WhistleBlower
When I say that GTA IV is overrated that doesn't mean the game in question is a bad one. It just doesn't deserve all of the perfect scores it recieved. Especially when 10/10s and 5/5s are met with "ground-breaking" and "revolutionary". I honestly believe that the game deserves a 7/10 and here's why... The pros of GTA IV: + The newest and up-to-date representation of Liberty City in this GTA title feels more like a living, breathing world due to the fact that you've got your NPCs conversing with one another and doing simple tasks like cleaning store windows. + The graphics for this multiplatform title look great for its time (2008). + There are some nice little additions like being able to watch television and laugh at your depressing, narcassistic and cynical protagonist stumble drunkenly out of the local bar. + Being able to store and bring up cheats on your phone. The cons of GTA IV: - While the graphics look great for its time, it doesn't help that there's this annoying blur-like mask covering the screen (most prominent on those sunny days). Especially in an age where games running on HDTVs are supposed to look crystal-clear. Thankfully, we didn't have this problem in Red Dead Redemption. - There is a certain lack of fun gameplay to be found in GTA IV and that's probably because the developers at Rockstar decided to tackle a more realistic gameplay experience (because it's realistic for the FBI to tackle a one-man army instead of the military, right?) Then again, dark, gritty, and realistic seems to be the trend for videogames in this generation. - Apparently, you have to PAY to get all of the fun stuff the developers omitted from GTA IV and put into the episodic DLC content. Great job making me feel like a sucker, Rockstar... - No real reward after you complete the story. - Lazlow isn't funny and the jokes are just terrible. Discuss, please. sonnyBlack
I agree that the focus on realism did remove a bit of the fun and replay value older GTA games had to offer. That was why GTA 4, despite still being a great game, isn't my number 1 on the list. The story was great, but afterwords there just wasn't a lot to do that I found fun. Brucie's races were about the most fun thing for me after I finished the story, but there wasn't much more that interested me other than going on rampages. However with a lack of a riot cheat, peds have weapons cheat, and peds attack you cheat, it was just me against the cops and whatever gang members I can provoke, which was still fun, but not as fun as it was in the other games that had 'fun cheats'. But after seeing some of the crazy gameplay return with TBOGT, and even the addition of some fun cheats like explosive sniper bullets and explosive punches and some more fun vehicle cheats, I think R* realized the more over the top gameplay was missed and won't focus as much on realism as they did in GTA 4. Of course that's just speculation, but it's certainly plausible imo.

Great job making me feel like a sucker, Rockstar... How is this R*'s fault? Atleast they didn't charge us $10 for a couple of online maps, and a couple of new weapons like most DLC tend to be made up of, and who says it was omitted from GTA IV? R* had DLC planned along side GTA IV before it had even been released. It wasn't R* being seedy assholes saying "We'll make sure these pricks don't get this stuff straight away". It was never planned for GTA IV. Most developers wouldn't even give half the stuff R* put in TLAD, and TBOGT. Vercetti27
I agree about the lack of reward . There wasn't really any fun to be had outside of the missions as well . Lazlow was really unfunny too. He was so much better in VC and SA.
Bowserchomp
You forgot the awesome physics engine which is really fun to exploit. And don't you think it's a little bit too late to discuss the "pros and cons" of this game. I mean, it came out 3-4 years ago! No one cares about that crap anymore! No, they charge you 20 dollars per episodic content, making you pay a total of 100 dollars when you factor in the initial 60 dollar price-tag for GTA IV. The fact that they purposefully chose to charge you extra for the fun gameplay that should have been included from the start is annoying as hell. And most developers would give half the stuff Rockstar offered in their games -- anyone who actually played non-Rockstar games for once would know that. Are you implying the only games I play are made by R*? I'm just not understanding your point. If you felt like a sucker for something you weren't even forced to partake in, that's your loss my friend. You know what? GTA V is likely to have DLC too. If people are willing to pay for it developers will give it to them. I'm always on the XBL marketplace, and the Playstation Store looking at the different kinds of DLC packs most games have, and sometimes I think they are major rip off. Some are good value, but most are a rip. EFLC fits into the good value category. The thing I've never understood about DLC is the way people stamp their feet for days/months on end insisting how badly they're being hard done by yet they'll STILL purchase it. There's no logic. Okay, my point is that you shouldn't have to pay extra money for fun gameplay. Especially when other developers often do it without the use of DLC/episodic content. And where are you getting the idea that the same people who complain about this stuff go on to purchase the extra content? Well I'm going to go out on a limb, and say even without the DLC the gameplay in GTA IV is still fun, and obviously I can't name specific people, but before the DLC came out a lot complained about having to pay for it. I am willing to bet that most did go onto buy it simply because of curiosity. I do kind of understand that paying for extra stuff is a bit rich, but unfortunately that's way this generations tends to operate. As I said developers will give this stuff if people want it bad enough. Free, or not. Edited March 21, 2011 by Miamivicecity

Because is a real DLC not like let say "Dragon Age" where they cut some locations that were supposed to be in the game just to released it later. The game was planned from the very beginning to include those 2 DLCs. I dont like to see Niko driving cars with Nitro or having fun in clubs - is not him. You're accusing the wrong game here... GTA IV complete edition deserves those 100 $ but now you can buy it much cheaper...

In saying that something I do find kind of annoying in regards to DLC is when developers release "Game Of The Year" editions. I just bought the GOTY version of Borderlands on PS3 for $38 AUD brand new. It comes with all 4 DLC packs, but I was looking on the PSN store, and it works out a lot cheaper to buy the GOTY edition. I'd be pissed if I spent $10, or however much it is on each DLC only to find out the game would be released later on with the 4 packs included for free. I'm still expecting to see RDR + Undead Nightmare, and the other DLC packs included in a bundle like the complete edition of GTA IV. Linki
Fun is subjective, it can't be used as a legitimate argument to denounce an entire game. "Fun" is probably the most subjective feeling a gamer can experience. Can someone honestly describe what fun gameplay actually is that everyone on the face of the planet will agree on? The answer is it's impossible. It depends on what YOU the player prefer. I think the gameplay in GTA IV is fine. To me there's more to gameplay then the features that are included. That part is false, as seen here, IV is $19.96, not $60 like you said, it even says regular/was $26.54, then it says $19.96, and the EFLC is $29.96 in-store(thanks to Wal-Mart store #1362 for the proof)/$39.96 on-line, OR you can get the Complete Edition for only $10 more($29.96 in-store) to be exact-this comes with all games-IV, TLAD, AND TBOGT. So, that comes no where close to $100 like you said. Please do the research before stating the facts next time-I got these facts in less than a minute, thanks to Wal-Mart.com/Wal-Mart store #1362. Just a friendly heads up. I bought GTA IV when it came out and it certainly didn't cost 20 dollars at the time. I'm not talking about how much they cost right now, because it goes without saying that after a couple years, the price would drop. The keyword in my previous post being "initial". By the way, you guys are welcome to discuss the other pros and cons. Edited March 22, 2011 by WhistleBlower
Lord_Ant_Warrior
You forgot the awesome physics engine which is really fun to exploit. And don't you think it's a little bit too late to discuss the "pros and cons" of this game. I mean, it came out 3-4 years ago! No one cares about that crap anymore! Well technically, people DO care about that crap. In past GTAs there was enough life so that people were STILL playing them well after they were released. A lot of people still play San An instead of IV and that game is 7 years old! I completely agree with the poster: the story, scale and visuals are absolutely epic, but scratch beyond that and it just isn't Classic GTA in its level of fun. I have been saying this for AGES about how the shift to realism has KILLED the replay value of this game stone dead. The weapon selection is pathetic considering what was offered in BOGT. The N.O.O.S.E APC should have been included as a bonus for completing the game, not in a DLC pack. I mean it's not even a case of things they left out, it's rather a case of what they did to facilitate the realism- making it so that you have to have 5 Police Chases before the cars spawn "right" and you get a decent one, all because they wanted to make the Police spawning system "realistic"... Well here's a tip Rockstar: Running into the subway for 5 minutes does NOT make a 6-Star level of "wanted-ness" by Law Enforcement disappeir in real life. At times it is laughable how easily you can escape from 3/4 Stars. Basically if you are in a Blista Compact or anything fast and nimble and run down a couple of sidestreets then you will evade the interests of Homeland Security (and the FBI!) in around 30 seconds. Even simple little things like how the police no longer chase NPC cars, it just decreases from the level of "Fun" to be had. I remember on San An I would spend hours waiting for a NPC Police chase to spawn and I would jump in my own Police car and join in and basically feel like I was a Cop... happy days. Don't get me wrong I am having quite a lot of fun replaying this through but only because I now know what to expect. First time round I hate to say it but I was bitterly disappointed. The absolute BEST thing Rockstar could have done was to make the DLC/IV compatible, meaning the new map, extra weapons and features are usable in ALL versions of the game. As it is, I enjoy BOGT the most because of the fun aspect, but I cannot sever ties completely with IV because they TOOK VIGILANTE OUT of the DLC... thanks Rockstar.
