[HOWTO] Disable Avira AntiVir Popup

Recommended Posts

I didn't write this. I also have not tested each method but where noted. I also added some extra {notes}

Source: http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

Windows 2000/XP: (2000 & XP Pro do not require you to boot into safe mode)

1. Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly after you restart the computer)

2. Log in using the Administrator account

3. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe

4. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced

5. Under the Permissions tab click on SYSTEM under Permission entries:

6. Edit-> locate Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok ->apply-> yes -> ok-> ok

7. Reboot the computer into Normal Mode (start-> shutdown-> restart)

Windows XP Pro, Vista & 7 Professional/Business/Ultimate/Enterprise

1. Start-> Control Panel

2. Administrative tools-> Local security policy

3. Click on Software Restriction Policy-> Action (at the top)-> create new restriction policies

4. Right-click additional rules (on the right side)-> new path rule

5. Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\(Avira)\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\ and double-click avnotify.exe

6. Set the security level to Disallowed-> apply-> ok

{NOTE: Best and easiest method to use}

Windows Vista & 7 Home Premium

- Method 1

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe

2. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security tab->

3. Under the group or username SYSTEM click edit

4. Put a checkmark under the DENY column for "read and execute"

{NOTE: The problem with this method is that when the exe gets updated the settings are reset forcing you to have to reset the deny setting again}

- Method 2 (in case Method 1 causes you to reboot after each update)

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe

2. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security tab-> advanced

3. Under the permissions tab highlight SYSTEM-> edit-> locate Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok -> ok-> yes-> ok-> ok

{NOTE: Tested on Win7 and the best method and works permanently for Home edition. I also did the same to the avnotify.dll just to be on the safe side. And unlike the XP version of this method, no need to boot into Safe Mode.}

*Note: Avira changed the path in version 9 & 10 to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop

.: Disable the splash screen :.

1. Open regedit and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

2. In the right pane double-click avgnt and add /nosplash at the end of the path (ex. /min /nosplash).

*Note: Avira changed /nosplash to /ns for version 9.

{NOTE:

Using Vista & 7 64bit the file location is in \Program Files (x86)\

Registry path is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I haven't tested the /nosplash or /ns on version 10 as of yet since I hardly ever shut down or restart it's not an issue for me.}

Good guide. I have Avira and while I don't get mithered by pop-ups, my brother does. Does disabling the pop-up itself have any negative effect on the protection offered?

None at all. The popup that's being disabled is only the display to get you to buy the Pro version

We have Avira at work and this pop up bothers me SO MUCH. I'm right in the middle of my concentrated CAD work and BOOM, this sh*tty pop-up appears. If this wasn't my work's computer, I'd punch the hell out of it.

THANK YOU for spreading this awesome tutorial!

Personally I've always just set the auto update to 20 days, then manually updated long before it got that far. That way I'm always getting the popup exactly when I expect it, and I'm never interrupted in the middle of something.

Still, good on you for posting this. icon14.gif

I know other people seem to be quite annoyed at the popups, especially if they leave the settings so that they get it once a day. This should completely solve that problem for them. smile.gif
