Problem getting online (seems Windows related)

Lo all,

I run XP SP3, and I got a problem with playing GTA IV online. When I log in and start the game, after the start-up music my screen goes and stays black.

When I alt-tab out of it I get this:

user posted image

In English it says: 'An application is asking access to a secured item. Fill in password'

I can't think of any password for this (tried f*cking everything).

I can click cancel, and play single player, no multiplayer.

When I click 'play off-line' at the login, I can play single player, no multiplayer.

I don't get this when I don't have EFLC installed, but then there seem to be no servers in multiplayer.

I tried fresh OS install,

Game reinstall,

Fresh .Net Framework 1.1, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1 install.

Games is updated and patched automatically by Games for Windows Live.

Thanks for any advise you could give me.

I have never seen or heard anything like this. I tried typing in the message in Google and it didn't pull up any results. Is it a possibility that malware can be the cause of this?

When you get this message again, can you go to Task Manager -> Processes and expand the window so you can see the full name of every process and post a screenshot here.

Thanks mkey82, it worked.

I backed up and deleted these folders (this is for XP, for vista and 7 it will be different):

c:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games

and

c:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\XLive

I started the game (the LaunchGTAIV.exe in the game directory)

Logged on to WGFL, it recreated both these folders.

Closed the game and replaced the content of these folders with those from the back up.

It no longer gives me the message and I can play online.

Hurray.
