Spaghetti on a train

NEW YORK (AP) -- The city's subway riders can handle panhandlers, rats and tuneless street musicians. But eating spaghetti in a crowded subway car? Well, that's just going too far.

An Internet video that shows New Yorkers brawling over a passenger's right to nosh noodles on the subway has ignited a debate about what people should and shouldn't do in the nation's largest mass transit system.

The video, posted online anonymously, picks up mid-argument, as a woman twirls onto her fork spaghetti from a takeout container and a passenger across the aisle chides her.

"What kind of animals eat on the train like that?" says the woman across the aisle.

The diner snaps back with an epithet, and the exchange quickly degenerates into a fistfight.

"Chill out!" shouts a man as he tries to pull apart the two combatants.

The video has touched a nerve in a stressed-out city where the commutes are difficult and no perceived slight goes undocumented, thanks to cellphone video cameras.

On Internet sites, hundreds of viewers of the spaghetti skirmish debated the smell and the spilling of subterranean snackers. One YouTube contributor mixed video of the fight with scenes from the violent 1983 Al Pacino crime drama "Scarface."

Some New York commuters called for a subway system ban on food, like the ones enforced in Washington, San Francisco and other cities. The Port Authority Trans-Hudson trains, which run between New York and New Jersey, already prohibit eating.

"I think it's nasty when people eat," said Sam Ramos, as he rode a 5 train to the Bronx. "They should go somewhere else."

But at the other end of the car, John Augustine dug into a cup of chili and said people should mind their own business.

"People will fight about all kinds of things," Augustine said. "Are we going to legislate against every one of them?"

Littering, playing loud music and smoking are prohibited in the subway system. On Wednesday, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city's subway and bus system, said police have bigger problems to deal with than patrolling the trains for chowhounds.

"We all have a responsibility to treat our subway system and our fellow riders with respect," chairman Jay Walder said. "This is a system that carries 5 million people a day, and I'm not sure that a ban on food is really practical or enforceable."

MTA board member Andrew Albert said such a rule would cut into food sales at newsstands, which pay rent to the agency. But another board member, Doreen Frasca, suggested the MTA should impose the rule on the Manhattan Second Avenue line, which is under construction, as a pilot program.

Some riders recently have taken enforcing subway etiquette into their own hands. Last year, artist Jason Shelowitz posted dozens of official-looking signs in stations warning commuters not to clip their nails on the subway.

"The sound is incredibly annoying and the nail bits go flying all over the place," the signs said.

"Also, keep your finger out of your nose," another sign said.

A Brooklyn graphic designer, Elizabeth Carey Smith, kept track of how many times fellow commuters offered her a seat on eight subway lines while she was pregnant. She posted a series of pie charts with the results online earlier this month. The G train, which connects Brooklyn and Queens, was the worst; the 1 and 6, linking Manhattan and the Bronx, and the A, running through Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, were the best.

Some riders say the underground dining is just part of New York, where a dose of weirdness comes free with every $2.50 subway fare.

During a 15-minute ride on the 6 train this week, a passenger could see: a man descending a stairway while baaing like a sheep, a pair of old men belting out "Papa was a Rolling Stone" at triple its normal speed and a woman in a huge, fur-lined parka hissing at two large rats on a platform.

Until smartphones invaded New York, such sights could only be enjoyed by locals or in the Metropolitan Diary feature in Monday's New York Times, where readers send in anecdotes about the city. But now the oddness is online for all to see.

In recent months, amateur videographers have recorded a rat scampering up the leg of a sleeping passenger, a shoving match between a passenger and a belligerent saxophonist and a commuter train barreling along an elevated track in Harlem with one of its doors stuck open.

Some riders wondered if the spaghetti scuffle was staged. Most have seen much worse violators of etiquette than the noodle-nosher in the video, said subway rider Shash Lachhman.

"I once saw somebody eating barbecued chicken with no napkins," Lachhman said. "But I still don't think you need a rule against it."

I've got to tell you, I see very little discussion-material here.

There is no eating or drinking on our public transit system, yet everyone does it. Aside from it making me hungry, it really doesn't bother me, unless someone is eating fish. Then the smell just kills me.

We used to have a great ,old lady, trolley driver(I'm guessing she retired) that used to make an announcement if someone was eating. She would just explain that there is no eating, but she won't do anything about it if they don't leave a mess behind. I miss her - she also used to remind us to check the kids halloween candy during halloween. She was great for PSAs.

Yeah as long as the smell isn't too crazy and they don't leave a mess I wouldn't really care. But if they leave a mess it would go against a littering rule if they had one.

Though, there isn't much in the way of mass transportation around here for me to worry about.

I'm surprised nobody just told them both to shut the f*ck up. People ging to work or whatever they're doing doing don't want sh*t like this before their day has begun.

Why would eating on a bus bother anyone? That's just crazy. People here can eat pretty much anywhere they want. And I like it like that.

Of all the things you could eat on a train, she chooses spaghetti? Really? To each their own, I guess.

I can understand why it might bother someone to see someone else eating on a train, but I really don't think it's anything to start a fight over.

Both sides are clearly at fault; The woman for simply not minding her own bussiness and being blatantly rude about it instead of stating her dissapreciation of someone eating, or perhaps even moving away. The other woman is also at fault for having such a rash reaction, but she probably saw it also as a racial attack, which it may have been looking at the nature of the white womans words and attitude.

Therefore i am more in favour of the dark woman, because she has understandable reasoning to be angry, just went far too overboard...

Spaghetti is messy business. I'd get angry if she were spilling her sauce everywhere, but similarly I'd be impressed if she was able to consume it without making a mess.

Didn't see the video so meh.

If i was eating on a train and somebody had a problem with it then i'd politely ask them to mind their own business, i doubt it would be an issue around here though considering some piss heads drink ale on the train.

What?

I eat on public transport often, I mean, when I'm downtown with the homies and we don't want to sit down we can go to McDonald's and hop up into the subway, the bus, train, trolley, whatever, eat and ain't nobody saying a thang.

Not saying we're a bunch of greasy fatsos who spend their days eating on public transport, but, you know, sometimes we eat on public transport and we don't get a single mean mug.

Then again, I don't live in the U.S, but still.

That is pretty damn ridiculous. It's just food.

Word.

The best thing to do is not get involved. It ain't worth getting stabbed with a fork over a freakin' bowl of Spaghetti's or anything else for that matter. Just let them eat their damn food, most of them eat on the train because by the time they get to their destination usually their workplace, they don't have time to get something to eat. So it's like killing 2 birds with one stone.

There's only one problem I have with eating on trains. (busses, trams, etc.)

And that is the smell. Apart from that i'm cool.

There are more important things to worry about. Like, if that guy is going to follow me off the train and stab me.

That's the bigger worry I have.

I disagree. I mean, the rule of "no eating on the bus/tram/train/etc" exists for a reason. Because people will eventually spill sh*t and then the passengers are the ones who have to put up with someone else's mess that they've created, and ultimately left behind.

It's a shame when you see a perfectly good seat going to waste because some dipsh*t spilled their Pepsi on it, or it's littered with cookie crumbs, or in this case, someone has spilt marinara sauce on it. Not to mention how dirty the floor can become due to all the crumbs, wrappers, coke cans that get tossed on public transport.

When you buy a ticket for public transport you are paying for a service, and part of said service is offering a reasonably clean environment. Hence why MTA authorities and others kindly ask passengers to not eat while riding; a simple request that benefits everyone in the long run and should be respected, even by people who happen to be in a rush. Hey, sometimes we're all in a rush, running late, etc. Doesn't give us the right to just do what we please wherever we want.

Frankly, I don't mind if someone is having a nibble or whatever because they just can't wait to get their snack on. I've been there before and I'll reserve judgment. But when you waltz into the metro to enjoy your box of spaghetti during over the course of your trip, you are being downright obnoxious and blatantly ignoring courteous rules set forth by the MTA.

However, I agree as a passenger it's best to stay out of the situation. The people at the Information and ticketing booths(i.e. the employees) should take the liberty to enforce the rules if they spot someone clearly bringing foot (to be eaten) onto the subway.

The smell isn't so bad for me. Half the people riding public transport smell worse than the food.

This is ridiculous, I mean, food? What's so disgusting about food, even tho' it's eaten in a subway how come is that disgusting to someone?

Although the girl made a mistake in her behavior too, I mean she was all "I can haz spag8i in subwei, u mad?", not saying that the other lady's response was any nicer. The only person who behaved righteously was the man who stepped up to cut it off.

The only thing I'm really taking away from this is that you can get take-away pasta in NYC. That's f*cking awesome, and is a gap in the market that really needs to be filled in Newcastle.

I'd be obese within weeks.

Trust me you can get anything as a take away over in NYC. And most of it actually tastes really good.

@Topic. That's crazy about a fight starting over someone eating. Maybe she wasn't making a good attempt at eating it so the person starting a fight got jealous over the fact someone had a meal on the train? f*ck knows. Just sounds like they got jealous because they didn't think of it first.

Blasphemy! Noodles are nowhere near as good as pasta/spaghetti. Noodle places are pretty common here actually.
