Gareth Alan Willmer
Capcom Confirms Resident Evil: Raccoon City Capcom's latest Resident Evil game is going to be a tactical shooter made by the studio behind Sony's latest SOCOM titles. Capcom's got a lot of Resident Evil games in the oven right now, including a couple of HD remakes and some new 3DS titles. Now, however, it turns out that there are even plans for a new Resident Evil title that will be developed by Slant Six Games, the studio behind the latest SOCOM games. The most surprising news, though, is that the game sounds like it's going to be much more of a run-and-gun event than previous entries in the series have been. The game is going to be set during the events of Resident Evil 2 and will allow up to four players to work for one of three factions. The big reveal was that players could work for Umbrella, sweeping through Raccoon City as part of a security team that's been charged with hiding evidence of the T-Virus outbreak (this means killing a lot of zombies and, presumably, using survivors as human shields). Aside from the Umbrella team, players will be able to as part of a US Special Ops team, and there will be an option to play as a "bio-organic weapon monster" created by Umbrella, too. Capcom has revealed the following information about the Umbrella security team: The Umbrella team is made up of four new characters: Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre, and the game will play out slightly differently depending on who you choose. Various familiar faces are due to pop up along the way, including Leon Kennedy. You'll earn XP as you progress, which allows you to earn new abilities, such as Vector's cloaking skill, and weapons. The other factions have yet to really be detailed, but the game certainly sounds like it'll be a blast. The game is apparently going to be released sometime this Fall for both the PS3 and the 360. Expect more details next month when Capcom holds its annual Captivate event. If we could play as Leon or Claire in some DLC for it then that would be perfect. Could fill in some Resident Evil 2 gaps

Tha Lunatic 510
Here's a blog I read today about RE: Operation Raccoon City.. I'm just wondering what you take on it.. do you agree with him? If I Go Back To Raccoon City, I Go AloneRaccoon City So Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a go and we have both a teaser trailer and the promise of a demo at E3. And while I may not have my finger on the pulse of the horror nation, I get the feeling that some fans are none too happy with this new "squad-based shooter" approach. And neither am I. From a personal standpoint, I just see this as another step in the "twitch" direction, and a way of assimilating the shooter craze that currently grips the industry. I sense a faster pace, I sense more gore rather than nicely designed fear, and I sense exactly what I consider to be a mainstream concession. Japanese developers have been trying for years to cater to the Western audiences and thus far, their only plan involves making games faster and dumber. I've played every RE iteration and I think anyone will tell you that part of the fear we experience came from being alone. It's part of the reason why Silent Hill, or any fear-based entertainment product that features a lone individual, is so damn creepy. It's just one person against God knows what; I say "God knows what" because what scrapes and thuds in the dark is always ten times more frightening than the reality. It's how the human imagination works, and something the true masters of terror well understood. By bringing in a "squad," you immediately remove that crucial aspect; the part of our brain that harps on the inherent fear of being alone. Plus, based on the teaser trailer, it's not a difficult leap to surmise that action, not growing tension and anxiety, will be the name of the game. That might turn out well, but it just ain't as scary. I'm sorry. This announcement has, however, increased one fear that resides within me: the fear that at some point, every single game available will be all about speed and reflexes, and the faster something is, the "better" it will be perceived to be. ...at which point, I'll be done with gaming. ...okay, that's a small exaggeration, I admit. So do you guys agree that making it a co-op takes away from the fear and quality the game can have?
deathdealer
I agree with that blogger 100% Capcom has lost sight with it's fanbase and is now catering to the CoD crowd with this game. There was no fear in RE5 because of co-op, just frustration that it's not a true surivial horror game. This announcement has, however, increased one fear that resides within me: the fear that at some point, every single game available will be all about speed and reflexes, and the faster something is, the "better" it will be perceived to be. ...at which point, I'll be done with gaming. yeah, those are my thoughts in a nutshell. Creed Bratton
That's what I've been saying all along. Resident Evil is not Resident Evil if it isn't a survival horror. These new RE games are just body snatching parasites that wear the name and the face of Resident Evil but the soul is gone.
MrcTOtheJ
I agree with that bloger 100%, to many Japanese games are being tailored to suit the western need to make things go BOOM, I mean I like a nice explosion and gun fight, but I need other things. And I particularly agree with the being alone thing being one of the key sources of fear in old RE.
KilnerLUFC
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City takes place during the events of Resident Evil 2, and is set in Raccoon City, a dreary mountain town whose inhabitants have been turned into zombies. The cause the transformation is an outbreak of the T-Virus, a biological weapon that was secretly under development by the Umbrella Corporation. Umbrella has dispatched the USS (Umbrella Security Service) to get rid of all evidence of Umbrella's illegal development of the T-Virus, including killing all survivors. Sent to stop the USS is a Special Ops team sent by the U.S. government, tasked with saving survivors and stopping the USS from destroying the evidence of the calamity. Not sure if this is 'new' or not, but it just popped up on my FB. New trailer out, with no Gameplay, but shows some of the story. I can't embed the video, so the link is Here! Outcast
I never was a big fan of the survival horror genre that RE pioneered but the RE universe which capcom has created does appeal to me, and I suppose this game is aimed at players such as I and not to the traditional survival horror fans I for one am excited to see how the game turns out

ccrogers15
This is not resident evil, its a 3rd person call of duty zombies. Bring us the REAL resident evil. Resident evil 4 and 5 are crap and not scary, and people say 4 is very scary. how? Its not. Wow a overweight ogre is chasing you. The only people scared of an ogre is 3 year olds. RE6 better be back to its roots.
GTA-King
Totally agree with you ccrogers15. The newer RE's are nothing like they were back in the day. The only reason I'm intersted in this one is because it's a backstory to RE2 and 3. Apparently you can change the course of RE history too. Plus I've always wanted to play as the bad guys, and this one allows just that!
Don Garcia
Have no interest in playing the game, but that CGI mini-movie trailer was pretty f*cking slick.

They are always vague like this, making it obvious that you don't have a clue what you're talking about. You have this tendency of taking a popular opinion and passing it as your own without knowing anything about the actual topic. If you don't have a real opinion don't say anything. But it's so obvious that you didn't play any of the old-school Resident Evil games. Or any of the other games where you take the similar position. I'm not saying that what you posted is wrong, because it isn't. But it's so obvious that it's not your actual opinion because you lack actual experience to have one. Anyways, its not really a backstory. its a "what if" type of game. You get to simulate what it would be like to kill the main people. This game is a joke. I hope slant 6 goes under after this, serves them right for plumeting the series even further toward disaster. And you know what? Not offering LAN play to go with the online as well, will you know how RE outbreak went. Once the servers go down, its done. End of story. RE outbreak was perfect online, had flaws, but was great and was a TRUE resident evil. This game is just a 3rd person call of duty zombies. Stupid capcom letting a crap developer make a RE game. Thats like rockstar letting nintendo make a GTA. GTA:Mario land. BY the way to the retard above me, GTAvanja, i own all the resident evil games besides gaiden on GBC. So what now? And ive beat them all, and beat RE2 the most times. So YOU dont say things you dont know. Age means nothing. Dont try to make others look like s*it cause you have insecurities about your fat flabby body. Your acting like your calling me a troll, when your the one trolling. And i do know what im talking about. I was giving an opinion. WOW just cause its called "resident evil" dont mean its a resident evil game. Put the name "grand theft auto" on a sims game. So gtavania, im gonna ignore your retardedness for now. Thanks and have a great day! Edited January 11, 2012 by ccrogers15

Tchuck
This change does raise an interesting point though. RE is leaving the ranks of survival horror to become just another shooter. Who will take it's place? Isn't there any other studio producing a game similar to the resident evil of old? Surely an Indie studio could come up with something great and fulfill the hole in the resident evil fanbase's hearts.

E.A.B.
Capcom has really been sh*tting on its older franchises as of late Well, not really. Street Fighter was fine. But that costume crap was creeping into the game, and they mishandled UMVSC3, and SFXT has that DLC crap in full force. They're trying to make ammends for that though by releasing all 12 characters for 20 bucks. I dunno how to feel about them anymore. They have some franchises I love, but they're also being plagued by sh*tty business moves that don't appease their actual fanbase. Game isn't RE and is a sh*tty RE game, btw
Alick
Well it just got 4.0 from IGN, other reviews have given it between 6 and 8. I thought it looked good, so will still give it a rent, but I won't be bashing it because it's not a 'true' RE game, don't think it ever was intended to be that. Gtaghost22
WORST GAME IN THE SERIES!!!!! Here is what makes this game sh*tty: 1- Story mode is 5-6 hours long! Resident Evil 4&5 are 2-3 times longer . 2- Easy as hell.. Easiest game in the series . 3- No Horror elements at all, LittleBigPlanet is more scarier . 4- The ending doesn't make any f*cking sense . 5- Graphics are sh*t for a game released in 2012, cut-scenes looks good though . 6- multiplayer is boring and full of 13-15 years old kids . 7- this game should be named Resident Evil : call of sh*tty (3rd person view edition) . 8- Dont pay full price for this game.. Its not worth it, rent it and wait for RE6 instead (hopefully its better) Edited March 20, 2012 by Gtaghost22
xHIGHWAY_REAPERx
MY views on the game: - If you pre-ordered it like I did, I'd suggest turning it into store credit, and buy the game when it drops in price. I pre-ordered the game, finished it returned for store credit, however being the RE fan I am I'll re-purchase the game when it's price drops. - Definitely a game worth playing if you an RE fan, although VERY different for the series adds a little bit more a back story to the franchise and does it nicely. - I'd suggest only renting it unless you have the cash to spare or find it cheap. - The game itself isn't what I'd consider an Resident Evil game, more of a spin-off that ties to the direct Resident Evil Story. My personal rating on the game: 7.5/10 But I suggest you try it out for yourself!
Menaced
I was about to buy this game full price until I read some of the reviews. IGN isn't bullsh*tting, it really does look like a poor man's SOCOM from what I've seen of the gameplay. The gunplay and graphics look almost exactly the same. I think I'll just spare the money for Resident Evil 6.
