Rumor: activision wants to buy take two

Recommended Posts

Activision is reportedly eyeing an acquisition of Grand Theft Auto owner Take-Two.

"There are very strong rumours amongst people at a very senior level within the global business," a senior games executive told MCV.

"But there're not much more than that at the moment - they are just rumours. And, of course, given Activision's news this week, everyone is now looking to see what their next move is. But you can definitely put two and two together and make four-ish."

If true, such a move would potentially unite brands like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and BioShock.

In 2008, Activision's chief rival EA unsuccessfully attempted to acquire Take-Two in a deal that would have been worth about $2 billion.

Earlier this week, Activision announced its intention to axe the Guitar Hero business unit in order to focus on more profitable areas of its operations

Whatever, what will change if Take-Two gets bought?

Every game Take-Two publishes will become a pile of rubbish.

How do you know this.

haha because they are a purely money driven company. They care more about making games every 6 months to keep a steady income rather than making video games actual art.

It's like, say some musicians work real hard to get heard, they write real deep strong music and put tons of effort into making it big, then all of a sudden Justin Beiber walks in and makes millions off saying 'baby baby baby' over and over. Activision and EA are the companies that put others to shame because they're the some of the biggest names out there and are filthy rich by putting out complete sh*te games.

Have you been living in a cave for the last year? Activision (especially Bobby kotickt) just wants money and will make half assed games. GTA would be half assed, with a sh*tty storyline.

Not sure if you've noticed but Activision is pretty much like EA, they just care about the money. They release a half-assed games of every series they own every year. Would you like to see GTA 2012? And the next year GTA 2013?

*Applause* That was one of the best examples I then read in a long ass time

If they buy take-two and if they want money and know whats good for them, they will leave Take-two to do their thing.

Case in point? Blizzard.

Activision have sufficient vision and market analysis to see that if they do buy Take-two, they need to let them do their thing in order to bank a maximum of money.

Theres no need to take Cod and apply it to everything Activision does.

As a result of this, I honestly couldnt give 2 diarhea sh*ts about Activision buying Take-two.

I don't think there would be any concern about the Housers and GTA as well as their other popular IPs. With R* acting as the publisher for LA Noire they[Housers] are proving themselves in the publishing game.

Unless there are some really tight contracts the Housers would probably just break off and live within the publishing and development of R*. Personality wise they could never give up any control on their empire.

They didn't give in to EA; they won't give in to Activision. I would be very surprised if they did.

Exactly, please don't take anything from these rumors, Isn't Activision in a supposedly "bad" financial state at the moment? They are using that excuse to lay off workers right? Well, then it is unlikely they will be able to afford a company such as T2, and it is a much different story now to what is was when EA was going to buy them out, T2 is a much more valuable company now since they released IV and Red dead.

Anything published by Rockstar is published by Take Two as it is now. R* is a subsidiary of T2 so they aren't doing anything themselves, unfortunately. In an ideal world R*/the Housers would be entirely self- sufficient, but as that isn't the case, and as T2 own the rights to the Grand Theft Auto IP (amongst others), those above the Housers need to be good people and T2 are almost certainly better people than Activision.

Take-Two are brilliant, when things are working for them they let the studios do as they wish, case in point, they bloody let 3D Realms waste 11 years on Duke Nukem Forvere before finally doing something!

As for others asking what's the problem, Activision is a very extreme money centered company, with Kotick in charge, he buys out studios (Bizzare, Red Octane, etc) and bleeds them for all they are worth, rushing out games, sequels, over priced DLC and under cutting the developers, then, once the franchise these studios work on starts to dip SLIGHTLY, he cans the projects and then CLOSES the Studios! The amount of brilliant developers who have been forced to look for work elsewhere in the past two years because of this man is disgusting. He admits he doesn't care about creativity and that it's all a business game for him to make as much money as possible with the biggest brands whilst pretty much screwing over the average gamer for as much money as possible!

Activision is the CANCER of gaming, I don't give a crap about what EA did in the past, they were never this bad! At least EA are decent now, their Studio care and allowing developers to be linked to them rather than bought out, etc, allows more freedom on the Developers side. IF Take-Two were swallowed up by Activision, that would include Rockstar Games and 2K Games, the first thing on the list would be to shut down any excess studios and then rush through any current projects, it's happened in the past, and will happen again, now that they've killed off Guitar Hero and True Crime, they've dusted their hands after milking them dry and are now moving on to the next franchise they can get their hands on!

Ash, broadly I agree, but EA are as bad as anybody when it comes to making a quick buck. It's probably best if I don't get into too much detail here but they could certainly go blow for blow with Activision.

Case in point: BioWare. What a f*cking shambles that place is becoming.

Jesus Christ, get the f*ck away activision. You f*cking assholes. I hate them so much for what they did with IW. Please take two don't give in. I don't want to see this GTA: black ops by Rockstar, take two and treyarch

Activision = my ma's cock.

Fact!

I think Take Two is too big to be just bought off by Activision or EA. They aren't some developer like Bioware or Treyarch.

It ain't gonna happen, don't worry, though if the whole rumors thing lasts a bit longer, GTAF might have material for another April Fools joke! tounge.gif

Rockstar's contract with T2 expires on Jan 31st 2012, so LA Noire could be T2's last game with Rockstar before they become publishers in their own right.

This could explain why Team Bondi hasn't become R* Bondi (or Sydney) - they might want to keep future studios as subsidiaries for legal reasons.

A hostile takeover by Activision could end with them still not owning R*, so I think this story will remain a rumour.

Anyone remember the EA bought GTAForums? sigh.gif
