Hey everyone,

I'm uploading last part of the video reviews of sayooj's "John Franklyn chapter 1" series.

I'm also uploading the first of the 2 parts of the video reviews of Moryachok's "Gamekeeper" series.

Once the gamekeeper series videos are done, I'm going to start doing the videos of LeonCJ's "Matthew Hegan Pact Act 2" series missions.

My own two cents.

In the LP community (These are LPs where you also give your opinion on the missions, not actual review now) it's been decided that reading the text during cut scenes or at mostly any point in the game, be it subtitles or anything else, is generally a bad idea, because, to quote EVERY SINGLE PERSON who's complained about this, "We CAN read."

I personally find it annoying having someone talk over that, as I'm trying to read, but some people like that, so I could just mute the video for that portion, I guess.

However, what is really annoying and makes the review unwatchable is when someone describes what happens.

"Now two people walked in. One of them is walking up towards us. He has a gun and is walking towards the main character" Like seriously dude, not only can we SEE what's happening, but you're not even being funny or entertaining, it's just describing what's happening and it's IMPOSSIBLE to really get into the mission, at least for me. I don't see anybody enjoying or requiring you to narrate exactly what's going on ON SCREEN as long as you don't add anything to it. At least crack a joke about it. If you don't have anthing to say during the cutscenes, that's fine, that's how I'd like it, just shut up and let me take in the cutscene.

Apart from that, however, I think it's great that people take their time to review others' missions, giving them feedback and drawing more people to play them perhaps. I just wish you guys stopped narrating everything like I'm blind, and maybe stop reading during cutscenes, but that's actually ok, just that I, along with the LP community, don't like it.

Also, can anybody review a mission and post it here, or do you have to be part of "the club" to start doing it?

Reading the text make the video less boring, if you don't like it, there's a mute button. It's like watching a movie with subtitle but no sound. Yes you can read, but that don't stop us from reading the text. And how can you know that everyone hate and even complain about this, can you find posts that complain about this like you did?

But I do agree with the "discribing what's happening", it really makes no scene.

This is a subjective point of view that doesn't apply to anyone. There's people who praises the text talking during the cutscenes for bringing a little bit more life into the missions themselves because of the lack of dedicated voices. Then again, if you don't like it, you can turn the volume to mute. And no one is actually judging you to be illiterate.

Then again, this is also subjective depending how well you can understand a joke. Personally, I'm not actually trying to be funny. I'm more of a technical LPer who gives tips how to beat the missions. That's my style of my other games LPs and I doubt I'm going to change it.

Yea I respect your opinion, but doing Let's plays for this is a bit different than doing it for other games. If everything you said was applied to other games, then I would say for the most part, yes you would be giving a good advice for people who are starting out.

You seem to have a problem with people speaking during the cutscenes, what else do you want us to talk about? I personally try and voice act the characters and create humor with the voices. If the voices were already in the cutscene, then I definitely would not need to do it..

One of the things I dislike *sometimes* is when people who are playing the game start rambling about their life or some story with little to no humor at all.. Obviously some of them are not live, but I try to avoid those. Would I be an asshole to say "I don't really care about it". But that is my opinion.

Don't take it the wrong way, I am aware of the different reasons why people do it. But I normally would save it for Vlogs and I understand some people do want to share some life situations and so would I, but I guess it depends on the subject that is being discussed and how active their voice is.

I agree about about describing things. Personally I try my best to avoid describing too many of the detail. But everyone has their own style.

"Along with the LP Community?" Who else is watching the videos that are in the LP community? Also you cannot really speak for the entire community since it is probably so huge. Everyone I spoke to does not have a problem with it.. and really I will be honest, not a whole lot of people from the LP Community are probably watching them. Probably not a lot of people in general are going to take notice. Sure GTA San Andreas is popular..but the DYOM community is pretty closed off or not spoken much in public. I could be wrong, but that hows I look at it.

Anyone can commentate missions and post it here. There really is not a "club" here and I honestly am not too active around this thread. So feel free to post some videos smile.gif

Using the word "review" is actually a word I would change.. it really is not a review. That was my mistake with creating the thread.

But thanks for the post , I am always looking for new ways to keep it entertaining.

If yo don't describe things and only try to voice act the characters and make it funny (which I really, raelly don't have a problem with, if I were to make "reviews" I might do that if most people really wanted voice overs during cutscenes) then you're not the kind of person I was talking about.

Also, the "LP community" isn't necessarily a tightly knit one, I'm talking about the different packs of people who watch LPs from different LPers often. The guys who watch LPs on youtube and the goons over at Something Awful are part of the LP community. And, what I meant by that comment is that the people who watch LPs constantly, and have watched them for a long time, and thus know what's cool to do and what usually becomes annoying (for most people) say that X thing is annoying. Not that they have their own sensibilities, and won't like watching this, no, just that they know better what works and doesn't.

You don't HAVE to talk about something during the cutscene, since, as you might have figured out, judging by your post, and other let's players (not of DYOM missions, just in general) haven't, is that the review is not about you, and should have nothing to really do with you unless it makes for a more entertaining review/let's play. Thus, you don't need to talk during the cutscene because that's where I take in the story, and having some dude saying "TAHTS A CAR. IT'S A BLACK CAR. THE CAR NEXT TO THAT ISN'T BLACK, IT'S BROWN. NOW SOMEONE'S WALKING OUT OF THE CAR; THE BLACK ONE, NOT THE BROWN ONE" just ruins it.

I really care about the story in DYOM missions, let me take it in on my own and get immersed into it damn it. Don't talk over this finely made scene made out of 4 cutscenes, let me enjoy it. That's what many reviewers should take into consideration.

Also I don't understand where that irl tangent came from ^^

if you were offering alternatives to describing the cutscenes, then there's no need, I have arguably the best one, silence.

...unless the mission's story/cutscenes are garbage, in which case you CAN talk over them as long as you make it funny, and not just describe things. Be sarcastic.

And there's really not much difference between DYOM LPs and other LPs. If people find having someone read the subtitles be a little bit easier, then that's fine, when it's small lines of dialogue then it can be helpful, so I'm not hating ON THAT necessarily. Unless the person avoids make unfunny accents to try to spice it up.

The main problem with having ppl read on-screen text is what you might have had happen during class, when sbdy was reading from a book, and you obviouly read a bit faster in your head, so you get a paragraph ahead, and as you try to actually read that you have an annoying voice not letting you. With small phrases, it's ok though.

Main point. I suggest not talking during cutscenes, it affects the viewer's immersion in the story. Reading the lines of dialogue seems fine, I guess, just try not to be obnoxious about it.

Otehrwise, keep on rocking.

Why so aggressive, I thought I made it clear at the end of the post that I have nothing personal against you guys. Take some criticism why dont'cha rolleyes.gif

The subjective point of view argument (Which I've always felt should be considered a fallacy for the most part) doesn't mean that what you're doing is ok, dude.

The fact that slapping a woman and beating her up mercilessly during sex is bad is a subjective thing. SOME men and women like that. Quite a lot of them do, actually, especially the men. That doesn't mean that it's ok to beat it every woman you have sex with. And that is how your argument doesn't really hold any water (and I don't mean sherm, Ryder).

I did say I could mute the video (Don't know if you were paying attention to that part since you didn't quote it, but it's in there) but that should only happen if a vast majority of people liked you talking over the cutscenes, explaining how a person is walking up some stairs and talking to your main character, which I don't know if that's the case. Still, if many people prefer THAT, then I'm ok with muting, it's all good, just know that more people who watch/make LPs very often consider that as being bad. And no, you can't say "herpa derp subjective" on the first thing you quoted me on because all I said was that MOST PEOPLE who watch LPs often dislike it.

There aren't a lot of people making reviews for DYOM, so there's no real competition, which means that if a person's reviews are watchable, people who want to watch dyom reviews will watch them. Still, you might want to consider things that would make them more enjoyable to watch, and attract more people (because a long while ago when I first saw this topic and checked the most recently posted review I just clicked off in a few seconds because the person was describing how two people were walking into a house and up to a person or something ^^)

What is your argument against my joke suggestion? Don't make jokes, because some people might not get them? lol? I'm sure that's not what you meant but that's how it comes off. I said, if you have NOTHING to say and really HAVE to say something, then make a joke. If you're not clever enough, then just shut up and let me enjoy my cutscene.

And I never talked about your style so that's all cool and all.

Still, keep doing what you do, but might want to step outside that box for a second and see if there's any possibility to improve. GL.

Dude, don't tell people to agree with you, Aznkei clearly said that is his style and he don't want to change it. Why saying reading during cutscene effect people while it only effect you!? And dude, make use of the mute button, no matter what you say, the reviewer won't shut up just to let you enjoy the cutscene.

@Fordred

I know your post was not directed to me, but I still will reply tounge.gif

Everything we discussed, is what makes doing Let's Plays or videos in general very difficult. The person playing the game often does things his way, while the audience often wants something different. I mean, of course if the user does want to get some sort of recognition, then they might have to meet the audiences demands. So it is not an easy answer biggrin.gif.

You sort of described my problem a little bit. I feel like I MUST say something in the video but without having anything important to say, and it is not only in cutscenes. Especially since playing it live and everything is a first time experience, or for the most part. None of it is premeditated. I try to figure out some sort of thing to talk about that is related to the game Im playing or create some connection.

So yea, part of the reason above is why I have considered some videos being recorded as a voice over..Which gives me little more room to talk and crack jokes, but yea there are problems with those as well.

One of my favorite commentators is Penguinz0 (Cr1TiKaL), and I really don't know how much of his stuff is live..He is just so funny regardless.
