Here's the gory details of what I see when playing EFLC/GTA4... notify.gif

System Specs:

CPU: Intel Core I5 2500K @ ~4GHZ (Sandy Bridge)

GPU: (1-2X) Sapphire HD 6950 2GB

RAM: 8GB Mushkin Silverline DDR3 (1333)

SSD: Mushkin Callisto Deluxe 240GB

PSU: Corsair 750 Watt (Non-Modular)

MOBO: Asus P8P67 Pro

CASE: Antec 1200 V3 (With USB 3.0)

OS: Windows 7 X64 SP1

Drivers: Latest From AMD/ATI Website (11.2 - Feb 15 2011)

Games:

EFLC Disc Version (Latest patch)

GTA4 Disk Version (Latest patch)

This problem is only when it rains, everything else seems normal. (Except Performance) So yeah, the game play tolerably with a single video card with FPS generally around 55... You're thinking, that's great, now quite whining! BUT this is with all settings on "High" and all the sliders at 25-30. OK, but when I move the sliders up any higher, FPS doesn't drop that much but it'll freeze for a second when moving the camera around...

With the crossfire setup, I have to use the command-line argument to let me use decent settings since it claims that two video cards are less powerful than one! biggrin.gif I would like to max it with crossfire, which is the reason I bought 2 cards... catspider.gif I've disabled page file, etc. tounge2.gif It's not even running at 1080p for goodness sake! rolleyes.gif

The green rain is NOT a hardware issue! (I tested my second card straight out of the box before any OC, etc)

Also when in crossfire with everything maxed, I get "micro-stutter?" or something like that...

So feed me solutions that actually have a chance of working... mercie_blink.gif

Compatibility Mode?

Command-Line Arguments?

Overclocking the RAM? (CPU isn't maxed while playing)

Special setting to force via RadeonPro or ATI Tray Tools?

Try to run it in safe mode.

And that would fix what? sleepy.gif

This has persisted through a clean install of windows 7 and new drivers, etc... alien.gif

Experienced users please! tounge.gif

Edit: Running in safe mode is not an option. New rig, old game, no compromise... cool.gif

The game has bad CF support, don't use it. This green rain happens on single card or with CF?

Various people had various rare graphical glitches and I haven't seen any of those resolved.

Single Card straight out of the box has green rain. True, AMD has given no response whatsoever to my

reports. This same issue is also reported for the 6970 cards on other forums...

So yeah, one OR two cards show the same behavior. I read somewhere how someone got theirs to work tolerably

in crossfire, but can't remember where... (some other forum, with older cards)

So this setup has 4GB GDDR5 Video RAM and the game plays badly. I've tried forcing various things like tripple buffering

without substantial results... sigh.gif

So even with one card, maxing (or even going above 30 in the sliders) makes it almost unplayable. With a card of this strength,

this must mean that there's some kind of a conflict somewhere. (most likely crappy coding in the game itself, though it's not maxing my CPU rampage_ani.gif )

VRAM does not stack up, two 2GB cards will provide 2GB VRAM, not 4.

Strange, but mine does...

Note that in crossfire, i have to use the command-line just to go above the lowest settings possible... notify.gif

No matter, I still have a metric ton of VRAM! catspider.gif

Right now, the -norestrictions one to be able to select decent settings...

Tried others, but no improvements... dontgetit.gif

One commandline and all driver default settings... Getting the green rain fixed in the next drivers

seems unlikely, so anyone who is experiencing this issue should also report it. IF ENOUGH people

complain, it MIGHT get fixed... nervous.gif

For example, would the memrestrict command make sense for a system that has a lot of VRAM and

a lot of ordinary RAM? It never uses THAT much of the available resources!? alien.gif

My Benchmark:

Statistics

Average FPS: 46.62

Duration: 32.95 sec

CPU Usage: 65%

System memory usage: 32%

Video memory usage: 19%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)

Texture Quality: High

Shadow Quality: High

Reflection Resolution: High

Water Quality: High

Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x8

Night Shadows: High

View Distance: 50

Detail Distance: 50

Hardware

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

Service Pack 1

Video Adapter: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series

Video Driver version: 8.17.10.1065

Audio Adapter: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)

Intel® Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz

March 8 2011 Edit: By forcing "AFR Friendly D3D" in RadeonPro, it now runs smoothly... wow.gif However doing that seems to cause some flickering when exiting the safehouse, and rare other times. FPS is bad, but it IS maxed out... However RadeonPro reveals that the cards aren't even working that hard... Less than 50% usage, though FPS occasionally drops down to 20 but remains very playable. If I didn't have the SSD, I'd suspect HDD speeds. So the question changes to this one: What can i do to make it use the cards more, and thus have better FPS. I've tried triple buffering with no noticeable results. The low FPS is ONLY outside while doing extreme stuff. catspider.gif
