Dead Island

While previously known of, the trailer for Dead Island released today has generated massive attention for the game. I personally have already watched it several times.

I know it's only a CG trailer, generally known for being deceiving, but it's so powerful, it would be a genuine shame for the actual game to turn out disappointingly.

Zombies are awesome? Yes... anything we have seen that makes it stand out from the reset and actually impressive gameplaywise? Not really.

I'd give the game a chance for sure, though they'd better come up with some gameplay (or specific details) and show us what's so great about this game to be honest.

I am not quickly excited for new zombie games nowadays.

Yep saw the trailer earlier today, definently powerful stuff. Hopefully in the game the family dying was just a dream sequence because after the first time watching that trailer I was immediately attached to them and genuinely felt sorry for them.

If anyone is wondering, it will be released on all consoles and the Dead Island website will be going up tommorow at www.deadisland.com

So it's an open-world, slow zombie game focused on the story of a man whose family gets zombiefied? All right, I'm interested.

Powerful indeed wow.gif.

Hopefully it doesn't become a massive let down when some proper game footage is released.

It sounds like the zombie game I have been waiting for. I just hope it turns out to be. I want a game where you survive a zombie outbreak, not unrealistically kill millions of them with no true objective.

Zombies, eh? Why has nobody though to put them in a game before?

This looks pretty good, it's certainly piqued my interest a little, but I'll wait for something real to be released before getting my hopes too high.

Holy sh*t, I thought this was cancelled.

Brilliant trailer though. All I hope for is freedom and fun, I'm imagining a sort of first person Dead Rising?

In the wake of Walking Dead, and prior to Walking Dead really, I've been gamer-fantasizing about a truly open-world, as in more than a mall, zombie game with a story with heart at its core. Specifically, a Liam Neeson-esque father living in a rural/suburb community who when a zombie outbreak occurs feels compelled to travel to the big city where his son/daughter/children is/are. Sounds very cool in my mind.

Oh, the trailer? Beautifully brutal, and one of the best trailers I've seen in a long time. I'm actually a little depressed right now. Sadness successfully achieved I'd say.

Hope the game doesn't suck. But I'm not too hopeful for some reason.

Trailer redone by IGN in chronoligical order.

for anyone who is interested, here's an IGN article about the game:

...Rather than run-and-gun their way through a meat maze, players will be forced to scavenge for objects and use them to beat their undead foes into submission. There are precious few firearms scattered around the island (and even less ammo), so the majority of the combat will be intimate. Knives, machetes, bats, broomsticks, pipes – these are your defenses against the horde of infected monsters. It's survival horror with a melee action twist, and it's disgusting....

...Dead Island's developers call it a "first-person zombie-slasher/action-RPG." That's a mouthful, and it's still unclear what the balance will be among those descriptors. Players will be able to choose from a cast of pre-set characters, including a former rapper named Sam B (the only character revealed so far)....

Sounds promising. I like survival games and have been waiting for a genuine, not over-the-top zombie survival horror. Resident Evil got a bit too stupid for me with thing sprouting tentacles etc and Dead Rising is too lighthearted and OTT.

One to watch I think.

Sam B (the only character revealed so far)

Not any more. From something that I've read just now - Xianmei is the second. Reference to the girl in red pants and white shirt with machete, if someone has seen the new screenshots.

apparently, there are four classes of survivors you can control

The four unlucky people you will be controlling are described as a leader, a tank, an assassin, and a jack-of-all-trades. Each of these characters brings something unique to the profession of zombie killing and can be further specialized by leveling up and progressing down one of three skill trees. The leader, for instance, can be specialized to boost his party's performance or maximize his effectiveness with the island's limited gun supply. Techland wants to give you plenty of options for dealing with the deceased by loading up each character with plenty of active skills. These skills can then be used in concert with other player's skills to devastating effect, such as using the tank's ability to knock enemies prone followed by the assassin's ability to quickly slay foes.

Damn, that was one hell of a trailer.

Regarding what the actual game will be like, well, the developer's last game was Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, which got a pretty warm reception from what I've read, so I'm feeling hopeful. Waiting until some actual gameplay footage comes out, though.

I wonder who the main character will be. It sure as hell looks great, reminded me a bit of Heavy Rain on the first look, emotions-wise.

Hopefully the game play is as fun as the trailer is. icon14.gif

And i don't really agree that those zombies are slow.

edit: Didn't notice Tank's post. I thought GTANET folks would only to R* games related sites. wow.gif

I remember this back when the PS3 and Xbox360 were announced. Not much information was released but I was excited nonetheless. However, news stopped coming for a couple years so I just assumed the game was dead...

I'm excited it's back though, and it looks better than ever. Hopefully the actual gameplay is fun and if it has co-op multiplayer then that'd be great as well.

EDIT: From the (slow loading) website:

Features

- first-person melee combat

- 4 player co-op

- weapon customization

- set on an open world tropical island

- RPG elements for character development

- hordes of gruesome zombies

for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC - Release Date: 2011

Hmm. I'm certainly interested. Pulling a lot of LOST emotional tricks with that trailer. I really can't say the gameplay sounds all that great to me, however. Maybe I'm just not a hacknslash guy any more. I tell you though, if I were in a zombie apocalypse, I'd be wearing a lot of f*cking body armor.

So what I've gathered from everything I've read, is that it's Dead Rising meets Left 4 Dead with a realistic RPG approach.

This game is going to have to be seriously bad to keep me from buying it on day one.

That trailer got to me like no other game trailer has yet to do. If the rest of the game can bring a sort of emotional pull like that, then this is a midnight release sort of game for me. But, I can't help but feel like it might be a rent for five days game, since these sorts of games don't really keep replayability.

Those details make it sound like the developers want to outdo Left 4 Dead. First person melee combat, weapon customisation, RPG elements...

I'll give it a chance... though I'm not that excited (yet).

Sounds similar to Borderlands but more realistic and with Zombies....

this game is planted on my radar for the time being.

By all consoles, you mean two.

I have one word about the trailer: ASS! I'm so sick and f*cking tired of this trend of making sh*tty CGI trailers, it's like the developers can't wait to show their games and they have to hype people up with fake sh*t. f*ck you, show me real footage. You can't trust trailers anymore.

I've played the Left 4 Dead demo and I though it was atrocious but then again I'm not really in to killing Zombies. I'd rather kill normal humans as then I can feel either bad I'm killing them (depending on the context) or something like that, zombies are living dead so you're just hacking away at organic matter imo. alien.gif

This trailer gives some sort of emotion and I actually felt bad for the girl so maybe this will be the zombie game for me, I dunno.

What I don't like about the trailer is that It manipulates with your emotions via the little girls death, making you sorta want to like and eventually buy the game, without actually revealing a thing.

The lack of firepower sounds kinda fun though, I wonder if It'll be a little puzzle based, having all those melee and all... The first person shooter RPG action thing with zombies sounds fun, even though I despise roleplaying, but this may change my mind.

I hope you don't become to dependant on other players about increasing and using your skills. Singleplayer is one thing, but online everyone usually minds their own bussiness or are just assholes, which makes teamwork rather hard.
