Should We Fear China?

Recommended Posts

B Rob

If you go back in time we know about the Roman Empire, Napoleon and the French, Great Britain in the 1800s, Nazi Germany in 1930 through 1945, then Russia and the United States going into the cold war, then then United States had 9/11 happen and the biggest economic depression since the Great Depression. Quietly the United States has somewhat fell off and China has moved up into the top spot most experts say. While the world as a whole was going through a depression here recently China seemed unaffected and now has the worlds greatest economy. They recently told the US Navy to stay away from their coasts or they would use new nuclear weapons. Supposedly these weapons can take out an aircraft carrier with one blow and the missiles have the capability of being launched anywhere in the world. The US has dubbed this missile as the Carrier Killer missile and said that the chinese are lying and that they have no such thing. China currently has the fastest computer in the world and in many experts eyes they have the best technology in the world. Now I ask you in your opinion do you feel China is the next great superpower and are they currently the strongest country in the world? Also do you feel they are a threat to countries like the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union?

Pardon my pedantry, but firstly, America's still the biggest economic power. They just zipped past Japan. Secondly, it won't threaten the Soviet Union at all, seeing as they're defunct. tounge.gif

But, on topic, yeah, China's becoming a big industrial and political power, but it's not going to last very long. India's where it's at, baby.

Personally I don't think China could ever match the power of the Soviet Union and is therefore not worthy of being feared. wink.gif

Short answer- no.

Whilst in economic terms China is rather running away with it (9.4% growth last year) and technically are far wealthier than the Soviet Union ever managed to be, we are taking the wrong attitude towards them. Whilst they're seeking to influence huge swathes of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern America (where untapped resource potential exists), unlike Western powers they have no desire to impress their social or political norms on anyone else- essentially, they are still very isolationist. The problem in the West is that we dont understand China or her aspirations, and are actually making things worse for ourselves by treating China as a threat rather than as a direct competitor. A little discression, and competition without confliction are the best way to deal with China. The lack of parity between their economy and their political and social structures cannot last indefinately.

I'm a tad concerned that China is moving to secure its natural resources in Africa and moving entire towns of their own people there to mine those resources. How long will it be until they begin to move military assets into the area (and you just KNOW the west wont say a word about it) to further secure their survivability, destabilizing a already very unstable region?

So knowing that, I'm surprised Europeans are taking such a lax look at the pink horde that may one day (sooner than you think) be right on their doorstep?

The Chinese have a very strong policy of military isolationism. They'll exploit resources they're given access too but all their rherotic against the US as a hegemonic and neo-empirical state would be contradictory if they themselves were engaged in similar practices.

As long as they like alcohol and tobbaco, no. I'd fear more a nation having global influence that would want to use their influence to take those from us. Like all those poor nations that got bullied into banning their favourite drugs sad.gif.

sivispacem hits the spot! I think China mainly just want to take care itself instead of imposing itself over others like the U.S. does. There are more important threats to worry about than taking over other countries (like defending themselves). China will be (is?) a superpower, but it will not be like the U.S.

I think on the level of international relations fear naturally and necessarily comes into play, and just as the US should fear China, so should China should fear the US.

Agreed with the majority of posters in here. As spaceeinstein (ahoy there by the way, don't think I've seen much of you around since the Myriad days!) said, they're a superpower in a different way. I guess in such a world as we live in now, the days of going around planting your flags in places where they don't belong (such as the way Britain, France and Spain used to do literally, or America in a less direct way) are over and as long as they get a say on the UN security council and keep plugging away at being an economic superpower they'll be happy. In that sense, as an outsider I'd be more worried about the US or even the UK than China. I guess the only real reason people fear them is due to their slightly less than great human rights record.

China doesn't scare me all that much, even though I have two concerns about them. One is them Asian long-horned beetles which are native to eastern Asia, particulary China, Japan and Korea. Even though they are in Asia, they get into wood-packages which are shipped to the United States. Now you are probably thinking, 'what's the big deal it is just another bug?' Well, these beetles are known to pose a severe threat to trees. Every beetle is a threat to trees but, larvae are the biggest problem. They are the perfect size and shape to burry deep into trees and disrupt the trees vascular tissue. Eventually, the trees will die as they cannot live with their vascular tissue damaged. Now, if these beetles somehow get a giant migration, from any circumstance, to the United States, can the possibly destroy enough of our trees to harm people and animals? I know these beetles traveling here to America is not the Chinese's fault, but this makes me paranoid. Also, the Chinese can be safter when exporting products in wooden packages with these bugs. My second beef with China is that their child students are more advanced than our American students. While they are learning piano, we are watching television. I am not saying that China is, but what if they are hellbent on conquering territory and decide that it is a good idea to start creating tactics within the next fifteen, twenty years to take over other countries. The Chinese student's grades have surpassed ours and this could spell trouble for us. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but over the course of the next twenty years.

For all you people who believe I am being racist, I am not (for the record the word racist is abused too much nowadays). I only speak what I believe and how do we know they are not plotting to attack us for the reasons provided?

I didn't finish reading the beetles part, but whats wrong with chinesse people having a better education? You want people in other countrys to be inferior to you? You want them to have less possibilities than you have in your country?

It's not racist, but stupid.

Yes. I'd rather my country to be superior to all the others. It makes me nervous to know that others can be more advanced than say me or my future kids and can be scheming against me.

Do you know, although I admit the guy has paranoia coming out of his ears, I can't really refute his point. Who doesn't want their own people to be the most powerful? I mean, it'd be lovely if we could all just get along, and that would negate the point perfectly, but since that clearly isn't the case, what's wrong with wanting to be top of the pile? It's not about wanting to keep others down, but rather just striving to be the best and most prosperous.

Y'know, just playing devil's advocate, and all.

I kind of believe America is actually superior than most countries in the world. Think about it, strong military, lots of money, growing population, large diversity, FREEDOM (in some cases), etc..

Only biggest con, is probably the sh*tty government.

People from all over the world come here to raise a family, get a job, earn money, and do some other sh*t. Why do you think theres such a big diversity here? It's FREEDOM.

And I never said other countries weren't free. I just put the word 'freedom' in CAPS because America is known for it's freedom. Here in America, when people come here to live a better life, we call that FREEDOM. It's simple.

That means I don't have freedom in my country? So I would only have it in USA?

I think I know what you mean, "the land of opportunity"?, that's not what freedom means. Freedom is commonly known as the quality or state of being free from government oppression.

Im not oppressed here.

"the land of opportunity", we call that freedom here in America.

Government oppression on the other hand, is a whole different story.

But no, freedom isn't only just available in your country. It's available around the whole world. Why would I say that America is the only free country in the world?

What I meant is, we're the land of opportunity. Not the only, but the one that's known the most. Like I said, why is there such a big diversity here?

I understand both of your point, but your argument is a little misguided. If you want to look at countries by freedom, the US is 17th according to the Guardian Democracy Index, once place behind the Czech Republic and 8 behind Canada. The list is topped, in order, by Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden. As for the argument regarding many people wishing to come to the US to work, in relation to population size, it's a much lower number than is most Western European countries. It only appears larger because the US population is considerably larger.
