IV by far. It literally feels looks like trash in the most homely way possible.

I can't tell if it's praising or criticism.

The city itself is so trashy and grim it's charming. Not saying it's shabbily designed, no I'm saying it's perfectly designed to look like a s*** hole.

Bump.

  1. IV & The Lost and Damned
  2. Vice City & San Andreas (PS2)
  3. Vice City Stories (PS2)
  4. Liberty City Stories (PS2)
  5. III (PS2)
  6. The Ballad of Gay Tony
  7. V

I guess I have a revision:

  1. GTA IV (all three episodes don't feel too much different from each others when it comes to the city's overall atmosphere)
  2. GTA Vice City & Liberty City Stories
  3. GTA III
  4. GTA San Andreas
  5. GTA Vice City Stories
  6. GTA V

Gta 3 the town felt really dark and gritty plus the fog and it genuinely felt like a cutthroat city where you had to keep a gun on you to feel safe

III, easily. IV's atmosphere was fine but there was a real sense of danger and grit to III's atmosphere comparatively

IV had a gritty atmosphere which i really dig, but at the end of the day i prefer the sunny and 80 feel of Vice City.

It appeals to me a bit more by a small margin.

I prefer gritty but honestly I don't think any gta has been entirely sh*t so I'll buy it regardless.

I like San Andreas on PS2, Sunrises, sunsets, desert nights --- they are something else, man.

I feel the same way about GTAV on PC, just f*cking marvelous nights in the desert, how it gradually becomes morning and gradually goes dark. Story sucled. but visually on PC it is a marvelous game.

Mr Zedd

I will go with gta san andreas since there's only one game allowed to pick.

Kudos to r* for its attempt to offer three cities with additional areas like countryside, and desert. San fierro city is particularly my favourite area for a relaxed outing, including the bayside. The state of san andreas is dripping in atmosphere at every corner with so much diversity to spend the time any way the player desires to enjoy a great drive, or walking across the locations taking into the sights, pedestrian exchanges, and various landmarks especially flying over the air using a jetpack. I also love the weather patterns in different areas.

What many of us call 'cartoonish' - sometimes in a totally wrong context or even worse, to demean the artistic value of 3DU games - is exactly the starting point for the appropriate atmosphere that suits my eye. And soul. The proper term would be 'stylezed' though. So the stylized worlds of 3DU games is what perfectly fits my artistic taste and not only that, but further on proves the fact that ultra realistic and high end graphics doesn't necessarily have to be ' better looking ' than simple stylized form. These games aren't in the far right extreme when it comes to being stylized, but rather the creators used some form of it or stylized them up to a certain degree.

For the games that are heavily marked by their setting and general characteristics of the times they were set in, form of stylization came as a perfect thing to do and not only that, but in broadest terms speaking, it is always easier to exaggerate and put stronger emphasis on things represented in comparison to more naturalistic presentation - in this case high end graphics.

There are no games next to GTA III, VC and SA - not counting Max Payne 1, or maybe Half-Life - that have left such a strong impact on me when it comes to atmospheric value they provide and it is mainly due to their prominent stylization form. Never have I felt so alone and melancholic watching distant tall buildings slowly diminishing inside the draw distance fog while being underneath a street lamp. Water tower above has never looked so intriguing. I can almost sense the steam coming out of that vent. Watching the reddishly transparent sunsetting in the most colorful virtual city there has ever been, brings a certain warmth. Or orange skies slowly turning purple. Moon has never been closer, nor larger. Observing city's outline underneath the purple skies from a distance have never been so inviting...

I'm not sure whether Rockstar intentionally went for more stylized looks, or was that simply a byproduct of inability to incorporate realistic graphics right from the start due to tech and hardware limitations, but comic book stylization is the visual starting point out of which the entire new universe could be spawned. Games of HDU have really prominent and strong atmosheres, especially IV and EFLC, equally strong and impactful, perfectly fitting, with beautiful visuals, yet there's still something missing for me...

As someone who thinks Rockstar has started being full of $hit and someone who can see through their bs - gameplay wise - or ultimately as someone who is simply maybe a bit too old for video games now, I can say they still got it when it comes to visual part of games, everything from IV to RDR2 is beautiful and atmospheric. I just highly appreciate the additional artistic sphere of the older titles, with highly articulated looks or simply put, I'm more aware of the fact that 'beautiful graphics' is much more important that the ultra 'high end' and realistic one, despite the thin line between the two and that's why I subjectively appreciate the older titles more in that sense.

Definitely Vice City - I'm a child of the 80's, the setting, music, cars - all hit the spot!
