My story is similar to many others, a friend had a burned copy and I immediately went and bought the real deal. What fun. Been a GTA fan ever since. Weird to think the series will be 20 years old in another five short years.

I started with GTA III when it was released in 2001, but the second GTA I played was GTA 1 (also in 2001).

I remember I begged my mom to buy it for me because I thought it'd be cool!

I popped it in, and I was actually let down because of the graphics.

Jesus, if I had a chance, I'd smack my 10 year old self in the face for returning it to Gamestop -_-

I started with GTA 1.

I remember playing GTA 1, 3 and Vice City without my father knowing. It was a great time.

Yeah I've been with GTA since the first game. The year it came out in 1997 when I was 9. We just moved house and my brother lent us the game for a bit. I liked the game, and have played and finished every GTA in the order they have come out ever since and my favourite GTA to this day is still GTA 2

I was about 13 when it came out. I remember it how "edgy" it seemed back then (anyone else remember the controversy?), every though really it's no more violent than a lot of old 2D games but just the whole violent criminal aspect (games were still mostly thought of as a kids thing back then). I remember playing the demo and eventually getting a friend to lend it to me and my dad walking in and saying "What's this about, stealing cars? You shouldn't be playing crap games like this." Although he didn't actually stop me playing I don't think, in fact it was probably just him being a grumpy old git, I really wish I'd been less afraid of my parents reaction to things like this. But this is probably why I didn't end up get round to buying for myself until several years later when I was older (after all it does have an 18 certificate on the box). Of course some kids played it when they were under 10 without their parents batting an eyelid (like some of the people in this thread it seems).

As shown above, im copying this to show what year and order i got what.

2001- GTA 1 and GTA 2.  ( i was 6 and it was when i got my first PS1 )

2002- GTA 3 and Vice city.   ( I was 7, and i got my ps2 new )

God, my parents didn't even like me watching The Simpsons when I was that age. And I had to play a Sega Master System (even though the Mega Drive and SNES were out)

Started with GTA2 in 99 in my electronics class in high school. Few months after VC came out, I pirated that and beat it. Then I pirated III and barely played it (couldn't get into the story). I bought SA a few days after launch and then went back and bought III and the Classics Collection version of GTA, London 1969, and GTA2. Then I finally found a copy of VC to buy, and spent forever looking for GTA Advance. After that, I bought an Xbox 360 just for the IV DLCs and a copy of IV. Then I got the gamecard version of TLaD. Then I got the PC version (like all my other GTAs), and EfLC PC version. Then I went back and bought all the other copies of GTA I didn't have yet (PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox1, Dreamcast, GameBoy, iOS). Now I have the full collection other than EfLC PS3, and GTA3 Android.

I started with GTA1 too. Friend of mine had it on his PC and I remember that I was AMAZED that there was actually a game where you could carjack people and murder the sh*t out of everything. Seriously, for those of you who started from GTAIII or onwards it may not be a big deal, but back then, there were NO games like that. GTA was the very first to be so violent and with such freedom.

So when I went to the toy store with my parents I got GTA1 from them for the PS1. Later I got GTA2 for the PS1 too and played the hell out of it, although back then I couldn't read english very good and I didn't understand most of the missions.

GTAIII I didn't play for a long time. That was the PS2 era and I didn't have a PS2 until wayyyyy later, or a PC good enough to play it. Eventually I played the PC version, and Vice City, and SA.

So yeah I was there from the beginning. And having seen these games evolve to what it is today was truly a marvelous experience.

I remember when I first played by my cousins's house. It was GTA III.He had all the cheats and the game beat so I remember going around in the Tank and just blowing up people and cops in the street.I think that was pretty good for a 4 year old's brain

Since someone bumped this.I started on GTA2.I remember going around crashing against everyone and burping and farting all the time, also I wasn't completing missions at all.I then got hooked to GTA3,and started playing GTA 2 MP around that time, when I found out that there were missions. Then GTA VC,GTA SA,GTA LCS and VCS(all for the PS2,except the GTA 2),and finally I bought IV.I was hooked since VC,but IV kind of let me down in some aspects, and I've got to say,it lost the original GTA feel.

yep. played GTA 1 on PC at my neighbour's house, later got it for PS1. then i got GTA 2 and played that constantly on my playstation. i played GTA III at my friend's house in 2001 (and it was the best game ever, and still is) but couldn't buy it until two years later when i got a PS2, by then vice city was already platinum so i bought that later on. this is around the time i first started visiting these forums. mods interested me even though i didn't have the pc versions and i was anticipating the san andreas release much like we are now with V.

My first was III technically, but my first realistically was VCS.

We used to play it in my Game Center to pass the time between Quake, Unreal and Half-Life.

I started with GTA 3, but this wasn't until vice city was out. I played 3 and fell in love with the concept. I didn't enjoy vice city as much but I liked the motorbikes, when San Andreas came along I couldn't believe how great it was.

I started with GTA IV. Later I downloaded San Andreas for my Xbox 360, GTA III for my IOS, GTA Vice City for my PC (Luckily my brother has an old computer) and Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories for PSP.

Haha, I started with Vice City Stories on my brothers PSP when I was 7! And no, I'm not screwed up! I'm high honor role in school, people like Jack Tompson are plain crazy, to my opinion at least.

I started with GTA 3 in 2004 when my friend brought his PS2 over to my house and we played it. And that was right around the time when GTA SA came out so that was my first "real" GTA that I actually played the story of.

I started with the Playstation demo of GTA1 at my best friend's house. We played it over and over again, and I knew I had to have a Playstation. So I begged and begged my parents, and I eventually got a Playstation with GTA1, and GTA2 was released shortly after.
