escape from 3-4 stars or a lot of small crimes (if you die/get busted you're clean). However, if you escape a 5-6 star wanted level or a hell of a lot of small crimes, the FIB will tail you. Everytime you enter a building, the FIB have set a perimeter around the building and say stuff like "Come out with your hands up!". If you exit with a weapon they'll shoot, but without they will slowly approach to bust you.

And what about adding a new feature: you being a fugitive. Just a special mode or missions or something. You'll have to hide, disguise, stay low, be smart. Sorry, i just watched 'The Fugitive' lol tounge.gif

It might be annoying to some, but it could definitely work with the "heat" feature. I'd like to see one of the detectives pair be based on Cole Phelps and Rusty Galloway, just as a reference to L.A. Noire. biggrin.gif

Call me crazy, but I don't think crime should be impossible IN A CRIME GAME! I mean, jesus three stars on sight? Police constantly tailing you? We play these games because we can get away with crimes in them. With this detective system in place, crime wouldn't even be profitable, so out of frustration I'd probably just end up getting a normal job and then the game would be pointless since I could just get a real job.

Edit: I mean, f*ck. Next thing you know there will be a destruction derby game that punishes you for crashing.

I don't think I was clear enough, my bad. I'm not talking about detectives coming after you for killing pedestrians or anything like that-I consider that stuff to be regular cop business i.e. the street cops. What I'm talking about is if you commit serious crimes like bank robberies (if they're available) or killing a number of cops. Getting away from the detectives wouldn't be too hard either-just like having a high wanted level really but having two specific people after you just to freshen it up. Meh, its just my thoughts on it anyway...

What method of killing cops though? Running them over or shooting them? Because I do run them over quite often. Other than that, the system sounds alright now that you've clarified it.

Since animals may be included in GTA V how about police dogs? say your hiding from the cops on a 2 star wanted level, the cops are searching for you and after a while they use sniffer dogs forcing you out of hiding.

Great idea; this idea has been floating around a lot and I definitely agree with it. I'll write something about it soon. icon14.gif

Dogs

• What wanted level should it be focus around? How frequent should they be?

• Should certain areas have attack dogs, such as places with 'No Trespassing' & 'Beware of Dog' signs?

• Should attack dogs be in missions/jobs?
