Capcom Confirms Resident Evil: Raccoon City

Capcom's latest Resident Evil game is going to be a tactical shooter made by the studio behind Sony's latest SOCOM titles.

Capcom's got a lot of Resident Evil games in the oven right now, including a couple of HD remakes and some new 3DS titles. Now, however, it turns out that there are even plans for a new Resident Evil title that will be developed by Slant Six Games, the studio behind the latest SOCOM games. The most surprising news, though, is that the game sounds like it's going to be much more of a run-and-gun event than previous entries in the series have been.

The game is going to be set during the events of Resident Evil 2 and will allow up to four players to work for one of three factions. The big reveal was that players could work for Umbrella, sweeping through Raccoon City as part of a security team that's been charged with hiding evidence of the T-Virus outbreak (this means killing a lot of zombies and, presumably, using survivors as human shields). Aside from the Umbrella team, players will be able to as part of a US Special Ops team, and there will be an option to play as a "bio-organic weapon monster" created by Umbrella, too.

Capcom has revealed the following information about the Umbrella security team:

The Umbrella team is made up of four new characters: Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre, and the game will play out slightly differently depending on who you choose. Various familiar faces are due to pop up along the way, including Leon Kennedy.

You'll earn XP as you progress, which allows you to earn new abilities, such as Vector's cloaking skill, and weapons.

The other factions have yet to really be detailed, but the game certainly sounds like it'll be a blast. The game is apparently going to be released sometime this Fall for both the PS3 and the 360. Expect more details next month when Capcom holds its annual Captivate event.

I just came across more info... these grabbed my attention the most

-The game will be coming to PS3 and 360 this fall.

-Zombies in the game can sense you in three different manners: sight, sound, and smell.

-The gameplay is described as “dirty”, and the series will feel much darker than it has up to this point.

-The game will take you through a number of familiar areas if you’re a Resident Evil junkie who remembers your journey to Raccoon City. (yes.. I was junkie)

-Operation Raccoon City, depending on how you play the game, will give you the option to “change the history of Resident Evil”. Not only will you have the chance to meet and interact with various characters from the series, but you’ll even have the opportunity to kill them.

-”This is not a one-versus-one game where you’ve got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you. If you’ve ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, ‘I’d wish I had a big gun’, that’s what this game is. It’s not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away.”

-One of the pictures in the article showcases a zombie being used as a “meatshield”.

Definitely got me interested at the point that you get to play as Umbrella aswell, seeing it from the other side for once.

Resident Evil is a funny ol' franchise to me, because it only worked as the jerky first installment it once was. Watching the camera shift awkwardly between Jill and Barry in the dining room as you ran flatly around corners made the game what it was for me. This is probably why I detested the first person direction (Survivor I think it was called) and never touched it again. That's why I'm wary of new directions. That being said, from what I've read I like the sound of a darker atmosphere and the fact you're left with little ammunition. I'll keep my eye on it.

I have mixed thoughts about this. I'll wait to see some gameplay before I get excited for this game.

Isn't it the other way round? Instead of being left with little ammunition, they want to give you big guns and lots of bullets?

That's what's making me apprehensive. I love the old RE games. 4 was fun, but started getting further away from what they were all about for me. 5, while again fun, was basically a completely different game. I've no doubt this will probably be 'fun' too, but I'm scared they're turning it into something that might be a bit too arcadey. The whole point of the horror and suspense comes from having little ammo... how can it be a 'darker atmosphere' if they take that aspect away?

I worry this might just be something they're using to cash in on the success of things like Left 4 Dead and the bloody 'zombies' game on COD.

Capcom is run by morons. Resident Evil made it's name as a survival horror game. That's why people loved it. What they are planning with this now is just another zombie shooter. Like we don't have enough of those already. They ripped the soul of Resident Evil with Resident Evil 5 and quite frankly they started the process with 4, but at least 4 was good. And now they're beating that ripped soul with a mainstream genre.

I f*cking hate being a PC gamer sometimes.

Then I look at my resolution; 1920x1080. Feels good man.

I agree. One thing is seeing game after game milking a set formula...

... the other thing is seeing what was once a trailblazing game being shoved through a Play-Doh extruder.

Hopefully, they can pull out a decent game. The premise is not that bad. Even though it takes place in RE2, the storyline can be good, perhaps even fleshed out a bit more.

Hmm to be honest, I'm half and half on how the game play is gonna be, I honestly was one of the few that liked RE:4 & 5's game play (wasn't to fond of the first game play style, mainly liked the story and the premise, but I was not a big fan of the over all packaging, but that's My opinion though sometimes, the first game could scare ya, which is what was missing form 4&5) now that dosen't mean this can't be good, but honestly, I'm gonna be weary of this until I se some game play.

It has potential, and playing a story while working for umbrella sounds fun to.

Honestly I say capcom is better of, bringing back the survival/horror fell of the first games, with the game play mechanics of 4&5. (if it is possible)

Who needs new exciting games when I have GRAFIX

I can't imagine being such a shallow gamer, clinging onto graphics and living in blissful ignorance.

I'll being enjoying everything gaming has to offer, instead of funneling myself into fanboyism. Feels great man.

As much as this sounds good, this is not Resident Evil as we know it now, i know they are making RE6 as well as this, but i got a feeling this won't have much success.

The return of Raccoon City, t-virus infected zombies and Umbrella created BOW's make this more Resident Evil than Resident Evil 4 and 5 are. So f*ck yeah I'm waiting for this!

I mean, sure it's boring to keep on the same tracks and not change the style, but the problem is that RE4 and RE5 changed to the wrong direction...

Cool sh*t man. This is something I'd play at the end of work days and zone out into a little horror world. I loved RE2 era of the games, so definitely cool.

the game is missing one thing that thing is ALBERT WESKER

well we don't know that for sure.. Capcom and Slant Six released only some information of the game saying that we could change Resident Evil history by killing S.T.A.R.S members but they didn't say who all would be in the game... this game is gonna take place in '98 and Wesker was the leader of S.T.A.R.S then, which is also during the Resident Evil 2 and 3 era and he wasn't in either of those games since he was most likely in the middle of transitioning from S.T.A.R.S to Umbrella so he may be in the game but then again, I would understand if he isn't

a few more details surfaced about the game... the highlighted got me excited

A wealth of information has come to light regarding Capcom’s upcoming Resident Evil offering, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. The recently announced title will bring a new style of gameplay to the survival-horror series, made possible by the involvement of Slant Six Games studio, who worked on the SOCOM titles Confrontation, Fireteam Bravo 3, and Tactical Strike. While some Operation Raccoon City details have already been revealed, now even more have come to light.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is looking like it will adopt third-person shooter mechanics, like taking cover behind objects or human (or in this case, zombie) shields, and possibly giving players the option of moving AND shooting at the same time.

Fans of Resident Evil 2 and 3 will also be happy to know that ORC will be paying the respects owed to those games by including the sense of horror that made those titles so good. In fact, Resident Evil 2 is the prime inspiration for Operation Raccoon City. As a result of using RE2 as a base, figures like Mr. X will be shown in  Raccoon City before he was dispatched to pursue Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield.

There will be two opposing forces fighting each other throughout the game: Umbrella’s Security Service agents and the United States Spec Ops forces. The former will be in charge of purging the entire city of any evidence implicating Umbrella, essentially any/all zombies and survivors. The latter will be in charge of protecting civilians and any other persons of interest. Of course, zombies and Bio Organic Weapons (like Tyrant or Nemesis) will also be a factor for both factions to contend with.

To spice up the game a bit more, Raccoon City will allow players to change the historical outlay of the Resident Evil franchise, namely by eliminating Leon Kennedy (if you play the Umbrella faction). Should they be successful in their mission, that would shake up the entirety of the Resident Evil mythos, though there has yet to be any official word if Raccoon City will be part of the series’ canon.

Zombies, as much as they are going to be an obstacle, can also be used as a tool in Operation Raccoon City. If they just so happen to be between you and a charging Hunter or Licker (both enemies will be making a return), they can take the brunt of the damage and give you time to dive out of the way. Zombies can also be bypassed using the stealth approach staple of shooting out lights.

Details are still mum about the overall story of the game and any multiplayer modes. Perhaps ORC multiplayer could be akin to what was featured in Resident Evil 5: a team deathmatch game in which killing zombies, as well as enemy players, grants points.

I'm sorry but this sh*t is not survial horror, it's a modified l4d/nazi zombies game.

Face it, the Resident Evil we all know and love is dead. thanks capcom, you killed another franchise.

But being a survival horror is how I define a resident evil game, Resident Evil isn't suppost to be a shooter like RE5 or this game. If this went by another name then it would look promising but using the RE name like this.....total bullsh*t.

Edit: I just watched the teaser and it does look promising but then again it's a teaser so the jury is still out with this one.

That news was nice to see, and the teaser looks promising, though like deathdealer said, it's a teaser, so it still can go ethier way at this point. Still gonna be keeping an eye on this.
