Criminal Ratings - Guide to how it works

NOTE: Since this is about a feature already in game, but which brought me many questions that I could only answer through the use of mods, I am not sure if I should post this in modding or gameplay, however since the subject is not about a mod itself, I decided nonetheless to post here. If this is not the right place, feel free to move it.

This is the result of a long series of research, both on finished games and new, freshly restarted games.

Many questions came to my mind concerning those points you see in the Stats menu, essentially: how do you earn more points, what is the complete list of ranks, and how does the point earning system work?

Searching on the internet only gave me the obvious answers, like "shoot down aircraft = 30 points", and most of the time the lists of ranks I found were not correct or even lacking ranks at all.

So I did it, I did my own research, on par with a Touhou GTA related project of mine of renaming all ranks to Touhou-related stuff - namely because if I want to get those new ranks, I had to know their names.

1. The complete, unadulterated, checked and double checked list of ranks

This is the most complete, 0% errors and double checked list of ranks, confirmed and re-confirmed to be the one good.

NOTE: I have also posted the list of ranks on Grand Theft Wiki (my name over here is Tempest, which is my true nickname - the one I bear on GTAF is old, so call me Tempest please.)

2. Complete list of stats used by the game to score points

This took me a while. Reading forums, playing and playing the game, tricking, fiddling and modifying my game save thanks to Ryosuke's Save game editor, very handy to mod stats and see what happens in the game. Finally, I got them all nailed down.

I believe this system also works in all the other, if not most of the other III era games, but I can't tell for sure, due to me only owning GTA SA for PC, and PS2 versions not being moddable.

* Game progress - For every increment of 0.1% = 1 point (100% completion is worth 1,000 points.)

* For each increment of $5000 = 1 point (Maximum amount of $999,999,999 is worth 199,999 points.)

* For every 1% of accuracy = 5 (Your accuracy is: Bullets that hit/Bullets fired. A 100% accuracy is worth 500 points. After doing missions heavy in gunfire, like Just Business, this might explain sudden rises of the criminal ranking.)

* Getting Busted or Wasted = -3 points each time

* Using a cheat = -10 points for each one

* For every legitimate kill = 1 point each after passing a checkpoint

> This is linked to the statistics "People killed since last checkpoint" and "Total legitimate kills" (in Stats > Crimes) instead of increasing immediately the rating, going to what the game defines to be a "checkpoint" (Finishing a mission, going to a Pay 'n' Spray, or saving the game) is required to trigger the criminality point increase (and thus your total legitimate kills), with the amount of points obtained depends on the amount of kills this stat gives (for an example, 5 kills on the said statistic will increase by 5 points the rating after going to the Pay'n'spray). Once the point increase has been applied, the game counts this action as a "checkpoint", resetting the stat "Number of people killed since last checkpoint", increasing the "Total legitimate kills" stat by the value obtained before attaining the checkpoint.

> Running over pedestrians, i.e. ramming down someone with a car, will not be counted as a "legitimate kill", although increasing by 1 your "People you've wasted" stat, which is your true total kill count throughout the game.

> Being killed, arrested will reset your "People killed since last checkpoint" stat to 0, thus all kills you've made before dying will not be registered as "legitimate kills".

> Going to a TransFenders is not a checkpoint.

* Destroying aircrafts = +30 outright, without the need to pass a checkpoint

That's it! There is, I'm pretty sure, absolutely everything is explained concerning Criminal Ratings. This is also on Grand Theft Wiki, where I posted everything concerning this due to the existence of a page talking about them, but now, I thought it'd be a good idea to share with GTAF.

If you would please read. I already did search, but I believe no one before posted the entire scoring mechanics. None of the links are talking about how the precision is linked to scoring, or how legitimate kills are counted, not the actual "people you've killed" stat.

I know already all this but I believe my thread is a little more clear and better built, since it fully explains how the criminal rating calculations work. I have never found all this on the internet before and trust me, I did search.

The most comprehensive breakdown of stats that I know of is the Stats FAQ by Bamspeedy: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/924362-grand-th...reas/faqs/47686

Also I seem to recall that there are some differences between the PS2 and PC versions.

Thanks for this. I had doubts about the amount of shots fired before the accuracy thing kicks up, since I tested it with 200, and I just read it starts at 101.

You did a great job! Many lists here and elsewhere on the internet aren't nearly as comprehensive. I'm glad people like you take their time and continue working on understanding such a complex game. Keep up the good work. icon14.gif

Girishb posted the link to show that DarkHedge - aka Tempest - did most of the work on the GTA Wikia. Therefore he copied and pasted his own work that he deserves a lot of credit for.

Never bothered getting The King score. Its painfully difficult to get it.

Here are some methods and explains the system too.
