Just as it was three years ago, Take-Two is again rumored to be the target of an acquisition by a major publisher. Following a noteworthy week in which it canceled the 2011 edition of Guitar Hero and seemingly shelved the franchise for the time being, Activision Blizzard is rumored to be interested in acquiring Take-Two.

"There are very strong rumors amongst people at a very senior level within the global business," a senior executive told MCV. "But there're not much more than that at the moment -- they are just rumors. And, of course, given Activision's news this week, everyone is now looking to see what their next move is. But you can definitely put two and two together and make four-ish."

Electronic Arts attempted a hostile takeover of Take-Two prior to the release of Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008. The move was given the go-ahead by the Federal Trade Commission but ultimately talks fell apart by September 2008.

Activision made a major move when it merged with Vivendi Games in mid-2008, so a move like acquiring Take-Two wouldn't be completely unheard of for the company.

Take-Two is best known for Grand Theft Auto and being the owner of 2K Games, but it is also responsible for developing and publishing quite a few other series -- Red Dead, BioShock, NBA 2K, and Midnight Club among them. MCV points out Activision's sudden cancellation of True Crime: Hong Kong this week could be taken as a move made to benefit Grand Theft Auto, but that's pure speculation.

Assuming this rumor is true, it doesn't mean that GTA fans need to worry that the series will be turned into GTA of Warcraft Duty Hero and run into the ground as many would argue Guitar Hero was. (Keep in mind that three GTA games were released between October 2001 and October 2004.) As we pointed out in a story earlier this week about the possibility of the next GTA being released in 2011, several key Rockstar employees -- Dan and Sam Houser, as well as The Benz -- have contracts expiring at the end of January 2012.

Were Activision to acquire Take-Two, it seems safe to assume that it would be willing to assure the Rockstar heads that they won't be forced to push out a GTA game on an annual basis. Activision showed with its Bungie publishing deal that it's willing to concede certain points in order to secure a major deal.

Of course, this is jumping to a lot of conclusions. As MCV's source said, these are just rumors at this point. Even if the interest is there on Activision's part, things might not even get as far as they did when EA was in the same position in 2008.

doubt it'll happen tbh

Interesting point that canceling true crime could be them trying to suck up to TT, but i from what i heard TCs cancellation is down to the fact they dont think they'll get enough money from it.

Interesting point indeed, shame to hear it was canceled though I was actually looking foreword to it, it had potential.

Anyhow I doubt it will happen, and if it dose, the I hope they don't screw it up.

Not only for gta's sake but for other R* and 2K franchises as well.

Already a topic here, I don't see how this would affect the gta, take two is just the publisher.

Also theres a possibility that if such a take over happens, R* may be "released" unto themselves, or whoever's buying TT may have to sign a legal contract to keep control of GTA etc to R*

I have faith that Take two aren't greedy money grabbing snakes..... hope im right

Rockstar is lucky to have a parent company that gives them the freedom to do work that not only tops the sales charts but gets the most critical acclaim.

Creativity doesn't happen on an annual schedule and Take-Two has historically had trouble making a profit in years when there is not an all-new GTA. They have addressed this by investing in major games besides GTA that build upon Rockstar's investment in open-world gaming but are not GTA, so the GTA franchise can proceed at a pace that doesn't kill it, and hopefully there doesn't have to be a GTA every year to make money every year. They're trying to get more golden eggs by getting more golden geese. If L.A. Noire can approach the success of Red Dead Redemption, the growth strategy will be looking pretty good.

Shareholders should be patient and resist a buy-out by any entity that doesn't share the vision.

Activision is much richer than EA.

No they are not, i am fairly certain they are on a very similar level, if not then EA is more profitable, and activision has supposedly hit the rocks and are a little unstable at the moment.

Also when EA went to buy T2, they were a much less profitable company themselves, it was jsut before IV was released, IV was very successful, add RDR on top of that and think about how much higher their worth is now than prior 2008.

THis is from VG Chartz, this is weekly sales by publishers...who has double the sales of activision this week?
