It is the question that has divided the forum, some want realism as seen in the last instalment but some want the return of SA's ridiculous game-play. Hopefully we will be able to see what the majority of the GTA fans want but please explain the reason for which option you choose. Also, add ideas if you can see a balance of fun and realism.

This is my first poll so I might have messed it up...

The poll is rather useless because you've failed to operationalize "realistic." Simply saying "san-andreas style gameplay" is quite vague. Please elaborate on what you mean by the term 'realistic.'

Sure no worries. I meant to say would you prefer the return of SA style game-play such as jet packs and the character customisation or GTA IV's gritty realism as we have seen in the last game. Even the cheats to the last game were realistic (to an extent) no flying cars and such.

Also, would you like Rockstar to elaborate on realism or return to SA's ridiculous game play?

Didn't vote, because I want to see something of both games.

Would you care to explain the middle ground?

I voted for unrealistic.

I like it more when the games have more stuff in them for the player to have fun. I don't think the game should revolve completely around the character and have to cut features simply because that character wouldn't find use of such a feature. Like how it wouldn't make sense for Niko to want to storm around town in a monster truck, so they kept that out of the game.

More seriousness, more realism doesn't always necessarily mean more fun, and when it comes to a game I prefer to have more fun, so I'd prefer a more unrealistic approach instead of more realistic.

I mean real life is dull enough as it is, why bring more of that into a game you're playing to have fun?

I think you've got things (badly) mixed up here. Realism in GTA IV = physics, graphics, car handling, character animations etc. It's not about leaving out all the goofy stuff.

You should of put more choices. I want it to be realistic to a certain degree, but not to the point where all the fun has been sucked out.

Decision like that was probably made in order to preserve the urban big city feel of Liberty City though, and personally I'm glad they made it. Every GTA since III has had a general feel to them (except San Andreas, which had a lot of different feel's going back and fourth throughout the game), and the feel of a GTA is what defines it after all.

Well you can still have stadium events like in the other GTA games and still maintain that big urban city feel. Have a monster truck rally, races, and dirt bike tracks in those, I don't see how something like that would be out of question.

Keep it realistic, but bring back a few 'goofy' things and implement them into the game.

Car and clothing customazation: That can be pretty realistic

Jetpacks: Not so much. They can go

Flamethrowers and mini-guns: Yeah, i could've seen those fitting in IV without a problem.

Planes: If the map is large enough, sure why not.

Gambling: Again, might be realistic enough to work biggrin.gif

I vote for TBOGT/SA over the top missions. When i'm playing GTA I would like to keep it as far away from reality as possible, which is what I think most games these days have forgotten they should be focusing on since a realistic approach rarely equates to a fun experience.

realistic gameplay, storyline, characters, map, etc.

over the top unrealistic missions

some unrealistic vehicles would be fun

It's called a "video game" for a reason, forget realism.

Give us a catoon world like Toy Story and I'm in this thing!

I voted "Realistic". Specifically I tend to favor the GTA 4 (and DLC) approach to realism as far as story and character development goes. As far a weapons go, I would like to see more weapons but a more realistic depiction of them. For starters I would love to see a fire mode selector for assault rifles and SMGs and have automatic weapons shoot like automatic weapons. The rate of fire on the AK-47 and the M4/HK-416 were way off.

It would be nice to have realistic gore such as having a 30 mm machine gun shooting people to pieces.

The only other element of realism I would like to see implemented is vehicle destruction. Explosions only ever seem to render a car/truck/etc. a burning shell of a wreck. I would like to see explosions big and powerful enough to blow a car literally to pieces. Armored vehicles are another issue. In SA, an Abrams Tank (the Rhino) could be destroyed by small arms fire. In TBOGT The APC was the most vulnerable from the back and could still be taken out by repeated small fire focused it's weak spot. Both of those are totally incorrect ways of dispatching an armored vehicle.

Miniguns should only be vehicle mounted.

And NO JETPACKS!!

gta-the-best

realistic: ( or close) car physics, player physics, crash physics, movement, realistic storyline would be better, realistic graphics

Unrealistic: means of transport ( like being able to use jet packs, jets, commercial plane etc...), customization, missions, health, cheats, etc...

Im not voting in this badly made poll because i want the game to be a mixture of both.

I like realism where it's appropriate to the type of game.

IMO the GTA series has always had traces of realism including SA with certain elements like working out, getting haircuts, tattoos, gain/losing weight etc.

I remember when I first got GTA III, and thinking how realistic it was compared to other games at the time, because most of the games I owned were based off fantasy.

What I've always found appealing with the GTA series is the very fact there are a lot of things based off real life. Most of the stuff we do in GTA although is not likely to occur isn't entirely impossible. Jetpacks are real, miniguns are, planes (obviously), and the list goes on.

With GTA IV I feel R* wanted to try, and make a GTA that's more logical, and makes you think more than making it entirely realistic. There's no question as far as the environment goes it feels the most life like. Every time I play GTA IV it really does feel as I'm in a real life city on my TV.

The core of GTA IV is a lot more refined, but the basic principle is no more realistic than its predecessors. Niko can carry a rocket launcher around, and peds can walk by him without as much as 2nd look.

If it was truly realistic peds would panic, and any cop in the immediate vicinity would shoot him on sight which brings up another point. If it was actually realistic a gun shot to the chest would put Niko down, and most likely kill him instantly.

Although GTA IV is slightly more grounded I wouldn't really say it's a realistic game, but for GTA V I would prefer if R* went the GTA IV approach with the story, but for general gameplay sprinkle the stuff we all come to love. This stuff actually exists in real life.

I wonder why people keep considering/saying gta 4 was "realistic."(maybe a little pseudo-realistic, but even that's an overstatement in my opinion.)

I'd like to see a number of features,(the amount seen in gta sa as an ex.) implemented in a "realistic"(pseudo-realistic) fashion, instead of being fed a bad line of coke about haircuts, tattoos, hitting the gym, gang wars, or whatever other "feature" from previous gtas not being "realistic" and not having an application in the "real world," thus having no place in "realistic" gta4.(you know cause I was unaware people got haircuts and such in the "real world.")

I'd prefer a mix of the two. Realistic story and characters, over the top gameplay.

And for all of the comments about jetpacks being unrealistic, would it really be a bad thing if one was given to the player as a reward for something like 100% completion and wasn't involved with the story at all?

I prefer the realism of GTA IV. I enjoyed the realistic weapons (even though I would like to see more more weapons in the next GTA.) I enjoyed the car chases. Unlike GTA III where the tank comes and chases you. The realism can get annoying sometimes I really had fun with it.

I think having realistic fun would be great but not as fun as unrealistic. I really enjoyed the previous GTA games and I liked GTA IV but I would much rather play SA than GTA IV. I can't wait to see how GTA V will turn out!

If it's realistic, I'd prefer it to be totally realistic, including as realistic graphics as possible and everything else in the atmosphere, otherwise it feels like a rip off like a certain game we all know.

I want realistic graphics, car handling, animations, everything that GTA IV had. So yes, realism is a must. They can still add a lot of fun things.

More ballad of gay tony type missions.

Planes

Swat tank

Quad bikes

Motorbikes with side cars

Car customization

Sky diving.

New ideas that haven't been done. Rockstar has imagination.

I voted realistic, but the question is more complicated than that. It is just a matter of how you see GTA.

I see it as an "action film where you're the hero". I loved that feeling in IV. A lot of missions were crazy but still not too much. Some missions would make credible scenes for action movies. And what is the point of creating a realistic setting such as a parody of an existing city and fill it with over-the-top situations? A completely fictional setting would fiT more in my opinion.

But it shouldn't be totally realistic neither. I wouldn't want to wait a couple of minutes before Roman's cab show up when I call. And I wouldn't want cops to chase me when I go through a red light or drive too fast (pissed me off in Mafia though I loved the game).

I think The Lost And Damned had the perfect balance between realism and crazyness. IV was maybe a little too realistic, but still very enjoyable.

Agree with you completely about TLAD having the balance right mission wise.

TBOGT should basically be the blueprint for V.

I absolutely adored the base jumping missions, mission checkpoints!!!, the shotgun with exploding shells, Yusif Amir, THE APC/TANK THINGY! etc etc. The best aspect of TBOGT was the mission completion screen at the end of each mission, that would make re-playability so much better. R* need to bring all of those to the table in V.

Id chose realistic cause it will be much more fun like the car handling (yes i know that there is a mod for that) and crashes.

Will also be more cool if R* adds a realistic gun sound.

Also, would you like Rockstar to elaborate on realism or return to SA's ridiculous game play?

I think a mesh between the two would make for the most fun formula.

For the record, I think a lot of things in San Andreas were actually realistic. Working out to improve your physical attributes (i.e. stamina, speed, power)? Greater variation of clothing? Improving your respective "skills" for firearms and driving? All very realistic features to me, despite the fact that you could immediately go from a bald head to having a large pink afro. We're talking about a game where you can kill +30 police officers, get arrested, and then be back on the streets within minutes. There is always going to be a compromise between reality and fantasy in such a video game as GTA.

As for jet-packs, the Hydra airplane, and stuff like that, hell yes I want to see them return because they were indescribably fun. I am a massive fan of GTA IV but I was indeed bummed out when I learned that all those fun things I'd become accustomed to in the III-era were gone: swords, chainsaws, planes, golf carts, car customization, etc. Sometimes its the simple things in life (and in GTA) that bring such joy. And I don't think driving around the city in a golf cart armed with a chainsaw is any less realistic than hijacking a heavy-duty helicopter from an airport and terrorizing the city (as seen in IV).

The most realistic aspect for me in GTA IV was RAGE and the applied physics to driving, gravity, etc. Obviously RAGE isn't going anywhere, and we can reasonably expect more improvements regarding said aspects, but I think if you combine this with all the little things that made the III-era games such a joy, then that is a formula for one epic GTA game, and I use the word "epic" with full respect to its meaning.

As for cheats, well I personally can't complain about them. They are cheats after all sly.gif

Mister Pink

I have to agree with TheCacti.

I want the game to LOOK realistic like IV but have over-the-top gameplay. I want to be almost tricked in to believing that something like stealing a jetback was feasible in a realistic envoirnment.

Thing about Saints Row is that it just looks unrealistic and that puts me off. Rockstar got the realistic envoirnment down to a tee. The way people get knocked down the way cars handle etc. I just think it kind of looks stupid if you are going around with green skin and an afro or something.

This is just me but even playing San Andreas, I tried to keep CJ looking somewhat believable and not too OTT so as to not ruin the story for me. Otherwise I'd be looking looking at CJ going "oh no...what sort og gangster goes around looking like that!?"

So, I want the game to look and play realistically with over-the-top action and gameplay that's convincing me that it could happen. A good example of that is a film like the Terminator. It's crazy that such a story could happen but the way it's presented to me it's realistic. That's what I want and I thought San Andreas was kind of good at that already.
