GTA III for its gloomy, it's almost a bit modern noir-ish atmosphere. I hope a future GTA will try to do something similar again. smile.gif That being said, every GTA gives me a very good, unique feeling.

GTA III. GTA IV is too brown for my taste. If this were a topic for best City, I'd say Liberty City in IV in a heartbeat but it's not. GTA III is perfectly gritty and dark. No game sense has captured that.

This is a very touch choice for me to make, so I haven't decided yet. However, I'm going to say that Rockstar does a great job with the atmosphere in each game. For instance, although The Ballad of Gay Tony, The Los and Damned, and the original IV were set in New York during pretty much the same timeframe, the feel is completely different for each game. Each borough in Liberty City is very distinctive.

I love how San Andreas has three different settings that give completely different vibes. I haven't played Vice City, but it does seem like the vibe from that is great as well. Honestly, I can't even decide. They're all great.

GTA IV.

It's unexplainable, i just love cruising or even walking around the city, admiring the view, to this day, i'd say IV's Liberty City is still one of the most detailed open world enviroments, Vice City is a close second

Wow, incredibly tough choice between Vice City and GTA IV.

Vice City just pips it. I've just finished playing the game (and wrote a review of it which you can find in my signature, if you so desire), and the one thing I took away from the game was that 80's feel. Breathtaking.

Vice City.

San Andreas is a bit too gloomy for my style, even seeing it's a GTA game, it just feels.. too serious. The other games are much more humorous and acceptable IMO.

My picks are LCS and III, I voted for LCS, but they are both equally great in atmosphere, but for different reasons.

III fits the dark, gloomy, "worst place in America" vibe it aims for, everything is so gray and dusty.

LCS is different, it's more shiny and chrome, which actually kind of fits the 1998 setting, the era of the "Go-Go 90's" when everything was shiny, flashy, and new. The Cold War was over and 9/11 had yet to arrive, the economy was in great shape so things were brighter and happier in the US back in 1998.

LCS, while not as drenched in 90's pop culture like VC is drenched in 80's pop culture, perfectly captures that late 90's, turn-of-the-millennium atmosphere. With the noted exception of the soundtrack, which focused more on foreign music like Brit Pop, Italo Disco, Classical Opera, and whatever the hell Radio Del Mundo was playing, everything else in LCS actually feels like the last days of the 1990's, the era leading up to the New Millennium, the clothes are less glaringly dated than the 80's fashions of VC and VCS, but still kind of capture the local casual fashions worn at the Turn of the Millennium.

Liberty City in LCS is nowhere near as gloomy and dark as the city presented in GTA III, but I honestly think that is intentional. It's before the economic crashes, terrorist attacks, and general turmoil of the 2000's.

People complained about Liberty City Stories not emulating the late 90's in the way that Vice City emulated the 80's or San Andreas emulated the early 90's. I think LCS perfectly captured the late 90's, but in a much more subtle way. The atmosphere was less blatantly obvious, and more subtle.

Vice City and San Andreas were both awesome games, but they strived for their setting by saturating you in the pop culture of the 80s and early 90's. LCS took a more pedestrian approach in its presentation of 1998.

Vice City felt more like you were in a movie from 1986, while Liberty City Stories felt more like you were living everyday life in 1998.

The radio (or at least Chatterbox and the commericals) feel more like 1998-1999, in the sense that the topics discussed by Lazlow and the other guests felt like it was from the late 90's. The Internet was starting to become a facet of everyday life, but still had a sense of novelty and an aura of mystery to it. People were talking about the New Millennium and Y2K fast approaching. Segments like Breathing Life and that Wiccan who calls Lazlow on Chatterbox remind me of when New Age stuff was becoming trendy in the late 90's, at least where I lived at.

The only real issue was the music stations. Had R* optioned for more direct music from the late 1990's, (only Rise FM had any acutal 90's tracks, mostly from the club scene), it would have perfectly encapsulated the setting of the game, without saturating it with pop culture like Vice City's rendition of the 80's.

I noticed some people picked SA. While SA is a great game and is full to the brim with content, it's atmosphere is just a bit dull IMO.

All of the major towns and locals are stretched way far apart with miles of pretty much nothing except a couple of off-terrain PoI, and even the towns themselves have this apparent emptiness to them that's hard to not notice. Also the whole central theme with the game is "Street life." which is pretty dark. This darkness warrants dull textures and loads of brown and grit; something that's not very enthralling and atmospheric.

Vice City on the other hand is. Bright colors, beautiful scenery, tight-knit areas, and just overall subtle game feel make it the quintessential GTA in the atmosphere department.

For me it's gotta be VCS. The original VC provides a more realistic depiction for what 80s Miami looked like, but the neon hues of VCS create a dream-like atmosphere. Try driving anywhere - anywhere - at night while Space Age Love Song plays. It's downright surreal. Hard to describe, but transcendent and bizarrely affecting. I love it.

So now for my ranks:

1. VCS

2. San Andreas (another surreal romanticized one, but doesn't have the same emotional resonance)

3. V

4. IV

5. Vice City

6. III

1. IV

2. TLaD

3. VC

4. SA

5. LCS

6. III

7. VCS

8. TBoGT

9. V

But I should say that the bottom six is more or less interchangeable, depending on my current mood. I enjoy VCS' fever dream as much as elusive heat of SA or foggy, grim nights of III.

Time to rank:

1) San Andre: Each island on the map felt so different from one another. The contrast between every urban city, the refreshing vibes from the countryside to the desert. To me, hands down it has the best atmosphere.

2) TLAD: It created a very, very strong biker culture which resonated throughout the whole story and the map itself.

3) VCS/VC: By day you relax at the beach, by night the lights come out and it looks like time to party. The city of Vice City itself brightly flourished itself of those beautiful natural elements yet it contrasted so well with that dark criminal underworld of drug trafficking and the battle for criminal empire leadership. That stark contrast itself creates that strong atmosphere.

4) IV/TBOGT: For IV, it showed that grim underworld of Liberty City. The take of an immigrant freshly off the boat looking for a new life yet he delves into the criminal world where he becomes some sort of most wanted for hire Terminator. From different cultures, of Irish to Italian Mafia, each exposed a criminal lifestyle that was dark and really showcased Niko's personality. For TBOGT, it showed the brighter side of LC. A culture that is driven by sex, fame, parties, drugs and people gettin' f*cked up (probably the most relatable culture in the GTA series to be honest). That lifestyle had spread across the whole story and parts of the map. The atmosphere here is best at night and it really does show strongly.

5) V: Technically has the best natural atmosphere eg the ocean, the mountains. Yet the overall game's atmosphere doesn't feel that great, due to one thing (IMO) over-used satire. If the npc's were more serious and so to were the conversations, this game would of brought a great atmosphere. Over-used satire from the ghetto, to the streets of LS, the wealthy areas, the counrty deserty people folk. The only atmosphere that I found great was Paleto Bay, it felt so, so down to earth. Although small, there's something about that isolated place that feels real. I liked it. If the other places weren't so satirical and the conversations were more serious it would of made the atmosphere feel alive. But to soley base off the natural atmosphere, the game did very well. I found the oceans to be alive but not so much for the land animals and woods and such. Though I don't own a next/current gen console so that's probably why. I also admit that flying a crop duster or an old rusty kinda plane and flying it and looking over the landscape of the farm areas and that place with that water and river between those hills. That was nice.

6) LCS: It had a very nice Mafia vibe throughout the game.

7) III: Grim, almost too......grim. Or maybe that's what makes its atmosphere really really strong, it was so dark. Very underbelly like. Maybe I should put this as number 2. For now I can't be bothered. Rankings may change later.
