Yinepi
Anywhere City represents a time when Rockstar/DMA were free and willing to experiment without concerns of whether the game will sell or not. I think with that thought, GTA2 is the definition of what GTA really is, and what it could be again. Instead of going wild with GTAIII they played it safe. They kept the open world concept but made the art style more realistic and the setting modern and familiar and that appealed to the masses and led to the commercial success of GTAIII and the GTA brand, which in turn made Houser and Co. get trapped into the corporate climate and are now stuck to produce whatever sells instead. Americana
I don't understand Grand Theft Auto 2 and Grand Theft Auto 2's settings. What did they even try to do? Quote They kept the open world concept but made the art style more realistic and the setting modern and familiar and that appealed to the masses No way, man. Grand Theft Auto 2 was everything but realistic. Everything about that game screamed 'I'm not realistic'. Grand Theft Auto 1 was realistic, yes, but this one... uh... I don't know about that... He was saying the art style in III was safe and realistic. Yinepi

AlexTSK
A dark, stylized, retro-futuristic environment with crazy electro guns, weird cars and over the top gangs sounds like something Rockstar would never touch with a ten foot pole in this day and age of bland 3rd person games. Then again if Cyberpunk 2077 is a huge success they might consider it, but I doubt it. Yinepi, Dr Busta and DimitriFaustin
Fabrix199
As a matter of fact, the city's name it's never mentioned in-game and only in the website (fair enough). But, Anywhere City is or was Liberty City, check the description of this video: Quote As a huge Prog Rock fan I'd originally planned to create a radio station called "Ridiculous FM" for Grand Theft Auto 2 - broadcasting "Regressive Rock" to the citizens of Liberty City around the clock. Colin Anderson, audio engineer of GTA2 confirms the name (there's a full article about him and this song in the description and also he is credited in the game). There's another reference to the name somewhere, I just can't remember where. So to answer, Anywhere City = Liberty City
VenusianDream
I've got this theory stirring in my head; that GTA 2 takes place after III in a futuristic Liberty City that got renamed to Anywhere City, and we play as an older Claude. But GTA2 is set in 1999, it's even specified in-game. Info in the web doesn't say anything, criminal record in police profiles goes so far until 1998 and death of all characters that can die in game are not included for some reason (like Uno Carb or Johnny Zoo). I think you know this, but it's set in a diff universe so everything it's almost unrelated. VenusianDream

I didn't know that, I thought the year was left ambiguous and up for debate. It seems like it'd be set further into the future due to the ambience and the guns. 2 hours ago, Fabrix199 said: it's set in a diff universe so everything it's almost unrelated. You're right, I didn't really think the theory through lol. But I still think that Anywhere City is just a future version of Liberty City. It's split into 3 boroughs with a residential, industrial, and downtown area and the Zaibatsu and Yakuza are there. I doubt R* would ever recreate this city though, it wouldn't fit the new universe. Fabrix199
Yes, I think at some point it was Liberty City (I even posted about that above)... but some interviews says it's based on a ''futuristic Los Angeles'' too, like this one, wich is really weird... Now you mention about the year, the game is set in a retro futuristic style (it means it depicts future as thought in the past, more or less) so that's why.
